Jim Lee Confirms DC Universe Content Is Moving To HBO Max

Well, we all knew it was coming, but it appears to be official. DC Universe will continue to provide digital comics and a platform for fans to interact, but its original TV projects are moving over to HBO Max. HBO Max already offers the animated ‘Harley Quinn’ and live-action ‘Doom Patrol’, but according to Jim Lee, DC Comics’ sole publisher after the departure of Dan DiDio earlier this year, it sounds as though the remainder of DC Universe’s original continent will also shift over. That includes the live-action ‘Titans’ and animated ‘Young Justice’. Just weeks ago, DC Universe quietly stopped offering annual memberships. ‘Stargirl’, meanwhile, was moved over to The CW, where it has performed strongly. It was already announced that Season 2 would only be released via The CW and not DC Universe. The CW is also airing ‘Swamp Thing’ a live-action series that only lasted for one shortened season, and there have been faint rumbling that a second season could be in the cards if it performs well. Warner Bros. Animation wrapped up its shared universe of movies with ‘Justice League Dark: Apocalypse War’, and it seems it isn’t looking back. The upcoming Batman animated movie is a completely original story and takes the Caped Crusader back to the 1970s for a kung-fu-flavored action flick, entitled ‘Batman: Soul of the Dragon’. And in keeping with this fresh start, the voice cast is all-new. ‘Grimm’ star David Giuntoli is the latest actor to take on the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne. He was most recently seen on the ABC series ‘A Million Little Things’. In the story, Batman must team up with three of his former martial arts “classmates.” Mark Dacascos provides the voice of Richard Dragon. Dacascos is an actual martial artist and actor, having starred most recently in ‘One Night in Bangkok’. Fans of DC Comics and its various media had to have been disappointed that none of them were presented at San Diego Comic-Con’s virtual con this year. Instead, the WarnerMedia DC empire is holding its own virtual con, DC Fandome, on August 22. This event will take place for 24 hours. Back in 1988, DC pulled an unprecedented stunt– it invited comic readers to call one of two 1-900 phone numbers to vote on the outcome of the storyline “A Death in the Family.” Readers gleefully voted that Robin, Jason Todd, should die at the hands (or rather crowbar) of The Joker. The ploy gained major mainstream press attention, although much of it was negative, as it was perceived as being too bloodthirsty. Robin was a teenager after all, and most adults at the time had grown up with the wide-eyed, “Holy Everything!” Dick Grayson version of the character, whether in the books, played by Burt Ward on TV series, or on cartoons. Though there aren’t any details yet, a virtual table read of George Miller’s aborted ‘Justice League: Mortal’ will be held for charity. Along with ‘Superman Lives’/’Superman: Flyby’, ‘Batman Unchained’, and ‘Super Max’ (starring Green Arrow), this is one of those potentially great DC Comics movies that never got made, although its basic plot has been public knowledge for years now. In 2015, filmmaker Ryan Unicomb announced plans for a documentary that would delve deep into this unmade film, but it failed to materialize. Earlier this year, Unicomb announced that production on the doc would resume, under a new title, ‘Seven Friends: George Miller’s Justice League’. But until then, this table read may suffice if you’ve ever had any questions about this project. Okay, well… I’ve tried to be positive about this, buuuut… DC Universe has ceased offering annual memberships. This can really only mean one thing– DC Universe won’t be around for another year. The writing has been on the wall for a while. DC Universe’s original series are steadily being “shared” with other outlets with ‘Stargirl’ also airing on The CW, soon to be joined by ‘Swamp Thing’, while ‘Doom Patrol’ is also available on HBO Max, with ‘Harley Quinn’ joining it in a couple of weeks. Word arrived weeks ago that ‘Stargirl’ was moving entirely to The CW and would no longer be offered on DC Universe. The CW, DC Universe, and HBO Max are all owned by parent company WarnerMedia, and many have speculated that with the launch of the bigger, more expansive streaming platform, HBO Max, that DC Universe’s days were numbered. It was just announced at the beginning of July that ‘Harley Quinn’ was following in the footsteps of ‘Doom Patrol’, and would now be shared between original streaming platform DC Universe, and new service HBO Max. Both are owned by WarnerMedia. Now, if you subscribe to HBO Max and not DCU and have been wondering when ‘Harley Quinn’ would bring her animated chaos to your screen, the wait is almost over. HBO Max has announced that the first two seasons of ‘Harley Quinn’ will arrive on August 1. Both seasons will be released in their entirety. ‘Harley Quinn’ has rather shockingly become DCU’s most buzzed-about show and its appeal has been bolstered TBS airing the first episode, and Syfy running the entire first season. Matt Reeves Is Crafting A TV Series Tie-In To ‘The Batman’ For HBO Max

