Sony Has Given Us A Second Trailer For ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’

The sequel to 2018’s Tom Hardy-ed ‘Venom,’ titled ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ is heading to theaters sometime later this year – Sony’s official press releases say “this Fall,’ but a precise date remains surprisingly unannounced. Nevertheless, the fine folks at the studio have graced us with a second trailer to view, following up on the first trailer released earlier this year. The first film grossed $856 million at the worldwide box office, making it’s profit estimated around $247 million and being one of the better financial successes of the 2018 theatrical releases. Of course, here in 2021 we find ourselves in a slightly different world in terms of theater-going and in-person entertainment, so it remains to be seen how this sequel will fare on the big screens – and this uncertainly could possibly be part of what is holding Sony back from announcing an official release date for the film. As the world slowly tries to get things back to normal(ish) in a post-pandemic landscape, a return to movie theaters is in sight, with many chains already having opened their doors in limited capacities in areas around the United States. Even though it might feel more further out, September is only 4 months away, and in that month, Sony will bring Marvel fans the second installment in the Venom film franchise, titled ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage.’ The name is an obvious direct acknowledgement of the fact that another villain from the Spider-Man realm, Carnage aka Cletus Kasady, will be making his cinematic debut. Portrayed in the new film by Woody Harrelson (as he technically reprises the role from the mid-credits scene of the first ‘Venom’ film), Carnage is not the only bad guy that anti-hero Venom/Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) will have to contend with; although shown sparingly in this trailer, we get our first look at Naomie Harris as fellow insane-asylum inmate Shriek. ‘Venom 2’ Gets A New Title– ‘Let There Be Carnage’– And A New Release Date

Sony has officially revealed that the sequel to ‘Venom’ will be named ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’, but has also announced that the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s surprise smash has been postponed from its June 25, 2021 release date, to October 1, 2021. The reason is exactly what you think it is– the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Although there is hope that the movie industry and all others will start to bounce back within the next few months, the month+ shutdown that we’ve already endured has forced a lot of movies to already be pushed back due to productions or post-production work having to cease as everyone was urged to quarantine at home. The movies ‘Tenent’ and ‘Mulan’ were rescheduled for late July of this year and there is still hope that they will open at that time, but the film industry has so many moving parts, from the studios to theaters, not to mention state-enforced shelter-in-place regulations that will impact those decisions. Producer Says They Have Thought Of Making ‘Venom 2’ Rated-R After The Success Of ‘Joker’

There had been talk that ‘Venom’ might have been rated R, but ultimately it arrived with a PG-13 rating. This was done to make the film more compatible with the existing superhero movies, including the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise, even though there was no direct connection between ‘Venom’ and ‘Spider-Man’ at that time. Now that Warner Brothers ‘Joker’ is a runaway success, having become the first R-rated movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office, ‘Venom’ producer Matt Tolmach says that ‘Venom 2’ might actually go a little darker into the same territory. ‘Venom 2’ Sinks Its Teeth Into ‘The Irishman’s Stephen Graham

Stephen Graham (‘The Irishman’, ‘Rocketman’) has reportedly joined the cast of ‘Venom 2’, which is being directed by Andy Serkis, and has already been partially filmed. Graham’s role has not been disclosed. The first ‘Venom’ was a surprise hit last fall, earning $855M worldwide, despite poor reviews. The sequel is due to hit theaters in the fall of 2020. Tom Hardy returns in the lead role of underground reporter Eddie Brock, with Michelle Williams as his former finacée Anne Weying. Woody Harrelson, who made an uncredited cameo in the first film as killer Cletus Kasady, will return and it is believed he will take on the form of symbiote Carnage. Naomie Harris is believed to have joined the cast as Frances Barrison, a.k.a. the sonic-powered sycophant Shriek. Graham won two SAG ensemble awards for the cast of HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’. ‘Venom 2’ May Have Found Its Shriek In Naomie Harris

