Well, for anyone who had thought that perhaps we would see Matt, Danny or Luke appear on either Hulu or Disney+ now that their shows have been cancelled on Netflix, you may be out of luck.
It has recently been revealed that when Netflix and Marvel signed the original deal for the main 4 Marvel/ Netflix shows (‘Daredevil,’ ‘Jessica Jones,’ ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’) back in 2013, there was a clause in there that guaranteed that the characters could not be used in another television show or movie for TWO YEARS if Netflix cancelled the series. So, yeah. No Daredevil, Luke, or Iron Fist until 2020, and if ‘Jessica Jones’ does get cancelled immediately after her third season airs in 2019 as everyone suspects at this point, then that means she could not be used again until 2021.
Things are indeed getting grim for the survival of these Defenders, though to be fair, all hope it not yet lost. Disney/ Marvel might be playing the long game, and fans waiting until 2020/2021 might seem like a long time (and it is), but I believe they would still come back to these shows and characters, if given the chance and the right marketing of the situation. Not to mention, if they did have to wait all those years, the writers could really come up with an amazing plan to reintroduce all the characters, plan out a much better ‘Defenders’ Season 2, and give all of the characters and their perspective series’ a chance to finally do some catching up to the main MCU, which is literally YEARS ahead of the Marvel/ Netflix series due to the nature of how/when the movies are made and the more narrow timeline of the Netflix series.
What are your thoughts on the subject? Would you come back to these shows if you had to wait until 2020-2021? Do you think Disney/ Marvel would wait and retain the same cast and crew? Or would they wait and reboot everything once they were legally capable, figuring that by 2020 enough time had passed that people would have forgotten about the Netflix incarnations of these characters? Feel free to share your thoughts on the matter in the comments below!
