We’re the one weekly column right here on ScienceFiction.com where we seek out all of the awesome news you need to know about any announcements and cool happenings in the toy industry and put them all in one easy to find place for you!
August has officially reached its end, and with that, summer comes to a close. We hope you’ve all had productive summers filled with toy hunting! In the meantime, we are getting ready for the fall with plenty of great new announcements from some of our favorite companies including Diamond Select Toys, DC Collectibles, Hasbro, Quantum Mechanix, and more! There’s plenty to marvel at in the Toy News for the week of August 27th, 2019!
Legends From The Great White North
Hasbro had some real surprises in store for collectors at Fan Expo Canada this past weekend with the reveal of some all new comic book styled 6″ scale Marvel Legends figures! Quite appropriately, the biggest announcement out of the gate was an all new box set featuring the majority of Canada’s premiere superhero team, Alpha Flight! This six figure box set includes five brand new figures with Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird, Vindicator, and Shaman, plus a reissue of Hasbro’s previously release Puck (who was a build-a-figure several years back). As the rest of the Alpha Flight team was released individually within the last two years (with Guardian in the recent Wendigo wave and Sasquatch as a build-a-figure last year), this news is fantastic for fans of these heroes from the North! This six-pack box set is expected to release this fall for just $109.99, which is a steal when you factor in just how many figures you’ll get!
In addition to this large box set, Hasbro also announced a new Stealth Suit Invincible Iron Man figure! This figure is set to include a sword, blast effects, and several alternative hands. Stealth Suit Invincible Iron Man is set to hit the market this fall as well, but does not appear to be part of any larger overall wave of figures.
Put On A Happy Face
Harley is back! Our friends over at Quantum Mechanix have announced a new line of mini-statues dubbed the ‘Q-Fig Remastered’ series! This new line brings collectors new takes on some of QMX’s classic Q-Fig designs that have long since disappeared from the market. The main goal is to breathe new life into these sold out fan favorites with all new sculpts that gives fans old and new a chance to add these figures to their collections! The first figure in the ‘Q-Figs Remastered’ series is set to be the crown queen of crime herself, Harley Quinn! This new Harley Quinn mini-statue is an all new sculpt inspired by the previous Harley Quinn Q-Fig release, bringing a ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ style to the sculpt and adding in an all new diorama display base!
Much like with previous Q-Fig releases, the new Q-Fig Remastered Harley Quinn will stand approximately 3″ tall. Quantum Mechanix has given an estimated release window of Q1 2020 for this figure’s release at a price point of just $49.99! Check out the full release info below!
Harley Quinn Q-Fig Remastered
The Q-Fig Remastered series re-imagines classic, long sold-out Q-Figs and updates them to reflect QMx’s current style and advanced design techniques. It’s your opportunity to collect a Q-Fig you may have missed, or add a remastered version to display alongside your original Q-Fig. The Q-Fig Remastered series allows us to revisit fan favorites while bringing new dimensions to the original design.
This Q-Fig Remastered diorama features the Joker’s #1 gal, Harley Quinn, as she appeared in Batman: The Animated Series. She’s out to cause more than a little mayhem with her oversized mallet and her pet hyenas cackling at her side. Harley stands with a match in hand, ready to ignite the dynamite placed around the display base. Harley calls this one “Animals Attack People I Hate”. It’s a comedy.
Harley Quinn Q-Fig Remastered diorama is part of our Q-Fig Max and as such uses EverStone™, a proprietary high-temperature polymer developed by QMx. “Listen… Do You Smell Something?”
As of this week, Hasbro is officially “who you’re gonna call” for all the newest ‘Ghostbusters’ toys and collectibles! Hasbro recently announced via THR that they have acquired the Master Toy License for the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise! According to plans, the first Hasbro ‘Ghostbusters’ products are expected to hit the market in early 2020. Hasbro has not announced which film their first ‘Ghostbusters’ products will be based on, but it’s worth noting that the newest film in the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise, which is a sequel to the original two films rather than ‘Ghostbusters: Answer The Call’ from 2016, is set to hit theaters next July, so that may be the perfect gateway to the brand. It’s also worth noting that as the Master Toy License holder, Hasbro will have the ability to produce toys and collectibles based any iteration of the ‘Ghostbusters’ they choose, so the door is wide open and full of possibilities!
