But it seems that producer Amy Pascal may revive the project.  Pascal just moved her development deal over to Universe last year, after having spent years at Sony, where she produced, among other projects, the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise. Said one Universal insider: “Amy expressed interest in being involved with The Bride of Frankenstein, and just as the studio has done with numerous other filmmakers, we empowered her to explore a new vision for the Universal monster character and come back with a new and inventive take.  Nothing has been solidified in an official capacity.” Universal is determined to mine its rich classic monster franchises, but after the big-budget flop of ‘The Mummy’, is exploring lower-priced options.  The first product to come from this approach, ‘The Invisible Man’, […]

The first moment shows the titular Morbius (Jared Leto) walking past a spray-painted image of Spider-Man with the word “Murderer” scrawled across it, a clear connection to the hero that established that not only does Spider-Man already exist in this universe Sony is creating, but that it just might be Tom Holland’s Spider-man from the MCU, as the words “Murderer” may be the result of the fake news at the end of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ where Mysterio posthumously frames Peter Parker for his death. Which would mean that Sony’s universe is an extension of the MCU itself and set up future movies where Spider-Man can make an appearance without having to worry about doing his origin story all over again. The only thing negating this idea is the fact that the Spider-Man in the graffiti more closely resembles the look of the Sam […]

There may be something that happens with that.” The Sinister Six has gone through multiple lineups, so almost all of Spider-Man’s major foes have been members at one time or another.  The original roster, in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man Annual’ #1 (1964), consisted of Doctor Octopus (who assembled the team and acted as leader), Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, and the Vulture.  So far, only the Vulture and Mysterio have appeared in the current cycle of movies, but Mysterio is dead, meaning that Vulture is the only one that could show up as a member.   RELATED:  Could Mysterio Join Sony’s Eventual Sinister Six? Holland took to Instagram to share a clip from ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ in which Leonardo DiCaprio shouts “I’m not f***in’ leaving!  The show goes on!”   View this post on Instagram   😏 A post shared by Tom Holland (@tomholland2013) on Sep 27, 2019 at 8:41am PDT Zendaya reacted by posting a dancing Spidey GIF on Twitter: pic.twitter.com/VNSRL27Y8Z — Zendaya (@Zendaya) September 27, 2019 Sony crushed fans last month, with the announcement that it would be proceeding with its ‘Spider-Man’ franchise without Feige, Marvel Studios, and Disney.  Now, a deal has been reached which would allow Feige to come back to produce one last picture, along with Pascal Productions’ Amy Pascal, who has been there alongside Feige throughout this current cycle, and also produced ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’. Feige expressed: “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.  Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.” Longtime ‘Spidey’ producer Amy Pascal added: “This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.  This has been a winning partnership for the studios, the franchise, and the fans and I’m overjoyed it will continue.” Fans were livid and extremely vocal about their displeasure over Feige’s termination, with many vowing to boycott […]

From the beginning, Disney/ Marvel had taken a smaller cut just for the opportunity to use their flagship character in the MCU and had allowed Sony to reap most of the profits just so Peter Parker/ Spider-Man could appear alongside Iron-Man and Captain America and the other MCU favorites. And now that Marvel is finally asking for their fair share, after re-invigorating the character after Sony had tried and tried for so many years to reboot and rework the franchise, Sony shoots them down and walks away, thinking they have it all figured it out now.   RELATED: [UPDATED] What The F—?!: Sony Severs Ties With Kevin Feige And Marvel Studios On ‘Spider-Man’ Flicks Moving Forward   And to add insult to injury, according to a Sony spokesman attempting to spin recent events to make the […]

I like Black Cat a lot, I think she is a really great character. We had her a little bit in the Amazing [Spider-Man] movie, but she’s kind of that character that we didn’t really turn into the Black Cat yet. I think that’s a really great character… We’re still working on that. I think we have plans for that”. Felicity Jones appeared in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ as the Black Cat’s alter ego, Felicia Hardy, with plans for her to adopt the Black Cat identity in sequels, but those never came to be.  In 2017, it was announced that the character would headline a movie called ‘Silver & Black’, along with global adventurer Silver Sable.  Christopher Yost was announced as writing it with Gina Prince-Bythewood later signing on to direct.  Production was supposed to begin in 2018 but was put on indefinite hold.  It was scheduled to shoot in 2019, […]

News of this spin-off emerged a few weeks ago, with Bek Smith (‘Zoo’) named as the writer, with Amy Pascal producing, and Avi Arad, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord attached, most likely as executive producers, although that hasn’t been clarified. Joaquim Dos Santos was listed as the director, but now it appears that the job is going to Lauren Montgomery, with Dos Santos tackling the ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel. What wasn’t known was which Spider-Women would join Spider-Gwen in this cinematic endeavor.  Well, now we know– ‘Spider-Women’ will costar Jessica Drew and Silk! Jessica Drew was the first Spider-Woman and remains perhaps the most famous.  She premiered in 1977 and was Archie Goodwin and Marie Severin.  She has super strength, agility, and speed and can stick to walls like most Spider-heroes.  Unlike most, she can fly/glide and fire […]

