Toy Fair 2019: Hasbro Celebrate’s 80 Years of Marvel With New ‘Legends’ and More!
Comic books and superheroes are the modern day fairy tales and as such should be celebrated as the cornerstones of today’s popular culture. This year marks the 80th Anniversary of Marvel Comics, one of the largest publishers in the industry, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! The team at Hasbro seems to be on the same boat as us, because this year at New York Toy Fair they showcased an insane amount of new Marvel products including collectibles based on both comics and the live action films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Starting off we have their new collection of 6″ ‘Marvel Legends’ figures that will be releasing under the ’80 Years Of Marvel’ banner which will include a number of single figures and figure 2-packs based on some of the most iconic versions of some of your favorite Marvel characters. For single releases, there will be classic versions of Ironman and Thor, as well as a Walmart exclusive Captain America figure! There will also be two packs of a classic styled Hulk figure with a ‘First Appearance’ Wolverine, as well as a classic 80’s style Colossus with an updated version of The Juggernaut!
Moving right along, sadly Hasbro wasn’t able to show off anything from their line based on the latest upcoming Marvel film ‘Avengers: Endgame’, but as most collectors will tell you, Hasbro has been splitting their waves of Marvel Legends figures pretty evenly between figures based on the films and figures based on their comic book counterparts, so Hasbro take the opportunity to show off the comic styled figures that will be releasing in the next two ‘Avengers’ themed waves of ‘Marvel Legends’! In Wave 1 of the new ‘Avengers’ themed ‘Marvel Legends’ for 2019 fans can look forward to Citizen V, The Living Laser, Hercules, Nighthawk, and Ebony Maw (as seen in last year’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’), while Wave 2 will consist of Union Jack, Beta Ray Bill, a classic styled Loki, Rock Python, and (better late than never) Princess Shurri from last year’s ‘Black Panther’ film! There will also be a new comic styled vehicle set of WWII Steve Rogers with his motorcycle!
For X-Men Fans Hasbro has a double dose of new items that you’re sure to love! First up is a whole new ‘X-Force’ themed wave of ‘Marvel Legends’ including a number of fan favorite characters like Boom Boom, Cannonball, Mr. Sinister, Guardian, and Nightcrawler! There will also be an ‘X-Men’ themed wave of the ‘Marvel Vintage’ line that is based on the classic 90’s Toybiz ‘X-Men’ figures! The packaging is designed to look like the original cardbacks we saw on the pegs of our favorite toy stores in the early 1990’s and will feature similar character designs upgraded to the 6″ ‘Marvel Legends’ style including ‘X-Factor’ Cyclops, Silver Samurai, Wolverine (Black Costume), and Dazzler (in her 90’s style bomber jacket)!
Swinging right on over to their ‘Spider-Man’ themed wave, Hasbro took this opportunity to show off two new figures from this summer’s ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ with two new figures of everyone’s favorite wallcrawler himself, Spider-Man! One figure is an all new black stealth suit, while the other appears to be a red and black costume similar to what he wears now with black standing in for his traditional blue. They also showcased a number of new comic styled figures including their first ever Julia Carpenter Spider-Woman, Doppleganger, Hydroman, and The Scorpion (who will have a poseable bendy-wire tail)!
It wouldn’t really be the ‘Marvel Legends’ brand if there weren’t a bunch of retailer exclusives to look forward to, so of course Hasbro had these to announce in droves! There are a few Walgreens exclusives including ‘Infamous’ Ironman and Emma Frost (black costume), plus the Amazon exclusive 3-pack of classic comic book style Magneto, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch! Walmart will have a special figure 2-pack of Loki and Corvus Glaive from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, while Target will have special new 2-pack of Black costume Spider-Man with Kraven The Hunter, and a ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ themed 2-pack featuring Spider-Man in his yellow blazer along with our first ever figure of MJ!
As we got deeper into their announcements, Hasbro seemed to be having a more difficult time not showing off anything new from the MCU, with a few figures from previous films snuck into upcoming waves or as retailer exclusives. Then they pulled back the curtain to reveal another wave of figure 2-packs of characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans have been begging for to help fill in their collections! From ‘Thor: Ragnorok’ we have 2-packs of Hela (with two all new head sculpts) and Skurge, plus Korg with The Grandmaster! ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is giving us a 2-pack of upgraded Spider-Man and Ironman figures, with Spider-Man featuring his ‘Iron-Spider’ legs and Iron Man having all of the armor add ons seen in the film. From ‘Antman and The Wasp’ we are getting a figure of Ghost as well as fan favorite Luis! Finally, from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ we are getting our first ever figures of Steve Rogers (in his military outfit from his first real mission) and Peggy Carter, which is an Amazon exclusive.
Last but not least, Hasbro had a life-sized Antman helmet on display that features lights and sounds and is part of the large scale prop replicas line of ‘Marvel Legends’ products. This item looks to be as close to film accurate as people can hope to get at a decent price point, but if it’s anything even close to as good as the previous releases from this collection, it will end up being a ‘must have’ for ‘Antman’ fans!
