Peter Jackson has proven that he knows how to handle a franchise on the big screen with his ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy and now would like to try his hand at something smaller by tackling an episode of ‘Doctor Who‘ for BBC! Jackson has shared his love for the series for years and even jokingly offered to film on the ‘Mortal Engines‘ set “to help the BBC budget” for his episode!
While Jackson is keen to tackle the series, he will have to play catch up before he’d even be able to:
“I haven’t actually seen the new Doctor yet. I haven’t had to chance because I’ve been so busy on these films. I just have to get invited, and asked, and if we can figure it out, I would love to do a Doctor Who.”
Someone at BBC should sit up and take notice. Of course, this isn’t the first time Jackson has mentioned directing a ‘Doctor Who’ episode and came close at one point as former showrunner Steven Moffat had met with Jackson:
“He accepts that there’s no money and that there’s no time and it would have to be when he’s available… I think it will probably happen at some point.”
With ‘Mortal Engines’ not going to be consuming every aspect of Jackson’s life much longer, it could be the perfect time for BBC to jump on this chance to have the famed director tackle an episode or two. If the timing could be right, they could even incorporate some pretty fantastic sets to do so. In fact, Fran Walsh, who is Jackson’s wife and co-screenwriter of the ‘Mortal Engines’ film, has an idea on how it could be used as “[The Doctor] could end up on a giant moving city.”
Jackson further shared that “We’ve got a few spare giant moving cities we could throw into the mix. We could offer that up to help the BBC budget!”
