While ‘The Amazing Spider-Man‘ is dead and gone in a world where Tom Holland is now playing the web-slinger with Marvel Studios, rumors about Andrew Garfield parting ways with Sony are still swirling. From the films being canceled to Garfield being fired due to snubbing a Sony Exec, no one has really known what happened and now the actor has slightly weighed in on it without directly confirming the rumor.
What we know from the Sony hacks is that Sony Chief Kaz Hirai had originally been planning to announce ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’ in Rio de Janeiro at a huge Sony gala at the end of the World Cup though when Garfield didn’t appear at the event, things quickly went south.
Did Garfield skip the event in hopes of being fired?
“No, I don’t think so.”
While he didn’t elaborate on if that was the cause but it did sound as if there were some creative differences involved:
“What I’ll proudly say is that I didn’t compromise who I was, I was only ever myself. And that might have been difficult for some people.”
This sounds to be quite true from the very first film:
“I’d been reading the mythologists Joseph Campbell and James Hillman. And when I took on Spider-Man, I thought, ‘Holy shit! This is exquisite and terrifying and incredible. I have been given the responsibility of reaching my hand out from the big screen and putting it on [young boys’] shoulders. That is a gift for me and a big burden to carry. And I’m so up for it.’ I thought, if I can infuse all this ancient knowledge and wisdom into [Spider-Man], it could be profoundly affecting for young people in the audience. That was always my intention and what I tried to do. I was 25 and I was naive – not because of that, but because I was naive to the whole process of making one of those big-budget films.”
Sadly, his vision didn’t come to life as it did look as if he could have pulled off the part. In fact, he has recently also stated that “with The Amazing Spider-Man stuff I didn’t feel like that was my work up there, in a weird way. It felt like a semblance of it or kind of a shade of it, but ultimately I felt it was enshrouded in that filter” which really makes it look like what he wanted to do as Parker just never made it into the movies. That being said, I’d rather have Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe any day of the week so am still okay with this switch having occurred.
