Later this year, Netflix will bring another old-school cartoon property back to live with their 5-part miniseries ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation,’ spearheaded by long-time pop-culture creator Kevin Smith. Serving as the showrunner and executive producer, Smith is joined by behind-the-scenes talent from the original ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ series, including Frederick Soulie as an executive producer and Susan Cordin as a producer. Longtime Smith co-collaborator Marc Bernardin serves as one of the writers, and the series’ music is composed by Bear McCreary. Speaking about what the original 1980s cartoon series meant to him, Smith had this to say: I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric. So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise. Kevin Smith Is Developing A Modern ‘Green Hornet’ Animated Series

Kevin Smith is developing another animated series, this one based on a property he knows well– ‘The Green Hornet’. Smith was hired to write a screenplay for a potential big-screen take on the pulp character by Miramax, but it never got made (and is unrelated to the 2011 version starring Seth Rogan from Columbia Pictures). Smith took his concept, which focused on the son of the original Green Hornet, and daughter of the original Kato, and turned it into a comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment. His new animated take sounds like it will have a lot in common with that, but for an all-ages audience. Smith announced: “It’s an honor to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters! Following his incendiary tweet accusing Joss Whedon of “gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable” behavior on the set of ‘Justice League’, Ray Fisher has followed up with another tweet. I believe Kai Cole and Charisma Carpenter. — Ray Fisher (@ray8fisher) July 3, 2020 Kai Cole is Whedon’s ex-wife. In 2017, as the #MeToo movement was building steam, she wrote an essay for The Wrap, including this statement: “Joss admitted that for the next decade and a half, he hid multiple affairs and a number of inappropriate emotional ones that he had with his actresses, co-workers, fans, and friends, while he stayed married to me.” She also revealed that Whedon used his “feminist” status to cover for his mistreatment of women, both real, and the characters in his various projects. Netflix has announced the stellar voice cast for its upcoming adult-targeted anime series ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’, which is being executive produced by Kevin Smith, who is also acting as showrunner. This cast should be music to everyone’s ears, as among the dream castings are Mark Hamill as Skeletor! Hamill is THE definitive voice of evil, as he has provided The Joker’s voice since ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in 1992. Starring alongside him will be ‘Game of Throne’s Lena Headey, ‘Supergirl’s Chris Wood and Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar! Wood fronts the series as He-Man and his alter ego, Prince Adam, while Gellar voices warrior woman Teela. Heady, best known for playing Cersei Lannister on ‘GoT’ will voice Evil-Lyn, the wicked sorceress who serves as Skeletor’s right-hand woman. ‘Joker’ Almost Had A Different Ending Which Would Have Driven Batman Fans Crazy

Love it or hate it, ‘Joker‘ has been a critical darling this year with Joaquin Phoenix‘s portrayal of Arthur Fleck bringing home an Oscar. While the Clown Prince of Crime may have laughed and danced his way through the box office, the ending of the film was almost completely different. Kevin Smith revealed this bit of trivia on his Fatman Beyond show and if this alternate ending had shown up on the big screen, it would have left Smith “outraged as a Batman fan!” It should be noted that there is a pretty big spoiler as to how the film actually ends below. As to what was changed, Smith shares he heard the following: “Originally, the ending in the hospital was different. He’s in the hospital, and he laughs chuckles, and he says, ‘I was just thinkin’ of something funny. What was supposed to happen was you flashed back to the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, and it was him killing Thomas and Martha Wayne, and the boy was screaming and crying, and he turned to walk away, and he turned back, shrugged, and shot the kid. It can be a mixed bag when a “genre” director makes a foray into a category that he/she has never tried before. For example, no one is stopping Rob Zombie from making a romantic comedy, but one has to wonder what the success of that film would look like. Heck, I even wonder what the title would look like – ‘The Devil’s Roses’? ‘House of 1,000 Delightful Misunderstandings’? There was a time, exactly a decade ago, when Kevin Smith had only ever made “Kevin Smith-style comedy” movies. It was with great intrigue at the time, then, that he took a very direct and intentional tonal shift. The man best known to his fans as “Silent Bob” effectively turned things on its ear with the release of ‘Red State,’ a horror film with serious undertones of social commentary. There was a lot of potential for the Marvel Hulu animated shows before the news that ‘Howard The Duck’ and ‘Tigra & Dazzler’ were canceled. We know that the original plan was to emulate both the MCU and Netflix’s shows by building to a giant team-up as had been done in both ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Defenders.’ Now, it seems impossible for this to happen. With these shows now being dead in the water, ‘Howard the Duck’ producer Kevin Smith is weighing in on the show being cancelled before it was even able to be aired. The news is bittersweet as it sounds as if geek extraordinaire Smith wants to find a way to return to working on something from Marvel sooner than later: Alas, Howard remains trapped in a world he never made. Marvel Scraps Hulu’s ‘Howard The Duck’ And ‘Tigra & Dazzler’ Animated Series