Holy Synergy, Batman! Matt Reeves, the helmer of the upcoming DC flick, ‘The Batman’ is crafting a companion TV series focusing on the Gotham Police Department for HBO Max. Reeves is collaborating with ‘Boardwalk Empire’s creator, Terence Winter, and ‘The Batman’ producer, Dylan Clark. The project originates from Warner Bros. Television. Winter is writing and the show will be set in the corrupt world of the GCPD that Reeves establishes in ‘The Batman’. The series will “build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City” created by Reeves in ‘The Batman’. Reeves recently signed an overall first-look deal with Warner Brothers and this is the first project to come from it. ‘Harley Quinn’ Is The Latest Show To Be Shared Between DC Universe And HBO Max

‘Doom Patrol’ started off as a DC Universe exclusive, but is now also available on the HBO Max streaming service, and now, ‘Harley Quinn’ is following in its footsteps. The first two seasons of ‘Harley Quinn’, consisting of 13 episodes each, will be released on HBO Max later this summer. ‘Harley Quinn’ Season 1 debuted last November, and Season 2 arrived this past April. This violent and explicit animated series has proven to a breakout hit and has received excellent reviews. Fan reaction has also been overwhelmingly positive. In December, TBS aired the show’s premiere episode, and this past May, Syfy aired the first season, so Warner Brothers has been really pushing this series in hopes of scoring a wider audience. ‘The Flash’: Reportedly, Michael Keaton Is Playing Bruce Not Thomas Wayne

We can officially lay to rest one line of speculation regarding Michael Keaton‘s planned return to the cowl in the role of Batman in ‘The Flash’. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmation from unidentified sources that Keaton will be playing the Bruce Wayne version of Batman, the same role he played in 1989’s ‘Batman’ and its sequel ‘Batman Returns’ in 1992. The same source confirmed that Keaton will wear the costume. Or at least a costume. It’s not clear if he will squeeze back into that hard-to-move-in foam rubber from his previous films (or at least a modern recreation) or if he will be given a new Bat-Suit. According to this source, Thomas Wayne doesn’t appear in the script at all. The news that Keaton was in talks to return as Batman in ‘The Flash’ caught fans off-guard last week. Well, here’s an update most people probably never thought they’d see! Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to return as Batman in ‘The Flash’ movie, which is in development. But wait! There’s more! According to sources (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter), Keaton is actually eyed to appear in multiple films, in a role compared to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as a “mentor” or possibly even as a “string-puller” to a younger generation of heroes. THR cited the long-in-development ‘Batgirl’ movie as one potential picture that could feature Keaton’s Dark Knight in this mentor capacity. This is somewhat similar to a recent RUMOR regarding Henry Cavill‘s ongoing involvement with the DC movies. Reportedly, plans were for him to take on a “Hulk-like” role as a supporting character in upcoming movies as opposed to starring in his own solo pictures. Director Joel Schumacher has died, following a long bout with cancer. He passed away in New York City on Monday morning. He was 80-years-old. Schumacher made a splash in the 1980s, crafting sleek, stylish films, starring some of Hollywood’s hottest young actors. Following two comedies, ‘The Incredible Shrinking Woman’ starring Lily Tomlin, and ‘DC Cab’ with Mr. T, he went on to helm the classics ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ (with Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy), ‘The Lost Boys’ (Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, and the Coreys– Haim and Feldman), and ‘Flatliners’ (Sutherland, William Baldwin, Kevin Bacon, and Julia Roberts). He went on to direct film adaptations of the bestselling John Grisham legal thrillers ‘The Client’ and ‘A Time to Kill’, the latter of which launched the career of Matthew McConaughey.
