Big news for fans of ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ and Ryan Gosling. A new prequel film to the famous film from Warner Bros is looking to cast the ‘La La Land’ star in the title role.
After more than a decade in starring roles, Gosling is much sought after nowadays, especially after the aforementioned turn in ‘La La Land’ and his highly anticipated role in Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner 2049’ set to come out later this year. It has been commented that Gosling’s deadpan line deliveries and more subtle comedic chops are far more in line with what fans expect from the character of Willy Wonka than say what Johnny Depp delivered back in 2005 with the Tim Burton reboot. Personally, I could see the man give a great turn as Wonka, especially if he pays homage to the character as performed by the great Gene Wilder.
And while the current rumor is that Warner Bros is looking for an actor between the ages of 25-35 for the role of the young Wonka in the prequel, Gosling’s age of 36 does not disqualify him from playing the character, especially if he hits every other mark they are looking for. Of course, whether or not Gosling’s involvement is enough to temper fans who are already displeased with the notion of a prequel is yet to be determined, especially since it will not be based on any work of author Roald Dahl (who wrote the original ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ back in 1971) . But at least if they make it more musical and with more dance numbers, similar to the Gene Wilder film, we know Gosling can handle it.
What are your thoughts on Gosling stepping into the Wonka shoes? Do you think he would even consider taking the role? Is it a movie you would want to see made? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
