The first film grossed $856 million at the worldwide box office, making it’s profit estimated around $247 million and being one of the better financial successes of the 2018 theatrical releases.  Of course, here in 2021 we find ourselves in a slightly different world in terms of theater-going and in-person entertainment, so it remains to be seen how this sequel will fare on the big screens – and this uncertainly could possibly be part of what is holding Sony back from announcing an official release date for the film. Regardless, the movie itself seems ready to rock, and if the new trailer is any indication, Woody Harrelson is ready to wreak some havoc in the sub-titular role of Carnage, aka Cletus Kasady  Gone seems to be the curly-red wig Cletus donned in the credits scene of ‘Venom,’ […]

Behold The New Trailer For ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/05/10/behold-the-new-trailer-for-venom-let-there-be-carnage/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/05/10/behold-the-new-trailer-for-venom-let-there-be-carnage/#disqus_thread Mon, 10 May 2021 15:26:17 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355578 As the world slowly tries to get things back to normal(ish) in a post-pandemic landscape, a return to movie theaters is in sight, with many chains already having opened their doors in limited capacities in areas around the United States. Even though it might feel more further out, September is only 4 months away, and in that month, Sony will bring Marvel fans the second installment in the Venom film franchise, titled ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage.’  The name is an obvious direct acknowledgement of the fact that another villain from the Spider-Man realm, Carnage aka Cletus Kasady, will be making his cinematic debut. Portrayed in the new film by Woody Harrelson (as he technically reprises the role from the mid-credits scene of the first ‘Venom’ film), Carnage is not the only bad guy that anti-hero Venom/Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) will have to contend with; although shown sparingly in this trailer, we get our first look at Naomie Harris as fellow insane-asylum inmate Shriek.  In the Marvel Comics, Shriek is a mutant with the ability to manipulate sound; she debuted in comic pages in the 1990s around the same time as Carnage, and the two characters have often been portrayed […]

Benedict Cumberbatch Is Officially Bringing Doctor Strange To ‘Spider-Man 3’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/10/08/benedict-cumberbatch-is-officially-bringing-doctor-strange-to-spider-man-3/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/10/08/benedict-cumberbatch-is-officially-bringing-doctor-strange-to-spider-man-3/#disqus_thread Thu, 08 Oct 2020 20:46:16 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355261 Things just keep getting more interesting for the next film installment of everyone’s friendly neighborhood web-slinger. Hot on the heels of the recent news that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his franchise-jumping role of Electro in ‘Spider-Man 3,’ news has broken today that Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange in the film as well – and his appearance could potentially serve as an explanation of sorts for Electro’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Foxx’s Electro appeared once on-screen, in 2014’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’  This, of course, is not the direct sequel to the upcoming Spider-Man film, but rather the end of Sony’s failed attempt to bring Spidey back to the big screen with Andrew Garfield in the lead role.  Sony does still own the rights to Spider-Man and related characters, but they have struck a deal with Marvel to incorporate the hero, now portrayed on-screen by Tom Holland, into the MCU.  The deal was at risk of expiring late last year, but the two companies worked it out, and Marvel is now set to produce ‘Spider-Man 3,’ the first film in this trilogy which they will be so doing. So, that’s a long-winded way to say that Foxx’s […]

Tom Holland’s Next ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Has Been Delayed Again https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/24/tom-hollands-next-spider-man-movie-has-been-delayed-again/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/24/tom-hollands-next-spider-man-movie-has-been-delayed-again/#disqus_thread Fri, 24 Jul 2020 13:00:46 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354420 ‘Spider-Man 3’ has been postponed again.  It was originally scheduled for release on July 16, 2021, but was delayed until November 5, 2021.  It has now been pushed back to December 17, 2021.  This only pertains to its opening in the US, so it’s possible that Sony is taking into account that the COVID-19 situation is likely going to get better elsewhere before it does in the United States. Tom Holland is expected to film ‘Uncharted’, also for Sony, before ‘Spider-Man’.  ‘Uncharted’ is based on a video game series that spans the globe, and it was set to film in Spain and Germany.  The European Union is set to open back up to film and television projects, so production could begin soon.  Ruben Fleischer is directing this picture.  Holland plays adventurer Nathan Drake, with Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.  Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle co-star.  ‘Uncharted’ is currently scheduled to open on July 16, 2021. Though not much is known about Holland’s third ‘Spider-Man’, it was reportedly going to film in New York City Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Iceland (!).  (Atlanta, at least, is opening up for productions.)  Director Jon Watts is confirmed to be […]

