Earlier this year Sony Pictures and Disney wouldn’t play ball and Tom Holland’s iteration of Spider-Man was being taken away from Marvel Studios. Thankfully, they were able to cut a deal, and Peter Parker is going to be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for at least two more movies. Now, execs from both the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group and Walt Disney Studios have confirmed that it was the outcry by fans which had the two companies make up so quickly. Of course, they also are insisting that it likely would have happened anyway given time.
According to Disney’s CCO Alan Horn:
“The fan base, which is important to all of us, seemed to really respond to what Tom and his folks have done before with our people. They like the fact that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Kevin Feige were involved [in the two Spider-Man films]. We heard feedback out there that suggested that joining forces once again was probably really a good idea.”
This statement seems to confirm when Disney’s Bob Iger previously stated it was Holland and the fans which helped bring this about.

Sony’s chairman Tom Rothman would go on to say that the media attention helped spur the two companies to make up but that it would have eventually happened through negotiations:
“This was a classic win-win-win. A win for Sony, a win for Disney, a win for the fans. The only thing I would say is that news cycles and the rhythm of negotiations do not necessarily overlap. And this is, in the words of Shakespeare, a consummation devoutly to be wished. We would have gotten there, and the news got ahead of some things.”
With how much Sony is still pushing for expanding the Spider-Man characters they own, that doesn’t seem like it could be entirely accurate, but I’ll take it! Tom Holland’s Spidey being able to continue swinging his way through the MCU is something that most fans can appreciate.
