Later this year, Netflix will bring another old-school cartoon property back to live with their 5-part miniseries ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation,’ spearheaded by long-time pop-culture creator Kevin Smith. Serving as the showrunner and executive producer, Smith is joined by behind-the-scenes talent from the original ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ series, including Frederick Soulie as an executive producer and Susan Cordin as a producer. Longtime Smith co-collaborator Marc Bernardin serves as one of the writers, and the series’ music is composed by Bear McCreary. Speaking about what the original 1980s cartoon series meant to him, Smith had this to say: I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric. So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise. Hasbro Pulls Objectionable ‘Trolls World Tour’ Doll After 160,000 Parents Sign Protest Petition

Hasbro is recalling its “Trolls World Tour Giggle and Sing Poppy” doll from toy shelves after over 160,000 individuals signed an online petition protesting it. The petition was created by Jessica McMains and directed toward Walmart, Target, Amazon, and other retailers, hoping to call attention to the doll which she and others consider offensive. Why? Well, the doll is designed to giggle when she is seated, but the sensor that activates this mechanism is located… under her skirt and between her legs. … Uhhh… ARE YOU F*&^ING KIDDING ME?! HOW DID THAT GET MADE IN THE FIRST PLACE?! THEY REALLY HAD TO BE TOLD THAT THIS WAS “BAD?!” IT TOOK 160,000 SIGNATURES BEFORE THEY REALIZED THAT THIS WAS A POORLY DESIGNED TOY… FOR CHILDREN?! San Diego Comic-Con’s @Home Event Was A Flop According To Social Media

It appears that Comic-Con@Home was a bust. Obviously, due to COVID-19, an actual in-person con couldn’t be held, so instead, organizers offered up streaming panels, featuring creators, cast members, and fans of popular comic books, TV shows, video games, and movies, and unlike the usual, these were absolutely free to everyone in the world. However, the social media analytics firm, ListenFirst, reports (via Variety) that buzz surrounding SDCC@Home was not just quieter than normal, it was practically muted. Tweets mentioning SDCC@H were only 5% those of 2019’s Comic-Con! That’s 93,681 tweets versus 1,719,000 last year. Specifically, tweets about the TV show panels were down 93%, and those about movies were down a mindblowing 99%! Ironically, SDCC@H’s most viewed panel was for a movie– ‘The New Mutants’. It has racked up over 208,000 views since its release last Thursday. The ‘New Mutants’ panel offered a Q&A with director Josh Boone and the cast, a first look at the movie’s opening scene, a new trailer, and six posters, copies of which were raffled off to viewers. Due to the COVID-19 shutdowns, one of the biggest pop culture events of the year, San Diego Comic-Con International, will not be held, but organizers have managed to pull together some of the biggest names in entertainment to provide a virtual Comic-Con that millions will be able to view from the safety and comfort of their homes. Just because the Con wraps up on Sunday doesn’t mean that the day isn’t packed full of panels to appeal to fans of all stripes. There is a celebration of the original ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ movies. There will also be a virtual gathering of various ‘Power Rangers’ from throughout the years. Due to the COVID-19 shutdowns, one of the biggest pop culture events of the year, San Diego Comic-Con International, will not be held, but organizers have managed to pull together some of the biggest names in entertainment to provide a virtual Comic-Con that millions will be able to view from the safety and comfort of their homes. Below are the panels for Saturday and once again, there seems to be something for every sort of fan, whether your thing is technology, gaming, manga and anime, animation, collecting or just about anything else that’s good and nerdy. ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ returns for a victory lap, in celebration of its final season. Keanu Reeves will pop up twice, as part of a retrospective for ‘Constantine’ and for his upcoming film, ‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’. ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Is Getting Another Cinematic Reboot In CGI From Seth Rogan’s Point Grey Pictures

