True, Sony released the film on Blu-Ray/DVD, etc. on Tuesday, so fans can relive the adventure over and over at their leisure, but part of what set ‘Spider-Verse’ apart was its eye-popping visuals, which fused modern 3B computer animation with comic book-inspired old school 2D with various nods to its source material, including “color dots,” narration captions, and visual sound effects bursts.
At the Oscars, ‘Spider-Verse’ bested ‘Incredibles 2’, ‘Isle of Dogs’, ‘Mirai’, and ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’. This was the first time in eight years that a non-Disney picture won the award. In 2011, Paramount/Nickelodeon’s ‘Rango’ won… in a year when Disney didn’t release an animated film. ‘Spider-Verse’ beat not one, but two Disney pics, ‘Incredibles 2’ (from Pixar) and ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’. And while Disney and its subsidiary Marvel Studios have a deal in place to share the live-action Spider-Man (Tom Holland), ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ was strictly a Sony endeavor.
‘Spider-Verse’ didn’t just web up the Oscar. It has been THE animated film to beat all awards season, also taking home the gold at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Producers Guild of America Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and numerous other honors from smaller regional critics circles. It won seven Annie, the prizes reserved for the best in animation of the year, and as the best reviewed animated movie of 2018, it was given Rotten Totamotes’ Golden Tomato Award.
In a recent interview, co-director Bob Persichetti, discussed the success of ‘Into the Spider-Verse’, saying:
“We were working so hard, we were very late in delivering the film so we didn’t really have a moment of pause before the reactions started pouring in. So it was kind of shocking to immediately go from the mix stage to a premiere and a release, but the positivity has been so incredible.”
So get out there of you want one last chance to see ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ on the big screen one last time!
