While we’re all eagerly awaiting ‘X-Force: A Deadpool Story’ it sounds like ‘Deadpool 3‘ might not be happening. It had previously been stated that we might not get a third film and while that no longer seems to be the case it now sounds like the next movie could actually be ‘Deadpool 4’ after ‘X-Force‘ comes out. In any other franchise that might sound ridiculous but for the Merc with the Mouth that sounds right on point.
The details came from co-writer Paul Wernick who was asked if another solo outing was in the cards or if we’d just see team-ups going forward:
“Calendar-wise, X-Force is next up in line. Drew is finishing up his movie [Bad Times at the El Royale]. Come the fall, I think he’ll turn his attention full-time to X-Force and so that’s next up in the series. I do think we are always thinking about Deadpool. It will be nice to take a little bit of a break. We’ve been writing consecutive Deadpool drafts for the last nine years. And we’ve got drafts since 2009 in our computer all the way through to 2018. So, it will be nice to kind of catch our breath. My guess is you will see Deadpool again in his own movie. Whether we skip Deadpool 3 and just go to Deadpool 4, I’m not sure. But my guess is you will be seeing much more of Deadpool in the future in various forms and fashions.”
It does sound like another movie is going to happen it will just be a question of when it could happen, assuming Fox’s future owners greenlight the project. Likely either Disney or Comcast would be fully behind this moving forward and hopefully in the same style which Ryan Reynolds has been playing the character so far.
If they did skip the third movie, I really hope they have a montage at the beginning of ‘Deadpool 4’ of what happened in the last installment which teases a significant story arc we all ended up missing.
