The leading cast of the new ‘Ghostbusters’ has been confirmed and there are no surprises. Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard will make up the family unit at the core of this movie. All three were previously rumored to have been in talks.

Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two ‘Ghostbusters’ movies, is helming this new film, which is a sequel, with the first two movies remaining in canon, but ignoring Paul Feig‘s poorly-received reboot. Reitman posted a composite picture on Twitter with the caption “Meet the family” with the hashtag #GB20.

While the original ‘Ghostbusters’ movies were very New York-centric, reportedly, the film focuses on a single mother and her two young teenagers who move to a small town, where they begin unearthing strange secrets.
Obviously, Coon will play the mother, with Grace and Wolfhard as the kids. In the original casting descriptions, it listed that the girl would be 13, while the boy would be 12, but obviously that has changed. Grace plays a 10-year-old in the upcoming ‘Annabelle Comes Home’, but she is currently 12. Wolfhard is 16.
Coon was last seen on the USA series ‘The Sinner’ and will star opposite Jude Law in ‘The Nest’. Grace can currently be seen as young Carol Danvers in ‘Captain Marvel’ and will star in ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ in June. Wolfhard will be back in ‘Stranger Things 3’ on July 4, and in ‘It: Chapter 2’ on September 6.
There is a *RUMOR* that Coon’s character will be the daughter of an original Ghostbuster, but that is strictly a *RUMOR*. If it turns out to be true, cool, but don’t stake your life on that.
EDITORIALIZING ALERT:
To be honest, if that is the case, then that would just about be the only thing really “Ghostbuster-y” about this new film. Granted, very little is known about it, but it’s set in a small town and follows a group of teens. The city of New York was practically a character in the first two films. It was the justification for Winston’s presence on the team. Taking the action out of the Big Apple and putting it in a rural setting, plus focusing on a bunch of teens? There is literally NOTHING ‘Ghostbusters’ about that. At best, it sounds like ‘It’ and ‘Stranger Things’– both of which star Wolfhard! At worst it sounds like ‘Goosebumps’ or ‘The House with a Clock in its Walls’ or hell, ‘Hocus Pocus’ or ‘Halloweentown’. It kind of blows my mind that people flipped the eff out over Feig’s all-female ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot, but are a-okay with slapping the name ‘Ghostbusters’ on something that sounds like a Disney or Nickelodeon project, simply because it bears the name “Reitman.” But I hope I’m wrong about that.
‘Ghostbusters’ is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 10, 2020, so expect production to begin soon. What do you think of these plans so far?
