Now that Sony and Disney/Marvel Studios/Kevin Feige have worked out their differences, its like Damage Control is moving in to clean up after a disaster. Now that the debris is being cleared away, more pieces of the ‘Spider-Man’ puzzle are falling into place and among them is Jon Watts, the director of ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Far From Home’, who is reported to be in final negotiations to return for a third installment.
Watts’ two ‘Spider-Man’ movies have made over $2 billion and ‘Far From Home’ made over $1 billion by itself, making it the highest-grossing ‘Spider-Man’ movie yet, and Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever, internationally. Obviously, the current team is a winning combination, and Sony should rightfully be whatever it can to keep it intact, at least for one more entry, to make this a cohesive trilogy.

At the time that it was announced that Disney and Kevin Feige would not be part of Team Spidey, Watts was not a lock to return, and reportedly Sony wanted to get that situation ironed out before signing Watts again. The director brought a youthful energy to his pictures, separating them from the heavier ‘Amazing’ movies, which were neither huge financial hits nor particularly well-liked by fans.
‘Homecoming’ laid the groundwork for a sequel, with Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) having deduced Spider-Man’s secret identity, and being sent to prison with that knowledge. There, he was confronted by Mac Gargan (Michael Mando) who wanted to know the secret. In the comics, Mac Gargan is the villain The Scorpion, so fans expected him to return and adopt his super identity in the sequel, which didn’t happen.
Then of course, ‘Far From Home’ ended on an even bigger cliffhanger, which kind of makes that dangling storyline moot.
There’s no reason to necessarily assume that there will only be one more ‘Spider-Man’ movie in this continuity. But at the very least, it will be nice to get that one just to give this a nice trilogy wrap-up. If there are more films after this, that’s just gravy, but fans really want some resolution before moving forward.
Sony has announced that the third ‘Spider-Man’ will be released on July 16, 2021, so expect production to kick off in early 2020.