Those irrepressible champions of justice, the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ are headed back to the big screen, courtesy of Nickelodeon Movies (who produced the last two live-action pictures) with Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver producing. The new version will be CGI, not live-action. Jeff Rowe, who co-directed the upcoming animated Sony film ‘Connected’, will helm this reboot. He previously worked as a writer for ‘Gravity Falls’ and Netflix’s ‘Disenchantment’. Brendan O’Brien who co-wrote the two ‘Neighbors’ flicks, ‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’, and ‘The House’ will pen the screenplay. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had one prior CGI film, 2007’s ‘TMNT’. Altogether, the movie franchise has generated $1.15 billion since the release of the first live-action ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ in 1990. This new film will mark the first feature-length CGI movie for Nickelodeon. Disney Cancels Star Wars Celebration 2020; Reschedules For 2022

The Force isn’t with us this year (which should be quite obvious at this point). 2020’s Star Wars Celebration has been canceled. The event was set to take place at the Anaheim Convention Center on August 27-30. It has been postponed until August 18-21, 2022, but will remain at the same venue. It has traditionally not been an annual gathering, which is why the delay is for two years, and there was one just last year. The first Star Wars Celebration took place in April-May 1999 and has spread to include local conventions in Europe and Japan. Unlike, say, San Diego Comic-Con, Star Wars Celebrations float around to different locations, allowing for more fans access. This is the first one to ever be canceled. Those who purchased tickets to this year’s show have the option of obtaining a refund or rolling their tickets over to the 2022 gathering. Those that pre-ordered exclusive merchandise can choose to either still receive it or request a refund. (Who would do that?!) Mattel and Disney are teaming up again for a second assortment of glamorous, high-fashion Barbie dolls inspired by ‘Star Wars’ (“Star Wars x Barbie”). The first series, announced last August, is now available in stores for the MSR price of $100 each. Those dolls were inspired by Darth Vader, R2-D2, and Princess Leia. The new assortment consists of four dolls based on Rey, C-3PO, Stormtroopers, and Chewbacca. The Chewbacca is a deluxe doll– thanks to all that faux fur– so it retails for $150. The dolls are now available to preorder. As you can see, these aren’t doll versions of the classic ‘Star Wars’ characters, but rather dolls that use the movie characters as inspiration for avant-garde designs. Netflix’s groundbreaking and critically-acclaimed animated series ‘She-Ra and the Princesses of Power’, from Dreamworks Animation, is getting ready for one final battle. The show’s fifth and last season will be released on May 15, and the streaming service has unleashed a trailer that captures the ominous tone of the new episodes. In the fourth season, it appeared that Adora had permanently lost access to the powers of She-Ra, after her mystic sword was shattered. During these trying times, some folks are still struggling to bring you entertainment while many are self-quarantining, and the Nacelle Company is among them. Having already delivered the infinitely binge-able docuseries ‘The Toys That Made Us’ and ‘The Movies That Made Us’ to Netflix, the Nacelle Company is working on a new series focusing on vintage toy stores across the country. The first season will consist of ten 30-minute episodes, which will “show the history of these stores, what they sell, how they keep their shelves stocked with unique items and how they are navigating such a specific market.” (via Deadline) The subject of the first episode will be Billy Galaxy Vintage Toys and Collectibles in Portland Oregon. You may have never thought about it, but there is one person to thank for delivering these hits, as well as ‘The Smurfs’, ‘Goosebumps’, ‘Muppet Babies’, and ‘Fraggle Rock’ — TV executive Margaret Loesch. Loesch can be seen in episodes of Netflix’s ‘The Toys That Made Us’, and the company that made that series is dedicating an entire documentary to Loesch and her role in shaping a generation of childhoods. In a fairly unexpected move, last fall the team at Wicked Cool Toys (a recently acquired subsidiary of Jazwares) recently announced that they had taken over the master toy license for the iconic ‘Halo’ video game franchise! Fans were eagerly awaiting more news following the announcement, but sadly were left waiting for news that would never come. Until now that is! It has officially been a year since Hasbro kicked off their new ‘Power Rangers: Lightning Collection’ line of 6″ figures! The line, which is geared towards collectors and fans of the overall ‘Power Rangers’ legacy than to the most current iteration of the brand, has been a rousing success, to say the least.
