Sometimes if you want to do something right, you have to do it yourself! That seems to be the attitude adopted by the team at Dark Horse Comics recently launched Dark Horse Direct division! This new branch of Dark Horse premiered earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and is planned as a way to bring collectors and consumers unique new products directly, rather than through third party sellers and distributors!
The key factor here is that all of the products produced by Dark Horse Direct are planned as ‘made to order’; meaning they will essentially post up a pre-order option for an extended period and then make exactly as many of each item as are ordered (with a few spares for quality control obviously). So if any items Dark Horse Direct is producing are on your wish list, don’t sleep on it because you might miss your chance! Once the pre-orders close these items are gone for good with no plans for additional production runs!
This may sound detrimental at first because not everyone always pre-orders things ahead of time but in reality, it’s quite the opposite! Utilizing this new system allows for Dark Horse Direct to go even bigger and bolder than ever before with the size and quality of the collectibles they are producing! They will know going into the production run just how many have already sold, and they won’t get stuck sitting on any old unsold stock in the end; which is a chronic problem in the high-end collectibles market. That makes the entire concept a win-win from start to finish for both Dark Horse and collectors! Key pieces announced so far include a super articulated 1:12 scale Hellboy action figure (plus the newly announced Abe Sapien!), a massive Ice-Dragon statue from ‘Game of Thrones’, and a gargantuan Spaceboy statue from ‘Umbrella Academy’!
