Sony Has Given Us A Second Trailer For ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’

The sequel to 2018’s Tom Hardy-ed ‘Venom,’ titled ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ is heading to theaters sometime later this year – Sony’s official press releases say “this Fall,’ but a precise date remains surprisingly unannounced. Nevertheless, the fine folks at the studio have graced us with a second trailer to view, following up on the first trailer released earlier this year. The first film grossed $856 million at the worldwide box office, making it’s profit estimated around $247 million and being one of the better financial successes of the 2018 theatrical releases. Of course, here in 2021 we find ourselves in a slightly different world in terms of theater-going and in-person entertainment, so it remains to be seen how this sequel will fare on the big screens – and this uncertainly could possibly be part of what is holding Sony back from announcing an official release date for the film. As the world slowly tries to get things back to normal(ish) in a post-pandemic landscape, a return to movie theaters is in sight, with many chains already having opened their doors in limited capacities in areas around the United States. Even though it might feel more further out, September is only 4 months away, and in that month, Sony will bring Marvel fans the second installment in the Venom film franchise, titled ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage.’ The name is an obvious direct acknowledgement of the fact that another villain from the Spider-Man realm, Carnage aka Cletus Kasady, will be making his cinematic debut. Portrayed in the new film by Woody Harrelson (as he technically reprises the role from the mid-credits scene of the first ‘Venom’ film), Carnage is not the only bad guy that anti-hero Venom/Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) will have to contend with; although shown sparingly in this trailer, we get our first look at Naomie Harris as fellow insane-asylum inmate Shriek. Benedict Cumberbatch Is Officially Bringing Doctor Strange To ‘Spider-Man 3’

Things just keep getting more interesting for the next film installment of everyone’s friendly neighborhood web-slinger. Hot on the heels of the recent news that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his franchise-jumping role of Electro in ‘Spider-Man 3,’ news has broken today that Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange in the film as well – and his appearance could potentially serve as an explanation of sorts for Electro’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Foxx’s Electro appeared once on-screen, in 2014’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ This, of course, is not the direct sequel to the upcoming Spider-Man film, but rather the end of Sony’s failed attempt to bring Spidey back to the big screen with Andrew Garfield in the lead role. Sony does still own the rights to Spider-Man and related characters, but they have struck a deal with Marvel to incorporate the hero, now portrayed on-screen by Tom Holland, into the MCU. Tom Holland’s Next ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Has Been Delayed Again

‘Spider-Man 3’ has been postponed again. It was originally scheduled for release on July 16, 2021, but was delayed until November 5, 2021. It has now been pushed back to December 17, 2021. This only pertains to its opening in the US, so it’s possible that Sony is taking into account that the COVID-19 situation is likely going to get better elsewhere before it does in the United States. Tom Holland is expected to film ‘Uncharted’, also for Sony, before ‘Spider-Man’. ‘Uncharted’ is based on a video game series that spans the globe, and it was set to film in Spain and Germany. The European Union is set to open back up to film and television projects, so production could begin soon. Ruben Fleischer is directing this picture. Holland plays adventurer Nathan Drake, with Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle co-star. ‘Uncharted’ is currently scheduled to open on July 16, 2021. ‘Spider-Women’: Hailee Steinfeld Says Her ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Spinoff Is Not In The Works

Well, bad news. Hailee Steinfeld’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ spinoff movie, ‘Spider-Women’ is not being worked on by Sony at this time. It was announced that her character, Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Ghost-Spider or Spider-Gwen, would headline her own animated movie, co-starring the first Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew, and Silk, the heroic identity of Cindy Moon, two other characters from various Marvel Comics books. This was in 2018, after ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ proved to be a hit at the box office. But as far as Steinfeld is concerned, the picture doesn’t appear to be happening. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Steinfeld said: “Not that I know of, I am not in the know with these things… It’s funny, because I feel like this is the time to figure it out. But I do think, obviously, everything has kind of been slightly put on hold. Marc Guggenheim To Pen Another ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off For Sony ‘Jackpot’

Marc Guggenheim has been tapped by Sony to pen the script for a movie based on the Spider-Man supporting character Jackpot. Or rather, supporting characters, as Jackpot is the identity of two different women– Sara Ehret (above) and Alana Jobson. Perhaps appropriately, Guggenheim has written some of the comics that featured Jackpot, so if anyone will guarantee a faithful adaptation, it’s him. Guggenheim has superhero experience having served as writer and executive producer of ‘Arrow’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, and ‘Supergirl’. On the big screen, he wrote ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ and co-wrote ‘Green Lantern’. This news arrives shortly after the announcement that S.J. Clarkson has been tapped to direct a Sony film starring another female character from the Spider-Verse, Madame Web. Previously, Sony had a different female-fronted Spider-film in the works, ‘Silver & Black’ featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat, to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. S.J. Clarkson Set To Direct ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off Movie ‘Madame Web’