Ghost-Spider or Spider-Gwen, would headline her own animated movie, co-starring the first Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew, and Silk, the heroic identity of Cindy Moon, two other characters from various Marvel Comics books.  This was in 2018, after ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ proved to be a hit at the box office.  But as far as Steinfeld is concerned, the picture doesn’t appear to be happening. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Steinfeld said: “Not that I know of, I am not in the know with these things…  It’s funny, because I feel like this is the time to figure it out.  But I do think, obviously, everything has kind of been slightly put on hold. So there hasn’t been much that I’ve heard lately.” Even without ‘Spider-Women’, Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy will be back in the direct sequel to ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ which is still in the works, although the coronavirus outbreak has pushed it from its April 2022 release date to October 7, 2022. ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ won the Academy Award for Best Animated […]

Marc Guggenheim To Pen Another ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off For Sony ‘Jackpot’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/05/27/marc-guggenheim-to-pen-another-spider-man-spin-off-for-sony-jackpot/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/05/27/marc-guggenheim-to-pen-another-spider-man-spin-off-for-sony-jackpot/#disqus_thread Wed, 27 May 2020 20:00:42 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=353527 Marc Guggenheim has been tapped by Sony to pen the script for a movie based on the Spider-Man supporting character Jackpot.  Or rather, supporting characters, as Jackpot is the identity of two different women– Sara Ehret (above) and Alana Jobson.  Perhaps appropriately, Guggenheim has written some of the comics that featured Jackpot, so if anyone will guarantee a faithful adaptation, it’s him. Guggenheim has superhero experience having served as writer and executive producer of ‘Arrow’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, and ‘Supergirl’.  On the big screen, he wrote ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ and co-wrote ‘Green Lantern’. This news arrives shortly after the announcement that S.J. Clarkson has been tapped to direct a Sony film starring another female character from the Spider-Verse, Madame Web.  Previously, Sony had a different female-fronted Spider-film in the works, ‘Silver & Black’ featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat, to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.  That project was canceled however, reportedly because Sony wanted the two characters to star in their own movies.  It’s a bit ironic that the studio now has two movies in the works starring characters other than those two. Two women have operated under the guise of Jackpot.  The first was Sara Ehret, a […]

S.J. Clarkson.  While it did not offer many details, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Clarkson’s attachment to a “female-focused” Marvel project for Sony.  It now seems that Collider has confirmed that this film is indeed ‘Madame Web’. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that a few years ago, Marvel wrote Cassandra Web out of the comics and had her pass her psychic abilities on to a younger character, Julia Carpenter.  Carpenter was the second Marvel character to go by the name Spider-Woman, and she has also operated under the codename Arachne.  Her original black and white costume subconsciously inspired Peter Parker’s similar suit, which turned out to be the symbiote Venom. Shortly after the announcement of Clarkson’s involvement arrived, it was also revealed that Marc Guggenheim has been tapped to write the screenplay for another female character from the Spider-Verse– Jackpot. Sony previously had […]

Billy Batson in ‘Shazam!’).  This ceremony was broadcast on Sunday, six weeks after a more lavish spectacle was supposed to have taken place. It should come as no surprise that kids love superheroes, and the champions of justice (not to be confused with Victoria) dominated.  ‘Avengers: Endgame’ won Favorite Movie.  ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ won the same prize last year.  Spider-Man, himself, Tom Holland swung away with Favorite Superhero, appropriately taking the baton from last year’s winner, his mentor Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Disney, who owns Marvel, dominated most of the other film categories, with Dove Cameron winning Favorite Movie Actress for the TV movie ‘Descendants 3’, ‘Frozen 2’ for Favorite Animated Movie, Beyoncé for Favorite Female Voice From an Animated Movie for ‘The Lion King’, and Josh Gad for Favorite Male Voice From an Animated Movie for ‘Frozen […]

