I started watching ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ when the shows creator Joel Hodgson was hosting in 1988 and I loved it! It reminded me of a group of my friends as we sat around on weekends watching cheesy Sci-Fi and making goofy quips… and laughing hysterically. Good times.
Well we have some good news for MKT3K fans! Hodgson plans to revive the show online. Hodgson has been inspired by, well, folks like myself and their stories of how much the show meant to them.
“I’m overwhelmed by how people took to that show. It really affected them. I thought, if enough people still love it, maybe we can bring it back. “Even avid viewers sometimes don’t realize that every major role in the show had been swapped out over time. So in my mind, the show is built to be refreshed with new people and new ideas. It’s like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle as it applies to ‘MST3K’: If it doesn’t change, it’s not the same show. And fortunately for us, as long as there are movies, there are always going to be cheesy movies.”
A new host will take the helm of the beloved “Satellite of Love” and some of our favorite dysfunctional misfits will make cameo appearances.
Can this work? Will the show get the viewers a reboot so desperately needs in order to thrive? Well… duh! I sure think so, and I’m fairly certain I’m not alone. Finding newer films to lash out at may prove difficult, but I have a feeling Joel and the team can pull it off. Let’s hope the reboot brings back some of the old fire that warmed our hearts. If so, you can bet it will be around for a long time!
Plans are to start up the reboot in the spring, so we should be hearing more news coming very soon. As usual, stay tuned right here for details as we get them!
