It has been back and forth about Sony’s ‘Venom’ project and whether it will have any ties whatsoever to the MCU and the Spider-Man played by Tom Holland, who at one point was rumored to cameo in ‘Venom’ as Peter Parker. Amy Pascal of Sony continues to change her tune about whether ‘Venom’ is MCU “adjunct’ or not part of the MCU, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige (as well as other players like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo) adamantly claiming that ‘Venom’ is NOT part of the MCU. Fans have been skeptical as studios nowadays have been known to contradict themselves and even outright lie when trying to keep a secret a surprise for the fans, but it seems pretty clear now that ‘Venom’ is just a Sony standalone project, especially after a recent Entertainment Weekly report that seems to finally confirm the fact.
Here’s the excerpt from the EW report on the matter that seems to confirm that ‘Venom’ is officially not part of the MCU:
“Venom is the first of Sony’s new films based on characters from the Spider-Man comics, although it’s a separate world from last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. (It’s also not part of the deal between Sony and Disney that allows Tom Holland’s Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe).”
I’m personally torn about this one, as I don’t particularly think Sony knows what they are doing, and I think they are going to do terrible films with the Spider-Man characters (the footage we have seen so far from ‘Venom’ is not that encouraging), but on the other hand, this might also mean these characters CANNOT appear in the MCU at all, which makes me sad as these are some of Spider-Man’s classic enemies, frenemies, and allies, and it would have been nice to see them pop-up in his adventures as well.
Ah well, here’s to hoping it all gets sorted out and revealed soon, and that maybe Sony knows a little more of what they are doing than what it looks like. We’ll just have to wait until ‘Venom’ premieres to know for sure.
