After J.J. Abrams and company brought an excellent behind the scenes reel rather than some new scenes from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, many had hoped that Lucasfilm would unveil some never before seen footage at the D23 Expo, the convention for all things Disney. However, we’ve just received word that nothing of the sort would be making its way from a galaxy far, far away.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the ‘Episode VII’ director revealed that there are no plans of bringing any new clips to D23. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for that. Although, Abrams and company are still excited to meet the fans coming to Anaheim from far and wide:
“It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise. In the fall, there’ll be a trailer… We’re thrilled to go to D23 and meet the fans, but it’s a tricky thing to try and rush [footage] for a convention or preexisting event that would, of course, be fun to show something at.”
Well, that’s a huge bummer. Abrams makes a good point about rushing something that out for a con, but it’s a bummer nonetheless. The good news though is that the Lucasfilm crew could have something else up their sleeve. After all, these are the same people that sprung a surprise concert on everyone in Hall H at SDCC.
There’s also the possibility that whatever announcements they have in store for D23 aren’t related to ‘The Force Awakens’ at all. In addition to the first chapter of the new trilogy coming later this year, filmmakers are hard at work on the Star Wars Anthology films like ‘Rogue One’ and the untitled Han Solo spinoff. It’s possible that we could get some sneak peeks at these projects or even some casting announcements. You really never know what sort of surprises awaits you at a convention panel, especially one involving ‘Star Wars’.
