But what a difference 20 years makes, as TV is now turning out projects that blow away theatrical films in terms of emotional weight and jaw-dropping shockers.  TV of the 2000s and 20-teens has hosted such winners as ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘The West Wing’, ‘Downton Abbey’, and sooooo many more.  Nowadays, streaming is king, delivering newer buzzy hits like ‘Fleabag’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and ‘Orange is the New Black’. But what are the absolute BEST shows of the 21st century?  The UK’s Digital Spy asked readers that very question.  In honor of their first digital issue, available through Amazon News+, the publication took a poll, and the results…? Well, for starters, none of the shows I mentioned are on the list. Hoist your chalice!  ‘Game of Thrones’ has “officially” […]

Take George R.R. Martin, for example. Martin took to his blog to assure fans that he is doing well and has been “spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day.” “For those of you who may be concerned for me personally… yes, I am aware that I am very much in the most vulnerable population, given my age and physical condition.   But I feel fine at the moment, and we are taking all sensible precautions.  I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff, and I’m not going in to town or seeing anyone.   Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day.   Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.” Martin’s last book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel series was “A Dance With Dragons” published back in 2011 – 9 years ago! While fans have been clamoring for the author to finish writing “The Winds of […]

George R.R. Martin has recently claimed that he is  FINALLY finishing the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series of novels, concluding the book series that birthed ‘Game of Thrones,’ and finally giving fans of the novels some closure on a great number of storylines and characters that were not featured on the HBO show. Not only that, but Martin may be tweaking how it all ends for the characters we do know and love now that he has seen the reaction to the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale. According Martin himself in a recent interview with the German newspaper Welt: “People know an ending — but not the ending.” Of course, this could just mean some slight adjustments and further explanations for how it all ends, as showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were clearly following some kind of blueprint from Martin, and I highly doubt the novels will not include Daenerys turning tyrannical and, well, evil in the end, especially […]

Now, “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R. R. Martin has confirmed that this was the case. It sounds like showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wanted to take Westeros to the big screen and HBO was opposed to the idea. According to Martin: “At the moment it is not my place to decide because the movie rights for Game of Thrones belong to HBO. Besides from that, we actually considered this option: David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the makers behind the TV show, wanted to finish the saga with three big movies after Season 7. Game of Thrones was supposed to end in cinema. It was seriously discussed four to five years ago.” While the idea is something that the showrunners were completely behind doing, it appears that HBO wasn’t: “The executives said: We produce TV shows, we are not in the cinema business. And if HBO does make a movie, like the movie based on Deadwood, they only produce it to show it on tv – not on the […]

In fact, Peter Dinklage shares this could be one of the main reasons people have had such a problem with the series finale. We know that “all good things must come to an end,” but not everyone agrees that the final season was good. Even as someone who loved where all the characters ended up, I wasn’t one of the viewers who were at all thrilled about the pacing of our final outing in Westeros. Dinklage brought this up when he was asked by The New Yorker if he had been following the fan response to the series: “No. Well, everybody’s always going to have an opinion, and that means an ownership. It’s like breaking up with somebody. They get upset. I can’t speak for everybody, but my feeling is they didn’t want it to end, so a lot of people got angry. I feel like what [the showrunners] Dave [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] did was extraordinary. This happens. Monsters are created. And you don’t see it coming. We vote them into office. You look the other […]

Most fans couldn’t get enough of the show and with what felt like a rushed final season, that left many questions. So many questions! While we’ll have to wait another couple of lifetimes for George R.R. Martin‘s masterpiece to be released in novel form (and hopefully include a more satisfying conclusion than the series), we can at least get some insight as to what the characters were thinking during those final episodes thanks to a making-of documentary for the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale titled “Duty is the Death of Love”   RELATED: Wonder What Was Up With Drogon In The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Finale? The Commentary Track Has The Answer!   Now some of the biggest questions fans have been experiencing are getting answered. One of those is how exactly Jon Snow ended up taking the life of Daenerys and what was going through his mind when it happened. According to Kit Harington who played Snow for 8 seasons: “He doesn’t know he’s going to betray her until right at the end. In Jon’s head, it’s a number […]

Clarke, who starred as Daenerys Targaryen (aka The Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains) on the HBO fantasy series, disclosed on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast that since her breakout role in ‘Game of Thrones,’ she has become “a lot more savvy about what I’m comfortable with, and what I am OK with doing,” in terms of onscreen nudity.  The Primetime Emmy Award nominated actress recollects having arguments on the sets of other projects where the fights would start with her saying, “‘No, the sheet stays up” and they would counter at her with, ‘You don’t want to disappoint your ‘Game of Thrones’ fans.’  As a no-name actress “fresh from drama school” when she was cast,  Clarke also thought back to being asked to do several nude scenes right away during her first season of ‘Game of Thrones.’ “Season 1 was what it was,” she says. “It was a f–k ton of nudity… it […]

