‘Gambit’ seems like it has been hexed. 20th Century Fox announced in 2014, that they were moving forward with a solo ‘Gambit’ movie starring Channing Tatum. Announced at the same time was ‘Deadpool’ starring Ryan Reynolds, which came out last year and became the highest grossing ‘X-Men’ film in the franchise’s history. Now it seems like that success has delayed ‘Gambit’ even more. Much more. But perhaps in a good way. The success of ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Logan’, both R-rated hits, breaking free of the typical superhero formula, has resulted in Tatum and his collaborators going back to the drawing board with ‘Gambit’ for a fresh, possibly riskier approach.
While promoting his newest film, ‘Logan Lucky’, Tatum took time to discuss ‘Gambit’, saying:

I think we got lucky – we got hit with some setbacks and it was all for a good reason. We were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn’t seen before. We kept running into the same problems, and then Deadpool and Logan came through and kicked the doors down. Now we’re really getting to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do with the script – we’ve just sort of started over.”
You may recall that Fox really didn’t want to make ‘Deadpool’ because they weren’t confident that an R-rated movie based on a character that wasn’t really well known to the general public would work. The studio only relented if the film could be made on a relatively low budget. You can bet they were stunned by the end result.
Later, the same year, ‘Logan’ scored big as well, despite its overall dark tone. Now that those two have broken the barrier, proving that superhero movies aimed strictly at adults can work, it sounds like ‘Gambit’ may be headed in the same direction.
Tatum wasn’t specific about the setbacks that he and his team ran into. The character Gambit isn’t outrageous of comedic like Deadpool. Nor is his past as dark and tortured as Wolverine, although he has had his share of loss. But since he comes from a guild of thieves perhaps the desire is to explore the seedy crime-filled background of Remy LeBeau.