Spider-Gwen is the Gwen Stacy from the parallel universe of Earth-65, who gained powers instead of Peter Parker.  She currently headlines the ‘Marvel Rising’ initiative, which includes dolls and a cartoon series, in which Dove Cameron voices her.  On ‘Marvel Rising’, she goes by the code name Ghost-Spider. Reportedly, ‘Spider-Women’ “will focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers.”  Other than Spider-Gwen, it’s unclear who these other ‘Spider-Women’ will be.  The first and most popular Spider-Woman is Jessica Drew, a character that has no connection to Peter Parker, other than serving alongside him in the […]

Making It Stick: It Seems Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Is Happening After All https://sciencefiction.com/2018/07/18/making-stick-seems-sonys-spider-man-universe-happening/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/07/18/making-stick-seems-sonys-spider-man-universe-happening/#disqus_thread Wed, 18 Jul 2018 17:50:28 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=291596 These are confusing times indeed for ‘Spider-Man’ fans, as we still have a bright new hope in Tom Holland’s version of the web-slinger in the MCU proper (even if he is “technically” dead at the moment thanks to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’), and yet Sony INSISTS on moving forward with their shared “Spider-Man” Movie universe which may or may not include Spider-Man himself. And while Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige continue to add to the confusion with conflicting statements about whether ‘Venom’ is MCU adjacent or whether Tom Holland will make an appearance in the movie, Sony continues to make plans with ‘Silver and Black‘ about Spidey frenemies Silver Sable and Black Cat (though the release date for this one was recently pushed back from 2019) and ‘Morbius the Living Vampire,’ with Jared Leto set to star as the tortured scientist turned blood-sucker. But is there enough here to make a shared universe, especially without Spider-Man/ Peter Parker in the mix as the connecting thread? According to Emily Carmichael, one of the writers on ‘Pacific Rim Uprising,’ she knows for a fact that Sony has A LOT to work with for their shared Spidey Universe. In her words: “I was one […]

Amy Pascal of Sony continues to change her tune about whether ‘Venom’ is MCU “adjunct’ or not part of the MCU, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige (as well as other players like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo) adamantly claiming that ‘Venom’ is NOT part of the MCU. Fans have been skeptical as studios nowadays have been known to contradict themselves and even outright lie when trying to keep a secret a surprise for the fans, but it seems pretty clear now that ‘Venom’ is just a Sony standalone project, especially after a recent Entertainment Weekly report that seems to finally confirm the fact. Here’s the excerpt from the EW report on the matter that seems to confirm that ‘Venom’ is officially not part of the MCU: “Venom is the first of Sony’s new films based on characters from the Spider-Man comics, although it’s a separate world from last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. (It’s also not part of the deal between Sony and […]

Silk.  But that just seemed like grasping at straws and nothing about her appearance in ‘Homecoming’ suggested she was anything more than one of Peter Parker’s normal classmates.  But now comes word that the rumors were true all along!  Espensen’s Cindy’s last name is Moon and Sony is collaborating with Marvel Studios to spin her off into her own film! In the comics, Cindy Moon was on the same field trip as Peter, when she was also bitten by a radioactive spider.  She gained a different set of arachnid powers, including the ability to shoot webs from her fingers.  She also has an eidetic (photographic) memory, a “Silk Sense” stronger than Peter’s Spider Sense and while she does not have the same level of strength as Peter, she is faster. Though her role in ‘Homecoming’ was smaller than those of Michelle “MJ” Jones (Zendaya) or Liz Toomes (Laura Harrier), Espensen was one of only two ‘Homecoming’ co-stars to pop up briefly in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ along with Jacob Batalon‘s Ned Leeds. ‘Homecoming’ producer […]

A while back the rumor had been that Riz Ahmed was cast in the role of Carnage, but since then we have learned that he is more likely playing Carlton Drake in the film, who in the comics is the CEO of the life foundation, a man who experiments on the venom symbiote to create the “five symbiotes” found in the ‘Lethal Protector’ venom comic book arc that many are claiming the movie is going to be based on. So with Ahmed out, many had given up hope of seeing Carnage in the film, but Tom Hardy himself has rekindled that hope, with a recent post to Instagram (spotted by the good folks over at Comicbook.com) that put the spotlight on some Venom/ Carnage fan art, which he deleted not long after posting it. Fans are saying that Hardy’s post, combined with the knowledge about the “five symbiotes” and the ‘Lethal Protector’ arc are all hinting at more symbiotes […]
