In an interview with the Parade Sunday supplement, Sigourney Weaver confirmed that she would be back for Jason Reitman’s upcoming ‘Ghostbusters 3’. She won’t be alone. Even though she didn’t name names, she did remark:
“It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!”
About the 1984 original film, she added:
“I knew it would be big. The script was so funny and full of heart. Ghostbusters changed my life.”
Weaver made a cameo appearance in the unrelated 2016 reboot directed by Paul Feig, as did original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, and Annie Potts. Harold Ramis passed away in 2014, and Rick Moranis tends to stay out of the spotlight, preferring voice-over work, since he semi-retired in 1997, following the death of his wife.

So it’s not clear which “guys” Weaver will share the screen with, but unlike in the 2016 ‘Ghostbusters’, the returning cast members will be reprising their original roles, although they won’t be the focus of the film. Weaver’s role in the originals was that of Dana Barrett, a cellist who becomes romantically involved with Murray’s Peter Venkman after her life becomes plagued with pesky poltergeists. Aykroyd portrayed Raymond Stantz, Hudson played Winston Zeddemore, and Potts portrayed receptionist Janine Melnitz.
Reitman’s sequel will star Carrie Coon as a single mother, with Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard as her kids. Rumor has it, the plot involves them moving to a small town, only to discover the paranormal secrets hidden within. It is RUMORED that Coon’s character will be the daughter of Ramis’ Egon Spengler, but that is strictly a rumor at this time.
Following ‘Ghostbusters’, Weaver went on to win two Golden Globes for ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ and ‘Working Girl’ (both in 1988), and a BAFTA Award for 1998’s ‘The Ice Storm’. She recently had the role of Alexandra Reid on Netflix’s ‘Defenders’, and is presently at work on the three ‘Avatar’ sequels.
‘Ghostbusters 3’ is due to be released on July 10, 2020.
