As expected, Todd Phillips‘ ‘Joker’ is laughing its way into awards season, with the first major announcements arriving in the form of the Golden Globes. ‘Joker’ is up for four major awards, including the biggie, Best Motion Picture, Drama. Phillips is also nominated for Best Director, and his leading man, Joaquin Phoenix is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama. Hildur Guðnadóttir is nominated for Best Score.
In the Best Motion Picture, Drama category, ‘Joker’ is up against Sam Mendes’ war picture ‘1917’, which doesn’t open until December 25; Martin Scorsese’s divisive Netflix crime drama ‘The Irishman’; another Netflix exclusive, ‘Marriage Story’, which stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson’; and ‘The Two Popes’, another Netflix pic, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, and opens on December 20. Overall, ‘Marriage Story’ got the most nominations in the Film categories, with six.

In the Director category, Phillips is battling against Mendes for ‘1917’, and Scorsese for ‘The Irishman’, along with Bong Joon Ho for ‘Parasite’, and Quentin Tarantino for ‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’.
Phoenix is competing against former Batman Christian Bale for ‘Ford v Ferrari’, Antonio Banderas for ‘Pain and Glory’, Adam Driver for ‘Marriage Story’, and Jonathan Pryce for ‘The Two Popes’ in the Best Actor, Drama category.
For Best Original Score, Motion Picture, ‘Joker’s Guðnadóttir is competing with Alexandre Desplat (‘Little Women’), Randy Newman (‘Marriage Story’), Thomas Newman (‘1917’), and Daniel Pemberton (‘Motherless Brooklyn’).
In an interesting turn of events, thanks to ‘The Irishman’, ‘Marriage Story’, and ‘The Two Popes’, Netflix has scored more nominations than any other single studio, which will surely upset those that still don’t consider streaming films to be on the same level as theatrical releases.
The Golden Globe Awards are nominated and voted on by the mysterious Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This awards show is often viewed as a preview of which films will score nominations at the Academy Awards, although the winners do not usually line up.
The 77th Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on January 5, 2020, from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Ricky Gervais will host.
