Details of the story are being kept mostly under wraps, but Marvel does tell us that both the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom will try (and apparently fail to some degree) to contain the Darkhold from wreaking it’s magical destruction across the Marvel Universe.  The company was kind enough to share the covers to two of the upcoming special issues, Darkhold: Iron Man #1 and Darkhold: Blade #1, as well […]

Super Saturday: ‘The Marvel Super Heroes’ (1966) – The FIRST Marvel Cartoon Ever! https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/08/super-saturday-the-marvel-super-heroes-1966-the-first-marvel-cartoon-ever/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/08/super-saturday-the-marvel-super-heroes-1966-the-first-marvel-cartoon-ever/#disqus_thread Sat, 08 Feb 2020 15:00:09 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=346724 Generally speaking, my main focus of Super Saturday is on shows that actually aired on Saturday mornings, but as I plan to cover more Marvel shows, I figured I should start from the very beginning, and it just so happens that the first Marvel cartoon aired on weekday afternoons.  (Actually, I have already covered on Marvel series, ‘Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends’.) Many fans have fond recollections of various Marvel Superhero cartoons from when they were growing up– ‘X-Men’, ‘Spider-Man’, even ‘The Silver Surfer’ has his own series for a while.  But the first excursion of Marvel champions into animation was a truly bizarre footnote. In 1966, Grantray-Lawrence Animation delivered the syndicated package ‘The Marvel Super Heroes’, which aired on weekday afternoons in select cities.  However to call these cartoons “animated” is using the term at its loosest.  The art was xeroxed directly from comic books, just as the scripts were lifted from the word bubbles.  The resulting episodes featured a slap-dash of pencils by the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Don Heck among others.  And while the characters mouths moved and their eyes blinked, there was very little movement otherwise.  An arm here.  A leg there.  Generally, […]

Mr. Peanut Died Because Of… Iron Man?! https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/24/mr-peanut-died-because-of-iron-man/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/24/mr-peanut-died-because-of-iron-man/#disqus_thread Fri, 24 Jan 2020 21:14:53 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=349449 Recently, Planters killed off their iconic 104-year-old iconic Mr. Peanut. This rather brilliant marketing tactic was devised by VaynerMedia who does the company’s marketing and was inspired by the death of Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, the death of Iron Man in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ is precisely why Mr. Peanut is no longer among the land of the living. This new detail came from Group Creative Director at Planters’ agency VaynerMedia Mike Pierantozzi who revealed the following in a recent interview with MSN: “We started talking about how the internet treats when someone dies — specifically, we were thinking about fictional characters, [like when] Iron Man died. When Iron Man died, we saw an incredible reaction on Twitter and on social media. It’s such a strange phenomenon.” This led the company to wonder, “What would happen, and how would the world react if [Mr. Peanut] passed away?” He went on to say: “We did the unthinkable: we created a program and an idea where Mr. Peanut dies and dies specifically sacrificing himself for his friends, which has always been a tenet of who he is and what he does — he always puts others first.” You […]

Could Iron Man Make An Appearance In ‘Black Widow?’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/22/could-iron-man-make-an-appearance-in-black-widow/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/22/could-iron-man-make-an-appearance-in-black-widow/#disqus_thread Wed, 22 Jan 2020 22:17:01 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=349023 With Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Widow’ set to premiere on May 1, fans can’t help but throw out theories and rumors about the upcoming film. One such rumor is that Robert Downey Jr. may make an appearance as Iron Man in ‘Black Widow.’ Fans will remember that Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the universe and defeat Thanos in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ However, some find it hard to believe that the hero who launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe is truly gone for good. While many of us would love to see Downey Jr. grace our screens as Iron Man in the future, the actor has stated previously that he feels that chapter is behind him. However, as ‘Black Widow,’ is set before the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ it is not an impossible thought that Iron Man could make an appearance. The issue was brought up in a recent interview with Downey Jr., but the actor stayed hush hush, neither confirming nor denying, saying: “Right. Great. I mean, it would be nice if they notified me. Forewarned is forearmed. They can do anything now. This could be a deep fake interview for all we know.” Directed by Cate Shortland from a script written […]

Robert Downey Jr. Weighs In On “The Real Genius Of The Marvel Creative Team” https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/17/robert-downey-jr-weighs-in-on-the-real-genius-of-the-marvel-creative-team/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/17/robert-downey-jr-weighs-in-on-the-real-genius-of-the-marvel-creative-team/#disqus_thread Fri, 17 Jan 2020 16:28:17 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=348566 It is hard to imagine the Marvel Cinematic Universe as being quite as popular as it is without Robert Downey Jr. introducing the world to Tony Stark as ‘Iron Man.’ Now, the actor is making sure to spread around the love and stresses exactly how much the creative team at Marvel Studios deserves credit for bringing the franchise together. “The Infinity Saga,” which told the story of not just the rise of Thanos but the entire arc of Iron Man, clocked in at 23-films, and behind it, all was an amazing creative team. They had to not only bring this story full-circle but also keep everything working together without making any major mistakes along the way. While a few timeline issues have cropped up in the MCU, for the most part, the continuity has been pretty solid when you factor in exactly how many movies, characters, story arcs, writers, directors, and actors have all been involved. As to how they’ve been able to do it? The actor recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s show and stated: “I just think that the real genius of the Marvel creative team, and the Russo Brothers who did the last few. Avengers: Infinity War and […]

