Are you a DC or a Marvel? Every comic fan gets asked to pick sides between the two publishers, and that has only intensified now that both companies have high-profile, big-budget movies in theaters every few months. And while Marvel might be doing a lot better financially, the DC heroes are just as iconic, if not more so, and certainly have a legion of devoted fans. But does one have to hate one in order to prove their love for the other?
One “person” doesn’t think so, and that’s snack cake impresario Little Debbie. When asked on Twitter to take sides by comic book writer Gail Simone, who has written for both companies, Little Debbie diplomatically paid compliments to each.
Dear Gail,
Are you referring to the movies? We enjoy Marvel’s ambition and general success in building a complex cinematic universe with diverse heroes. But we also appreciate DC Universe’s willingness to allow each hero’s story to be told in unique ways. So both. https://t.co/KojpYEIk7v

Little Debbie then went on to a deeper contemplation on the nature of rivalries in our culture.
Which leads us to a greater thought: Our culture is obsessed with competition and comparison; we can’t simply appreciate things for what they are. Preferences are fine, but often, people act as if they have to hate one thing in order to remain loyal to the other. That’s bad.

Little Debbie isn’t the first snack cake conjurer to refuse to take sides. In the 1970s, Hostess treats were tactfully used by both DC and Marvel heroes to foil crimes when all else failed.
Here’s a “Little” secret: Little Debbie and Hostess are now owned by the same company, McKee Foods, which got its humble start during the Great Depression. Little Debbie is known for its individually wrapped sweets, including Fudge Rounds, Honey Buns, Nutty Bars, Oatmeal Creme Pies, Star Crunch, Swiss Rolls, Zebra Cakes, and more. Since both Little Debbie and Hostess are technically the same company, there’s no need to take sides between these two. Another rivalry squashed!
Do you agree with Little Debbie? Or do you definitely have a preference between DC and Marvel?