There is currently no word on how this new Master Toy License deal will effect other toy companies already producing product now like Diamond Select Toys, Funko, or The Loyal Subjects. Hopefully we will see some updates, or perhaps some final ‘Ghostbusters’ releases, from these companies soon. Hasbro, in the meanwhile, had already started teasing this acquisition earlier this summer with several ‘Transformers’/’Ghostbusters’ crossover collectibles. Only time will tell unfortunately.

New NECA NYCC News
We had already seen a sneak preview of this set a few weeks back, and have been waiting with bated breaths for NECA to make the full announcement. Well the day is finally here! This week NECA have finally made the official reveal of their final DC Vs. Dark horse Comics 2-Pack with Green Lantern Vs. Predator! Green Lantern includes parts to make both Hal Jordan and John Stewart, plus plenty of Energy Effects. Meanwhile the Predator is decked out in full Yellow Lantern Sienstro Corps gear and features both masked and unmasked heads, as well as it’s own set of Energy Effects. Green Lantern (Classic) – 7” Scale Action Figures – Green Lantern and “Sinestro Corps” Predator 2-Pack
This action figure 2-pack is inspired by a classic comic book mash-up! In a 2008 story arc of the #GreenLantern comic book, the already fearsome Yautja join the Sinestro Corps to attack the Earth, armed now with power rings.
The set includes two brand new, 7” scale comic book based figures, both with over 30 points of articulation. Dungeons, Dragons, Eagles, Doors; The Works!
Funko is well known for crafting wonderful collectibles for every imaginable license under the sun, but some of the coolest pieces we’ve ever seen (or at least some of our personal favorites) often end up being from the realm of high-fantasy. This week Funko has announced a number of new items from a variety of different high-fantasy franchises that you’re surely going to love! Kicking off their new ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ line of POP! Vinyls, Funko has announced Asmodeus, Mind Flayer, and Minsc & Boo! These are hopefully the first of many D&D POP! Vinyls to come! Meanwhile over at the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ camp, Funko has announced a new POP! Ride of Gandalf The Grey atop his majestic Eagle companion Gwaihir the Windlord! Finally, from ‘Game Of Thrones’, we have a new POP! Moment of Hodor’s infamously tragic ‘Hold The Door’ scene, plus a new Box Lunch exclusive POP! Vinyl of Ser Brienne of Tarth in her full golden armor from the series finale! These are all expected to hit stores this fall.
WHAT YEAR IS IT?!
While we are usually expecting Funko to bring us the coolest new collectibles from the latest things in popular culture, they often find themselves delving back into the past to bring fans collectibles based on licenses that have long since become the equivalent of ancient pop culture history. This week Funko has quite a few classic franchises joining their POP! Vinyls line, with new figures based on four fan favorite films from the late 90’s and early 00’s!
First up we’ve got some new POP! Vinyls from ‘Jumanji’! It looks like for now we are only getting Alan Parish and a Barnes And Noble exclusive Knife Wielding variant of Alan Parish. Hopefully we get some more ‘Jumanji’ POP! Vinyls further down the line! Next we have a similar situation with a POP! Vinyl of The Creeper from the terrifying horror film ‘Jeepers Creepers’! The Creeper will be widely available, while his hat-less open-faced variant will be available exclusively at FYE. Moving right along we have some long awaited POP! Vinyls based on the academy award winning film ‘Gladiator’! Fans can look forward to Maximus and Commodus hitting retailers everywhere this fall, while Armored Maximus will be available exclusively at FYE and Helmeted Maximus will be found exclusively in The Funko Shop!
Last, but far from least, we have a wave of POP! Vinyls based on the classic 90’s western ‘Tombstone’! This wave is made up of Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp, and Virgil Earp, plus several versions of Doc Holiday! We have the common Doc Holiday, plus the Target exclusive Doc Holiday (With Cup), and the Walmart exclusive ‘Standoff’Doc Holiday! These are all heading to stores this fall!
