It’s still almost a year away, but Freeform has already unleashed a trailer for its 2018 series ‘Cloak & Dagger’ based on the Marvel Comics characters.

cloak-and-dagger-featuredThe show stars Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt as the title characters.  In the comics, the pair are the victims of an experiment with synthetic heroin that resulted in them gaining super powers.  They became vigilantes and crossed paths with many other Marvel street-level characters like Spider-Man and The Punisher.

In this trailer, they don’t appear to have embarked on a crime-fighting career yet.  But this establishes that the characters have a history considerably lengthier than in the comics, showing that they encountered one another as children then reconnected as teens.  We just barely get a glimpse of Tandy’s (Dagger’s) light powers.  And we get a tiny glance at Tyrone/Cloak wearing his… well, cloak, which is worked into the show’s logo.

Overall,  the trailer may not draw in the die-hard action comics fans.  It definitely feels like a Freeform show (although it could easily work on The CW), heavy on the romantic angle and just barely touching on the super aspects.  But presumably, this clip is just culled together from the pilot.  It remains to be seen how the show will evolve from here.

Check out the trailer for yourself below:

Gina Prince-Bythewood (‘Love & Basketball’, ‘The Secret Life of Bees’) directed the pilot.  ‘Daredevil’ and ‘Heroes’ co-executive producer Joe Pokaski acts as showrunner for this series.  Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory serve as executive producers.

In addition to Joseph and Holt, the cast consists of Andrea Roth as Melissa Bowen (Tandy’s mother), Gloria Reuben as Adina Johnson (Tyrone’s mother), Miles Mussenden as Michael Johnson (Tyrone’s father), Carl Lundstedt as Liam (Tandy’s initial rough-around-the-edges boyfriend), James Saito as Dr. Bernard Sanjo and J.D. Evermore as Detective Connors.

‘Cloak & Dagger’ will be an hour-long drama, but it will join another Marvel series ‘The New Warriors’, a 30-minute sitcom on Freeform, a subsidiary of ABC, which airs ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’  Will Freeform become Marvel’s answer to The CW which is anchored by four consecutive nights of DC Comics-inspired shows?

What do you think of the ‘Cloak & Dagger’ trailer?  Is it fitting?  Or too YA?
