The Tenth Doctor is coming to the rescue of the stalled animated adaptation of John Layman and Rob Guillory’s Image comic ‘Chew.’  David Tennant joins the voice cast that already includes Steven Yeun from ‘The Walking Dead‘ and Felicia Day from ‘Supernatural.’  Tennant is stepping into the role of Mason Savoy, a part that was originally going to be voiced by Robin Williams, before the troubled actor’s suicide last year.

Yeun plays the main character, Tony Chu and Day, his love interest Amelia.  Tennant’s part of Savoy will be that of a mentor for Chu, whose role later takes a twist.

Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He’’s been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases.

The adaptation is being directed by Jeff Krelitz who previously helmed the animated ‘Torchwood: Web of Lies’ and ‘Peter Panzerfaust.’  Krelitz is also executive producing the venture with David Boxenbaum, through their Heavy Metal brand.  Layman is providing the script based on his own comic series and is also executive producing with Guillory, who serves as the comic’s illustrator.

Tennant is currently recording his lines.  Yeun and Day actually already submitted theirs last year, before the project was placed on temporary hold.

Though he will probably never shed his image as possibly the most popular Doctor Who from the modern series, Tennant has won an Emmy for his voice work on ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ as ancient android Professor Huyang and most recently starred in the second season of the British series ‘Broadchurch.’ He also provided the voice of the narrator for ‘W1A’ and is currently filming the Netflix series ‘Marvel’s Jessica Jones,’ a part of the Marvel television universe, in which he plays Zebadiah Killgrave, the arch enemy of the title detective character, played by Kristen Ritter.

Though it will be feature-length, it is most likely that ‘Chew’ will go straight to DVD/BluRay.  Previously, Showtime had hoped to turn the comic into an animated series, although it would appear that those plans have changed.