It was a big week for bad girls. Zoë Kravitz was announced as the new Catwoman in Warner Brothers’ ‘The Batman’, and it was revealed that the sequel to ‘Venom’ would introduce Shriek. Now comes word that Sony is in talks for Naomie Harris to take on the role, as a sonic-powered supervillain that is in love with symbiote Carnage, who will be played by Woody Harrelson. Harris was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the movie ‘Moonlight’. (The film itself won Motion Picture of the Year and Best Adapted Screenplay, and Mahershala Ali won for Best Supporting Actor.) She may be better recognized for playing Eve Moneypenny in the current James Bond franchise, having appeared in ‘Skyfall’, ‘Spectre’, and the upcoming ‘No Time to Die’, or for playing Tia Dalma in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise. Woody Harrelson‘s Carnage will have company in ‘Venom 2’, as it has been reported by inside sources (via Deadline) that the Marvel villain Shriek is also in the script to the sequel. Introduced in 1993’s ‘Spider-Man Unlimited ‘Vol. 1 #1, Shriek (real name: Frances Louise Barrison) is a mutant with sonic powers who is typically depicted as Carnage’s lover. (Obviously, she’ll be given a different origin, as Disney now has the rights to “mutants” on lock.) One source revealed: “Right now the role is not filled, the net is cast wide toward many kinds of actresses. [The filmmakers are] looking mostly at unknowns right now.” Frances Barrison (who previously used the alias Sandra Deel) was a drug dealer, whose powers surfaced after an encounter with Cloak & Dagger. She has a “mother complex” due to suffering emotional abuse from her own matriarch. Jesse Eisenberg Basically Confirms He Will Not Play Lex Luthor Again

Jesse Eisenberg is back in the role of unlikely hero, as the brainy Columbus in ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’. He has also appeared recently in the indie films ‘Vivarium’, ‘The Art of Self Defense’ (both of which happen to co-star Imogen Poots), and ‘The Hummingbird Project’. While Eisenberg tends to favor lower-budget indies, he does occasionally pop up in higher-profile projects. Perhaps the highest-profile role for Eisenberg has been as comic book villain Lex Luthor in the DC cinematic universe. Drawing heavily from Eisenberg’s own portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in ‘The Social Network’, director Zack Snyder concocted a youthful, wunderkind Luthor that sputtered with manic energy. This interpretation of the character was hated by fans, as were Snyder’s DC movies in general. Despite a post-credits cameo in ‘Justice League’ in which his Luthor proposed forming an evil “League” to stand up to the assembled heroes, Eisenberg has seemingly declared that he will not be back to the DC Universe. Sony Appears To Be Revisiting The Idea Of A Big Screen ‘Sinister Six’

The ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ video release offers a tease of things to come. It sounds as though Sony is reviving the idea of putting the Sinister Six on the big screen. In one of the interviews on the disc’s bonus features, producer Amy Pascal teases: “All of these villains that we now have in our universe happen to be characters that are in the Sinister Six. There may be something that happens with that.” The Sinister Six has gone through multiple lineups, so almost all of Spider-Man’s major foes have been members at one time or another. The original roster, in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man Annual’ #1 (1964), consisted of Doctor Octopus (who assembled the team and acted as leader), Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, and the Vulture. So far, only the Vulture and Mysterio have appeared in the current cycle of movies, but Mysterio is dead, meaning that Vulture is the only one that could show up as a member. Even though Sony hasn’t made an official announcement, Michelle Williams says she will be back for ‘Venom 2’, which we now know is being directed by motion-capture ace Andy Serkis. While promoting her new movie, ‘After the Wedding’, she succinctly told Yahoo! “I’m in.” She further went on to express how anxious she was to work with Serkis. “I’m such a fan of Andy’s, and I’m so inspired by what he’s been able to accomplish. Andy Serkis Is Confirmed To Be Directing ‘Venom 2’

The man who played villain Ulysses Klaue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will now guide the exploits of another villain from Marvel Comics. Andy Serkis has officially signed on to direct Sony’s ‘Venom 2’, the follow-up to last year’s Ruben Fleischer-helmed surprise action hit. Serkis flew to Los Angeles the week of July 22 to meet with Sony brass about taking on the sequel. Serkis beat out a few directors for the job, including Travis Knight (‘Bumblebee’) and Rupert Wyatt (‘Captive State’). Serkis’ deal was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Interestingly, Wyatt directed Serkis in a motion-capture performance as Caesar in ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. ‘Venom 2′ will be Serkis’ third film directing job, after the 2017 drama ‘Breathe’ which coincidentally starred ex-Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield, along with Claire Foy, and last year’s ‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’ for Warner Bros. That film was intended to be released in theaters, but wound up going directly to Netflix.
