Gemma Chan Is Reportedly In Talks To Join 'Eternals'
Marvel Studios/Disney

Reportedly, Gemma Chan is in talks for a role in the upcoming Marvel Studios film ‘Eternals’ to be directed by Chloé Zhao.  Chan appeared earlier this year in ‘Captain Marvel’ as the Kree sniper Minn-Erva, but rumor has it, she is negotiating for an entirely different role in ‘Eternals’, which would mark the first time an actor has played two separate characters in the MCU, although a couple of actors that have appeared (or will appear) in the movies and the TV shows as different characters.  Mahershala Ali was just announced as starring in ‘Blade’ after having appeared on Netflix’s ‘Luke Cage’ as Cornell ‘Cottonmouth’ Stokes, while Alfre Woodard has played Mariah Dillard on ‘Luke Cage’ and Miriam in ‘Captain America: Civil War’.  But the TV shows are handled by Marvel Entertainment’s TV division, and the movies are from Marvel Studios, a separate subsidiary under Disney.  While the shows acknowledge the events of the movies, the movies don’t reciprocate.

Should Chan sign on for ‘Eternals’, she would join a cast that also includes Angelina Jolie as Thena, Salma Hayekas the leader of this race, Ajak; Brian Tyree Henry as weaponsmith Phastos; Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) as Gilgamesh the Forgotten One; Richard Madden as Ikaris; Lia McHugh, as Sprite; Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo Sunen; and Lauren Ridloff, the former Miss Deaf America, as Makkari, who will be Marvel’s first deaf superhero.

It’s unknown who Chan would play, but just a blind guess would be the character that Jolie was expected to play, before she was announced as Thena, and that’s Sersi, an outgoing immortal who loves living among humans.  Then again, three male characters from the comics– Ajak, Sprite, and Makkari– have been gender-swapped for the film, so she could be playing anyone.

Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, the comic book is set millions of years in the past, when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans to create super-powered individuals known as the Eternals, along with the villainous Deviants. The two groups battled each other throughout history. The Eternals also warred with Greek, Roman and Norse deities before leaving Earth to explore the stars.

In addition to ‘Captain Marvel’, Chan may be recognized for starring in the TV series ‘Humans’ or in the film ‘Crazy Rich Asians’.

‘Eternals’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 6, 2020.