Back in September, the almost unbelievable news emerged that Sony was developing a film about the Spider-Man supporting character ‘Madame Web’, who has classically been depicted as a blind, paraplegic, elderly woman, also known as Cassandra Webb. Now comes the announcement that not only is this movie really in the works, but now a director has been attached– S.J. Clarkson. While it did not offer many details, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Clarkson’s attachment to a “female-focused” Marvel project for Sony. It now seems that Collider has confirmed that this film is indeed ‘Madame Web’. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that a few years ago, Marvel wrote Cassandra Web out of the comics and had her pass her psychic abilities on to a younger character, Julia Carpenter. Carpenter was the second Marvel character to go by the name Spider-Woman, and she has also operated under the codename Arachne. Her original black and white costume subconsciously inspired Peter Parker’s similar suit, which turned out to be the symbiote Venom. Well, the coronavirus has shut down nearly every major pop culture event and that was the case with Nickelodeon’s 33rd annual ‘Kids Choice Awards’, subtitled “Celebrate Together.” But considering that kids don’t really watch regular television anyway, the decision was made to broadcast a “virtual telecast” hosted by Nick star Victoria Justice, with a live performance by Asher Angel (a.k.a. Billy Batson in ‘Shazam!’). This ceremony was broadcast on Sunday, six weeks after a more lavish spectacle was supposed to have taken place. It should come as no surprise that kids love superheroes, and the champions of justice (not to be confused with Victoria) dominated. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ won Favorite Movie. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ won the same prize last year. Spider-Man, himself, Tom Holland swung away with Favorite Superhero, appropriately taking the baton from last year’s winner, his mentor Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. There had been a few quiet rumblings that Daredevil might pop up in the next live-action ‘Spider-Man’ movie, but if that’s the case, Charlie Cox who played ol’ Hornhead on the Netflix series of the same name, doesn’t know anything about it. Speaking to Comicbook.com, Cox reacted by saying: “I hadn’t heard those rumors, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it. If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.” This should come as no surprise for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Marvel Studios and its president Kevin Feige seem content to pretend the Netflix Marvel shows never existed. While they were envisioned as an extension to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they absolutely don’t fit with the family-friendly tone of the movies. Add to that the fact that Marvel Studios broke away from parent company Marvel Entertainment and Marvel Television and was set up as its own entity under Disney. ‘Uncharted’ Starring Tom Holland Actually Gets Moved Forward

The constantly shifting Playstation video game adaptation ‘Uncharted’ has had its release date changed again, but in an unexpected twist, it has actually been pushed forward! Instead of opening on October 8, 2021, it will now arrive on July 16. (Prior to that, it had been pushed from March to October.) But this news comes after Sony did some shuffling with its other movies, including the next ‘Spider-Man’ live-action movie, which was moved from July to November of next year. Even with some areas experimenting with reopening after coronavirus shutdowns, it’s still unclear when Hollywood productions will begin again in earnest. A lot of this shuffling centers on Tom Holland who is starring in both ‘Uncharted’ and ‘Spider-Man’. But even before the shutdown, he was set to film ‘Uncharted’ first, and filming actually ALMOST began before the shutdowns. Sony Postpones The Next Tom Holland ‘Spider-Man’ Movie And The Sequel To ‘Into The Spider-Verse’

Well, unfortunately, this should come as no surprise. The next ‘Spider-Man’ movie has been delayed due to the current Hollywood shut-down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Star Tom Holland was expected to film the video game adaptation ‘Uncharted’ to be followed by this next ‘Spider-Man’, but as it stands right now, he’s not about to start shooting anything. The third film in this cycle was scheduled to open on July 16, 2021, but is now expected on November 5, 2021. That’s not a massive postponement. In fact, it’s actually somewhat optimistic as there is currently no end in sight for the stay-at-home orders in a lot of states, despite rumblings (and protests) to the contrary. In other Sony Spidey news, the animated sequel to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ was also delayed. It had been set to open on April 8, 2022, but will now bow on October 7, 2022. Sony has officially revealed that the sequel to ‘Venom’ will be named ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’, but has also announced that the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s surprise smash has been postponed from its June 25, 2021 release date, to October 1, 2021. The reason is exactly what you think it is– the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Although there is hope that the movie industry and all others will start to bounce back within the next few months, the month+ shutdown that we’ve already endured has forced a lot of movies to already be pushed back due to productions or post-production work having to cease as everyone was urged to quarantine at home. The movies ‘Tenent’ and ‘Mulan’ were rescheduled for late July of this year and there is still hope that they will open at that time, but the film industry has so many moving parts, from the studios to theaters, not to mention state-enforced shelter-in-place regulations that will impact those decisions. Sam Raimi Confirms He Is Directing ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’

It was first revealed in February that Sam Raimi was in talks to direct ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ and the director has confirmed that he has officially signed on. Raimi previously helped kick-off the modern superhero film stampede by helming ‘Spider-Man’ (2002), ‘Spider-Man 2’ (2004), and ‘Spider-Man 3’ (2007). He planned to direct a fourth film with Tobey Maguire, but that was scuttled when Sony decided to reboot the franchise with director Marc Webb and with Andrew Garfield assuming the role of Peter Parker. Sony Pushes ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ And ‘Morbius’ To Next Year Due To Coronavirus Shut-Down

Sony has officially postponed a bunch of its upcoming major releases and reschedule them for next year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps most prominently, ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ has been shifted from July 10, 2020, to March 5, 2021. In addition, ‘Morbius’ has been moved from July 30, 2020, to March 19, 2021. As a result of these adjustments, on top of the overall shutdown in Hollywood, Sony has also pushed the release of ‘Uncharted’ (which hasn’t been filmed) from March 5, 2021, to October 8, 2021. This follows Warner Brothers’ decision to move ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ from June 5 to August 14, but that just a matter of months. Of course, there is still the chance that it still won’t make that release date, based on how this situation unfolds. Cineplexes are completely shut down throughout most of the United States and in most other major nations. This past weekend, China attempted to reopen its theaters to disastrous results, resulting in them being shut down again. Undeterred, Shanghai will attempt to reopen over 200 cinemas this weekend.
