‘Wonder Woman’ hasn’t opened yet, but it’s all but given that it will be a big hit.  But will it be a one-hit… er, wonder?

Maybe.  At WonderCon, Geoff Johns, DC’s Chief Creative Officer was asked about a sequel, to which he simply responded:

“I can’t confirm that.”

Now some are curious as to whether Gal Gadot‘s live action take on the famous hero will be a one-and-done deal. The natural assumption for every inaugural superhero movie is that it’s just the first chapter in a larger franchise.  And nowadays, they also build upon even larger shared universes.  Does Johns’ statement cast doubt on the future of ‘Wonder Woman’?

Well, first of all maybe there is simply nothing to report.  Warner Brothers’ DC Comics film universe is just getting off the ground and it’s been something of a learning experience.  Fans rejected the darkness of ‘Batman V Superman’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ likewise met with mixed reaction.  And while ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Justice League’ and ‘Aquaman’ are guaranteed, the rest of the studio’s DC movies are in a state of flux, with ‘The Batman’ and ‘The Flash’ both having gone off the rails.  And there hasn’t been a peep regarding additional projects like ‘Sandman’, ‘Shazam’ or ‘Cyborg’ in months.

It’s entirely possible, WB is taking a wait and see approach.  Keep in mind, ‘Man of Steel’ hasn’t even received a proper sequel yet and that came out in 2013.  And Gadot’s Wonder Woman is guaranteed to be part of the ‘Justice League’ brand and possibly more.  It’s possible that WB is turning away from the traditional idea of sequels for its individual heroes and are instead leaning more toward world-building.

What do you think?  Are you concerned that ‘Wonder Woman’ may not get a sequel?  Or is it just too early to tell what to expect?