We’re the one weekly column right here on ScienceFiction.com where we seek out all of the awesome news you need to know about any announcements and cool happenings in the toy industry and put them all in one easy to find place for you! This week things have been quiet. A little too quiet. With New York Toy Fair 2020 just a few weeks away, it would only make sense that things would go mostly silent on the toy news front. Most of our favorite companies are holding back all of their cool new reveals for the convention itself, which just means we all have to wait a little longer to see all of the neat stuff we will be adding to our collections this year. Still, this week we have some great new items to check out from our friends at Diamond Select Toys, NECA, Super7, Spinmaster, and Mezco! It may not be much, but there is still plenty to be excited about in the Toy News for the week of January 14th, 2020! In Stores Now From Diamond Select Toys Things might be […]

Iron Man No More: Robert Downey Jr. Verifies He’s Done With Tony Stark https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/13/iron-man-no-more-robert-downey-jr-verifies-hes-done-with-tony-stark/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/13/iron-man-no-more-robert-downey-jr-verifies-hes-done-with-tony-stark/#disqus_thread Tue, 14 Jan 2020 02:09:33 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=348218 Sorry for those holding out that Robert Downey Jr. could return as Iron Man but the actor has once again confirmed that he is done playing the part of “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” Tony Stark. After the conclusion of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ fans have all known that to be a fact, but with time travel, a multiverse, AI’s, and prequels to boot, there was always a chance that Marvel Studios could find a way to bring back the legendary hero. That just isn’t meant to be. While promoting the upcoming release of ‘Dolittle,’ Downey recently did an interview with Parade where it was inevitable that his time as Tony Stark would come up. His response should put to rest any hopes of a potential revival: “The war for me is over. I personally have alighted to greener pastures. There’s been two times where I’ve gone into a feverish-almost-like-a-waking dream in prep for something. It’s not so much that I related to him as much as I just presumed that it was my destiny to build this character around all of my experiences.” I really don’t think anyone should be too surprised at this. With the actor having already been working on […]

First, in 1985, an elaborate float was created by Mattel to promote its popular ‘Masters of the Universe’ and ‘Princess of Power’ toy lines.  The front of the float was a recreation of Castle Grayskull, while the rear was the Crystal Castle.  A giant serpent towered in between. Below you can find concept art for the float: This was one of the most technically advanced floats to ever appear in the Macy’s parade. Riding on the float were He-Man and She-Ra, their allies Angella, Buzz-Off, Castaspella, Frosta, Glimmer, Man-at-Arms, Moss Man, Orko, and Teela, and villains like Hordak, Skeletor, Beast Man, Catra, and Grizzlor.  Interestingly, even though the float was presumably meant to promote the toys, the ‘She-Ra’ characters are actually based on the way the characters looked on the cartoon, for instance, Castaspella’s outfit is blue and […]

Tom Holland took home Action Movie Star for ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, while Zendaya won Female Movie Star.  She also took home Drama TV Star for her HBO series ‘Euphoria’. It may be called the “People’s Choice Awards” but perhaps a better name would be the “YOUNG People’s Choice,” as most of the winners skewed decidedly in the teen direction.  ‘Riverdale’ star Cole Sprouse won Drama Movie Star of 2019 (for the relative dud ‘Five Feet Apart’), beating the likes of Taron Egerton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Samuel L. Jackson, and joked that their day would come.  Sprouse also won Male TV Star of 2019 for ‘Riverdale’, besting Kit Harington, Norman Reedus, Finn Wolfhard, Jim Parsons, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, and his co-star KJ Apa. Similarly, heartthrob Noah […]

Kevin Feige was honored with the first Stan Lee World Builder Award and after accepting the award, he revealed this particular post-credits scene:   At the Saturn Awards, Kevin Feige revealed an alternate version of the post-credits scene from ‘IRON MAN’ with Nick Fury mentioning “mutants” and “radioactive bug bites”. Marvel Studios appearance in that film. While reporting the winners of the 45th Annual Saturn Awards, Deadline mentioned that Downey, scored the trophy for Best Actor in a Film, would be making one last appearance in his famous role: “Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020.” Deadline isn’t a gossip or rumor website.  It’s a solid entertainment news site, with a lot of resources to confirm facts, so if they are reporting this, it’s most likely true.  It’s a bit odd that this fact wasn’t announced with more fanfare, or on the opposite end of the spectrum, wasn’t kept locked down under the strictest secrecy.  But this was just a casual mention in a report on something mostly unrelated.   RELATED:  Like Tony Stark In ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron,’ Robert Downey Jr. Wants To […]
