Jesse Eisenberg is back in the role of unlikely hero, as the brainy Columbus in ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’. He has also appeared recently in the indie films ‘Vivarium’, ‘The Art of Self Defense’ (both of which happen to co-star Imogen Poots), and ‘The Hummingbird Project’. While Eisenberg tends to favor lower-budget indies, he does occasionally pop up in higher-profile projects. Perhaps the highest-profile role for Eisenberg has been as comic book villain Lex Luthor in the DC cinematic universe.
Drawing heavily from Eisenberg’s own portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in ‘The Social Network’, director Zack Snyder concocted a youthful, wunderkind Luthor that sputtered with manic energy. This interpretation of the character was hated by fans, as were Snyder’s DC movies in general. Despite a post-credits cameo in ‘Justice League’ in which his Luthor proposed forming an evil “League” to stand up to the assembled heroes, Eisenberg has seemingly declared that he will not be back to the DC Universe.

This admission came during an interview alongside his ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ co-star Woody Harrelson, with ComicBook.com’s Josh Wilding. Like Eisenberg, Harrelson has also taken on the role of a comic book villain, in this case, Carnage. Harrelson’s Carnage– or rather his human form, Cletus Kassiday– appeared briefly in ‘Venom’, with plans to return in full symbiote mode in the sequel, due out next year.
When asked where their super villain forms would be seen next, Harrelson prepares to answer sincerely, regarding his role, before Eisenberg clarified:
“Different venues. I will say, quite confidently, different venues. His will be, like, kind of a movie that people go to and mine will be in my living room that people occasionally go to but mostly one at a time.”
I doubt this is disappointing to anyone. While there are still a few fans who are dying to see the “Snyder Cut” of ‘Justice League’, the majority of humanity has forgotten that the movie ever existed and moved on. And of all the rottenness of ‘Batman V Superman’, this take on Luthor was arguably the worst.