The culling of existing Marvel TV projects that originated under the old regime of Jeph Loeb and Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter continues. The latest victims are two adult-aimed animated series that were in development for Hulu– ‘Howard the Duck’ and ‘The Tigra & Dazzler Show’. These were announced almost a year ago, along with ‘M.O.D.O.K.’ and ‘Hit-Monkey’, with plans for all four to cross over in a special called ‘The Offenders’, a play on Netflix’s ‘Defenders’ which brought together the stars of its four solo Marvel shows, ‘Daredevil’, ‘Jessica Jones’, Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’. The decision to scrap them is said to have come from Marvel, not Hulu. (Both companies are now owned by Disney.) ‘M.O.D.O.K.’ and ‘Hit-Monkey’ are still a go. Just days ago, we received an update on ‘M.O.D.O.K.’, with the announcement of the voice cast, fronted by Patton Oswalt, who has been attached to this project since it was first announced. Kevin Smith Says His ‘Howard The Duck’ Series For Hulu Is Coming Along “So Far, So Good”

Early in December, it was announced that the entire writing staff of ‘Marvel’s Tigra & Dazzler Show’ had been fired and a new writer’s room was being assembled. This followed the major shakeup of Marvel Studios’ chief Kevin Feige being placed in charge of all things Marvel– the movies, TV, and comics. ‘Tigra & Dazzler’ was one of four adult animated series being developed for the streaming service, but now comes word that at least one of the other shows is safe. Appearing on the Fatman Beyond, Kevin Smith assured that his ‘Howard the Duck’ series is still coming along just fine. “Now, Marvel TV won’t cease to exist it’s just becoming this different version. I hear the Hulu shows are still alive. So far, so good for Howard the Duck. I’ll let you know if anything happens.” Patton Oswalt is developing another series, ‘M.O.D.O.K.’ about the bizarre Iron Man supervillain. Ever since we found that Kevin Smith was set to bring us ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation for Netflix, He-Man fans have been dying to know more! While the director of the upcoming anime series hasn’t dropped any names, he has hinted that the voice cast is going to be “insane,” and now we’re eager to hear more. The famed geek and director has rubbed shoulders with a slew of celebrities from A-List on down so the names will likely be familiar to genre fans and beyond. After having directed four episodes of ‘Supergirl’ and three of ‘The Flash’, Smith is stepping in front of the camera to host ‘Crisis Aftermath’, which is presumably a ‘Talking Dead’-like chat show that will help fans unpack all of the massive events of the upcoming mega-crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” One episode will air on Sunday, December 8th, after the “Crisis” episode of ‘Supergirl’, and the next will air on Tuesday, December 10, following ‘The Flash’. Last year, Netflix launched ‘She-Ra and the Princesses of Power’, a reboot of the ’80s cartoon series from Filmation, based on the Mattel toy line. Originally, ‘She-Ra’ was a spin-off from the male-oriented ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’, but the reboot exists on its own, without an existing ‘He-Man’ cartoon. However, that is going to change, as in August, Netflix announced a new ‘Masters of the Universe’ anime series from Kevin Smith, which will act as a sequel to the original Filmation series. The creator of the new ‘She-Ra’ series, Noelle Stephenson says she wants ‘She-Ra’ to cross over with the new ‘He-Man’ series in a Christmas special, akin to the one that was released back in 1985. Kevin Smith Thinks DC’s Writers Affect The Success of TV Shows And Movies

Kevin Smith, one-half of the stoner duo ‘Jay and Silent Bob’, has a theory on why the success of DC Comics TV shows surpasses that of big screen movies, and the reason is more obvious than you think. Some of you may know Smith, who gained a reputation through the low-budget comedy film ‘Clerks’ (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and acted in as the character Silent Bob. The actor and filmmaker recently made an appearance on PeopleTV’s ‘Couch Surfing’ to take a look back on some of his filmography, including the multiple episodes of ‘Supergirl‘ that he’s directed, and weighed in on the topic of success in terms of the DC Universe. He surmised that the success of DC’s TV shows versus movies is, in essence, dependent on the writers.