Now, thanks to Variety, there is more news about the kind of film they had been looking to make for ‘Star Wars,’ which is sure to make a large group of those fans even happier that the films are not moving forward. According to the Variety story, the trilogy of movies that Benioff and Weiss were developing would: “… exist apart from the Skywalker family saga,” and focus on “exploring….how the Jedi came to exist.” The last time ‘Star Wars’ tried to “explore” any part of their mythology was when George Lucas tried to explain the nature of the Force in the prequels with the midi-chlorians, and fans have still not gotten over complaining about that. And in this situation, since rumors had been flying that Weiss and Benioff would be doing movies set in the days of the “Old Republic” and fans were hoping for something similar to what […]

While starring in ‘Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker’ is probably a consolation prize, it would have been a stable paycheck and likely beneficial to the actress’s ongoing career to be associated with the most popular show to ever grace the small screen. Ackie was asked about the cancellation but before she did, she gave HBO a thumbs down and blew a raspberry before stating: “Can you put that in [the article]? It’s an industry in which things happen, things get put down, I’m just really excited about what is out there for me now. That was a great project, it didn’t work out. I’m ready to look for more stuff. [I’m] taking it in my stride. This industry will throw you about left, right and center, so you’ve got to take it in your stride!” Ackie wasn’t the only one who was let down by this prequel being canned as creator George R.R. Martin previously shared: “It goes without saying that I was saddened to hear the show would not be going to […]

Weiss have recently made an appearance at the Austin Film Festival and spoke about the series and their thoughts on how everything went down. The conversation seems to have unsettled a good number of fans, especially when they heard statements from the duo saying things like adaptions always ending up being a kind of “divorce” from the source material and claiming theirs was “amicable” because they got ahead of George R.R. Martin and his books. Also infuriating to a lot of fans was the information that Weiss and Benioff actively worked to remove “fantasy elements” from ‘Game of Thrones’ to make it easier for average viewers and fans to enjoy the show, further explaining some of the changes made from the books.   RELATED:  Dan Weiss On Why He And David Benioff Directed The Series Finale Of ‘Game Of Thrones’   On the production side, the duo also made a few people uneasy by revealing that they used an actual infant during the scene early in the show run where one of Craster’s babies […]

Martin, which had Naomi Watts attached to star.  But, perhaps the reason why HBO chose not to proceed is that they had instead decided to pick up another prequel, ‘House of the Dragon’, which focuses on the Targaryen clan.  The network placed a ten-episode first-season order. ‘House of the Dragon’ was co-created by Martin and Ryan J. Condal (‘Colony’), based on a rejected spin-off proposal from ‘GoT’ producer Bryan Cogman.  (He has since moved over to Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series.)  Martin’s book ‘Fire & Blood’ serves as the blueprint.  ‘GoT’ vet Miguel Sapochnik will direct the pilot episode.  Sapochnik won an Emmy for helming the episode “Battle of the Bastards.” This series will be set 300 years before ‘Game of Thrones’, and will chronicle “the beginning of the end for House Targaryen.”   RELATED:  A Targaryen Tale: George R.R. Martin.  Goldman would have served as showrunner, had the series progressed.  Naomi Watts was cast in the lead.  The cast also included Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Miranda Richardson, Josh Whitehouse, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goldman emailed the cast to inform them of HBO’s decision.  Apparently, this all happened weeks ago, but the news is just now being reported. Martin has previously divulged that there were five “successor series” based on ‘Game of Thrones’ in development, but that this one, which he referred to unofficially as ‘The Long Night’, was the furthest along.  The pilot, directed by S.J. Clarkson, was filmed this past summer in Northern Ireland.   RELATED: George R.R. Those still weighed down with thoughts about the finale include the director of the final two episodes, Neil Marshall (who is also the creator of ‘Hellboy’), and the man who started it all, George R.R. Martin. During an exclusive chat with Metro recently, Marshall spoke on his time directing on ‘Game of Thrones,’ especially after his initial hits ‘Blackwater‘ and ‘The Watchers on the Wall,‘ and some of his thoughts on what went wrong with the finale. He starts by speaking of his earlier episodes, saying: “Inevitably, I would’ve taken a different approach to directing. One of the greatest experiences I had with working on both those episodes was that they were so open to bringing my ideas, particularly about battle scenes and how battles worked.” He goes on to quietly put some of the blame on series producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, claiming they put a […]
