Speaking about what the original 1980s cartoon series meant to him, Smith had this to say: I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric. So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise. A big reason we got such top tier voice talent is because people genuinely want to be a part of this world. So many of us were touched by these stories and these characters early in our lives […]

Wood fronts the series as He-Man and his alter ego, Prince Adam, while Gellar voices warrior woman Teela.  Heady, best known for playing Cersei Lannister on ‘GoT’ will voice Evil-Lyn, the wicked sorceress who serves as Skeletor’s right-hand woman. In addition, the Batman to Hamill’s Joker, Kevin Conroy will also be lending his voice to the series as Mer-Man.   RELATED:  Dead On Delivery: Mark Hamill Reveals His Favorite Joker Monologue From ‘Batman: The Animated Series’   Smith announced this voice cast, stating: “I cannot believe the lineup of talent I get to play with.  The incredible, star-studded cast that Mattel’s Rob David and Netflix’s Ted Biaselli assembled for our Masters […]

This news was confirmed by Aaron Couch of The Hollywood Reporter: Sony has moved #Uncharted back 3 months. It now opens 3/5/2021. Masters of the Universe has been taken off the calendar (it previously occupied Uncharted’s new date) — Aaron Couch (@AaronCouch) January 25, 2020 The last update on this troubled production was in October when the rumor emerged that Sony was considering sending it straight to Netflix instead of theaters.  That sort of begs the question of why the studio plans to make it at all.  Netflix would make a nice home for a ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie as it has two separate cartoons based on the property in the works– ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’, an adult-skewing anime, with Kevin Smith producing, and ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’, an all-ages take.  It already hosts the critically acclaimed […]

In addition to the TV series, DC Comics will publish a tie-in comic book series, and perhaps most excitingly, Mattel plans to relaunch the toy line!   RELATED:  Kevin Smith Will Spearhead ‘Masters Of The Universe: Revelation’ Anime For Netflix   Here is the series’ logline: “On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! First, in 1985, an elaborate float was created by Mattel to promote its popular ‘Masters of the Universe’ and ‘Princess of Power’ toy lines.  The front of the float was a recreation of Castle Grayskull, while the rear was the Crystal Castle.  A giant serpent towered in between. Below you can find concept art for the float: This was one of the most technically advanced floats to ever appear in the Macy’s parade. Riding on the float were He-Man and She-Ra, their allies Angella, Buzz-Off, Castaspella, Frosta, Glimmer, Man-at-Arms, Moss Man, Orko, and Teela, and villains like Hordak, Skeletor, Beast Man, Catra, and Grizzlor.  Interestingly, even though the float was presumably meant to promote the toys, the ‘She-Ra’ characters are actually based on the way the characters looked on the cartoon, for instance, Castaspella’s outfit is blue and […]

While the director of the upcoming anime series hasn’t dropped any names, he has hinted that the voice cast is going to be “insane,” and now we’re eager to hear more. The famed geek and director has rubbed shoulders with a slew of celebrities from A-List on down so the names will likely be familiar to genre fans and beyond. Smith took to Twitter to reveal the following tease:   The voice cast of the @MastersOfficial series I’m doing for @Mattel & @netflix is INSANE! Goyer, who was at one time attached to direct, was among the executive producers.  And heartthrob Noah Centineo was actively packing on the muscle to portray the ridiculously ripped barbarian hero, He-Man.  Sony had confidence that this picture would finally get made and scheduled it to be released on March 5, 2021. Now word has surfaced that Sony may wind up dumping it on Netflix rather than releasing it in theaters.  Sony is flying high after the $1 billion success of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, and Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood’ is the top-grossing original film of the year.  But Sony has also had a string of underperformers and outright flops, the worst being the expensive ‘Men in Black: International’, which Sony had hoped would kick off a new franchise.  Sony is reportedly looking to avoid another expensive, high-profile dud.   RELATED:  Throwback Thursday: ‘Masters of the Universe’ (1987)   […]

Man-at-Arms and Teela meet up with He-Man, who has helped to free a captured Thenurian locksmith prisoner named Gwildor. You see, Gwildor made a key that uses sound frequencies to open gateways into any place in the universe and his invention was stolen by Evil-Lyn, who gave it to Skeletor for the invasion. What the evil-doers don’t know is that Gwildor has a functioning prototype and things are about to get hairy. When their effort to take back Grayskull and free the Sorceress fails, Gwildor, He-Man, Teela, and Man-at-Arms are sent hurtling through a wormhole to planet Earth, where they meet some humans that are their solution to getting home and saving Eternia from Skeletor’s evil clutches. The ‘Masters of the Universe’ live action movie came out in 1987 and starred the blonde mountain-of-a-man Dolph Lundgren, who was probably most recognizable at that time as movie character Drago, who killed Apollo Creed in ‘Rocky IV.’ Aesthetically, this film’s executives chose well: Dolph donned that He-Man costume with the swagger of a man who knew that he looked damn good […]

Hurting after the failure of several toy lines that tied into mediocre films, Mattel attempted to craft its own brand that wasn’t tethered to anything as ephemeral.  Smashing past the scale of ‘Star Wars’ (but shy of the 12″ scale of the original ‘G.I. Joe’), the ‘MotU’ toys were hulks of muscle on top of muscle, merging conventions of science fiction and fantasy. In the ‘Power of Grayskull’, Mattel employees recall the brainstorming and spitballing that went into the early creation and development.  The exact genesis (and more specifically, the credit) of this line has been somewhat controversial over the years, […]
