Believe it or not, we are now only 1 year away from the release of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ the wall-crawling hero’s first solo outing in the MCU, and the first ‘Spider-Man’ film we will see with Marvel Studios in complete control of their flagship hero. It has been a long journey for Spidey, and fans are well aware of the high expectations the studio has for this film, especially following the middling results Sony got from ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ Fortunately for Marvel, they know the character well and have some insight into what makes him work best on screen, already diverting from previous incarnations by casting exceptionally young in order to keep Spider-Man a teenager in high-school (both Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the hero had Spider-Man in high-school for some portions of the narrative, but neither actor really looked young enough to be there).
Aside from the age difference, Marvel also turned to the Spider-Man comic for the look of the costume, eschewing the fancy raised webbing of both previous versions and going with a simple red and blue costume with black webbing sewn in just like what is in the comics. And making Spider-Man younger also means at this point in time that he is a millennial, which is a very different take on the character, but one that could definitely work. In ‘Captain America: Civil War’ we have already seen how tech savvy Peter Parker is (and I’m guess that Tony Stark will still be around to mentor him in the new movie), and he definitely has an easy wit in costume that neither previous actor managed to achieve. With that in mind, check out the selfie taken by the man behind the mask himself, Tom Holland, while on set recently, promoting the 1 year marker while in costume. Based on the angle it looks like Holland is wired up and suspended high above the crew below, making this a great Spider-Man esque selfie, as it is very in-character for the wall-crawler.
