If Marvel were a monarchy, then Stan Lee would be the king. But much like the British royal family in this day and age, this king is mostly a figurehead. Regardless, both are still kept in the loop when new business comes up despite not actually having any control over it. Because of this, fans often ask The Man about what’s going on at Marvel Studios and their upcoming slate. In the past, he’s talked about The Inhumans, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther, but now there’s a new name to add to that list.
In an interview with MTV Geek while attending the recent Wizard World convention in New York City, Lee revealed that a solo movie for the Silver Surfer could be in the works. In fact, when asked about the upcoming Marvel movies that he knows about, he basically said how could they not make one for the Silver Surfer:
“Well, let me put it to you this way: Back at Marvel, they are frantically looking for what is the next one they’re going to do. There is no way they won’t eventually do a Silver Surfer movie. It may not be for a few years because they’re thinking and working on ‘Doctor Strange’, ‘Black Panther’, ‘Ant-Man’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Everything we have. And the fans seem to want all of them. But they’ll get around to a Silver Surfer feature because he’s a wonderful character.”
Since Fox is talking about rebooting their ‘Fantastic Four’ franchise, it would be pretty cool to see the herald of Galactus get his own feature since he was last seen alongside Marvel’s First Family in ‘Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer’. He’s a very interesting character and could definitely carry his own film if presented in the right way. Plus, if Mark Millar and the crew at Fox are looking to expand their own Marvel Cinematic Universe, then the Surfer would be a good way to build on whatever they set up in the new Fantastic Four flick. Maybe there could even be a crossover between the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the Silver Surfer as they take on Galactus.
However, the ultimate bummer here is that if any of this did actually go down, it would happen without any involvement from The Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, or any other Marvel Studios hero that Fox doesn’t have the rights to. Since the studios can’t come to some sort of compromise about sharing character rights, it’s looking like we’ll never see Wolverine team up with the Hulk or Silver Surfer join forces with Star-Lord.
So what say you, ScienceFiction.com readers? Are you open to a Silver Surfer solo feature film? Do you think Stan Lee is just saying that because he wants the film to happen or do you think Fox whispered in his ear that it’s on the way? Let us know your take on this in the comments.
