In the real world, American and British ‘Star Wars’ fans are trying to get a Death Star built and launched into space. The huge undertaking was quickly shot down by the government, but for those still looking for tips on how to get one built, you can look to the originators of the intergalactic weapon of mass destruction.
On StarWars.com, Industrial Light & Magic has posted a timeline of their path to creating the Death Star for it’s first appearance in ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’, which started back in 1975. In addition to the creation of the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, the timeline chronicles events such as the opening of ILM in Van Nuys, California, the creation of some of the ground-breaking special effects featured in the first movie, and the filming of some of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history.

While it’s not likely that we’ll ever see a Death Star in real life, we can always look back fondly on the two that appear in the Trilogy (and briefly in the prequel trilogy). Who knows? Maybe we’ll see a newer one in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming trilogy. And if we do, hopefully ILM will lend their expertise in bringing it to life once again.
