It’s been common knowledge to Star Trek fans for about a year now that beloved franchise writer/creator Nicholas Meyer has been working on a new Trek-related property, allegedly in the form of a brand-new film series. The speculation began in June 2017 when, in an interview with TrekMovie, Meyer coyly danced around the subject:
MEYER: One thing that has nothing to do with ‘Discovery’ is that I am working on another Star Trek project, but I can’t discuss that either.
TREKMOVIE: Are we talking more feature film because as far as I know, there is only one television project, I assume.
MEYER: You can assume.
Of course, the online fires of speculation were immediately stoked, and fans have wondered exactly what Meyer might be working on, with some folks even asking if Meyer’s work is tied at all to last year’s revelation that Quentin Tarantino is working on a new Star Trek film as well.
Now, thanks to Meyer’s recent appearance at a talk at the University of California-Irvine, things have become a bit more clear:
AUDIENCE QUESTION: A while back there were reports that you might be working on a Star Trek miniseries, is there any truth to that, if you’re allowed to say anything about that?
MEYER: No, I can say something. I was hired to write a stand-alone Star Trek-related [film] trilogy, [details of which] I can’t discuss or I’d have to kill you. [Laughs] I was writing it for CBS [All] Access… but at the moment CBS is at a war with Paramount/Viacom [about merging].
They’re in a power struggle which turned really nasty this past week when CBS decided to sue Viacom. So I don’t think my project is going anywhere in a hurry, because everything is on hold while they sort out this merger business. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.
The surprisingly informative response likely means that, sadly, Meyer’s project has been put on indefinite hold, as he seems to understand it. Whether or not this work will ever see the light of day – well, a Trek fan can dream!
