Can a ‘Deadpool’ movie work with a PG-13 rating? ‘Once Upon a Deadpool’ would seem to indicate not, but David Leitch seems to think so. Leitch directed ‘Deadpool 2’ which was toned down into ‘Once Upon a Deadpool’, which barely made a ripple at the box office last fall.
Speaking to Yahoo! Movies, the helmer said:
“It’s rated R so that’s not necessarily the [MCU] brand but he doesn’t necessarily need to be R and [Disney] don’t necessarily need to only make PG-13 movies. I think we’ll find a happy ground… There’s a lot of mystery still surrounding what they want to do with Deadpool in [Disney’s] Marvel world but I think, from discussions that I’ve heard, it’s all positive. I think that they’re just trying to figure a way in as Deadpool’s hard.”
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased that “mutants” were coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox. Technically, Deadpool is not a mutant, but he is firmly part of the ‘X-Men’ brand. Disney is still releasing movies under the 20th Century Fox banner, and it appears that they plan to do so moving forward. Obviously, there are plans to integrate the X-Men proper into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s been stated that that is a long way off– at least five years.

But unlike the main ‘X-Men’ movies, which have been up and down in terms of critical and financial success, the ‘Deadpool’ flicks have been more than successful. In fact, ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Deadpool 2’ are the two highest-grossing ‘X-Men’ movies. They’re also outliers, even though the ‘Dark Phoenix’ cast showed up in a cameo in ‘Deadpool 2’. But generally speaking, ‘Deadpool’ doesn’t seem to actually take place in the cinematic ‘X-Men’ universe, as it features a totally different Colossus.
There’s been talk that Disney won’t mess with this franchise and let it stand on its own, possibly even under the Fox banner. The downside would be that Deadpool won’t be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upside would be that Reynolds would stay in the role for at least one more movie, and it would be the same Deadpool that fans love.