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Cox reacted by saying: “I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it.  If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.” This should come as no surprise for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Marvel Studios and its president Kevin Feige seem content to pretend the Netflix Marvel shows never existed.  While they were envisioned as an extension to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they absolutely don’t fit with the family-friendly tone of the movies.  Add to that the fact that Marvel Studios broke away from parent company Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Television and was set up as its own entity under Disney.  Now Marvel TV has essentially been dissolved and Feige is in charge of all projects from the comics to screens and his vision for television is focused pretty much solely on the upcoming slate of […]

‘Uncharted’ Starring Tom Holland Actually Gets Moved Forward https://sciencefiction.com/2020/04/25/uncharted-starring-tom-holland-actually-gets-moved-forward/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/04/25/uncharted-starring-tom-holland-actually-gets-moved-forward/#disqus_thread Sat, 25 Apr 2020 19:09:50 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=353116 The constantly shifting Playstation video game adaptation ‘Uncharted’ has had its release date changed again, but in an unexpected twist, it has actually been pushed forward!  Instead of opening on October 8, 2021, it will now arrive on July 16.  (Prior to that, it had been pushed from March to October.)  But this news comes after Sony did some shuffling with its other movies, including the next ‘Spider-Man’ live-action movie, which was moved from July to November of next year.  Even with some areas experimenting with reopening after coronavirus shutdowns, it’s still unclear when Hollywood productions will begin again in earnest. A lot of this shuffling centers on Tom Holland who is starring in both ‘Uncharted’ and ‘Spider-Man’.  But even before the shutdown, he was set to film ‘Uncharted’ first, and filming actually ALMOST began before the shutdowns. As Holland stated in a comment on Instagram (via Comicbook.com): “We showed up for our first day of shooting and they shut us down. We were in Berlin.” In ‘Uncharted’, Holland will portray the video game’s lead character, Nathan Drake, albeit a younger version than fans have ever seen before.  Mark Wahlberg will portray his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.  (At one point, […]

In other Sony Spidey news, the animated sequel to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was also delayed.  It had been set to open on April 8, 2022, but will now bow on October 7, 2022. Sony also announced shifted release dates for ‘Fatherhood’ (a drama starring Kevin Hart), ‘The Nightingale’ (a WWII picture with Dakota and Elle Fanning), ‘Hotel Transylvania 4’, and ‘Man From Toronto’ (another Kevin Hart movie, also starring Matthew McConaughey). ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ made $1.132 billion at the box office when it […]

The movies ‘Tenent’ and ‘Mulan’ were rescheduled for late July of this year and there is still hope that they will open at that time, but the film industry has so many moving parts, from the studios to theaters, not to mention state-enforced shelter-in-place regulations that will impact those decisions. Motion-capture ace Andy Serkis helmed ‘Venom 2’, and stars Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams are returning.  Woody Harrelson, who made a surprise cameo during the post-credits scene of the first movie, will be back as the serial killer […]

Raimi has an affinity for Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme, having slipped an Easter Egg into ‘Spider-Man 2′, in which Ted Raimi’s character suggests “Doctor Strange” as a moniker for the newest villain on the scene, Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), which J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson dismisses saying that the name was already taken. While promoting his new Quibi series ’50 States of Frights’ with ComingSoon.com, he revealed that he was officially set to helm the new ‘Doctor Strange’, saying: “I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters.  He was so original, but […]

This follows Warner Brothers’ decision to move ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ from June 5 to August 14, but that just a matter of months.  Of course, there is still the chance that it still won’t make that release date, based on how this situation unfolds. Cineplexes are completely shut down throughout most of the United States and in most other major nations.  This past weekend, China attempted to reopen its theaters to disastrous results, resulting in them being shut down again.  Undeterred, Shanghai will attempt to reopen over 200 cinemas this weekend.  Considering that this COVID-19 situation is unprecedented, Hollywood is experimenting on ways to respond. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ was co-written (with Gil Kenan) and directed […]
