Netflix has proudly announced that its new comedy series, ‘Space Force’ has begun filming. Steve Carell stars and co-created the series with his ‘The Office’ collaborators Greg Daniels and Howard Klein. To celebrate the beginning of production, Netflix shared a behind-the-scenes tease photo of Carell suited up as the show’s lead character, Mark R. Naird, “a General tapped by the White House to lead a new branch of the Armed Forces with the goal of putting American ‘Boots on the Moon’ by 2024.” The series is based on a plan announced by President Trump to launch a sixth branch of the military… in space.

Carell starred for seven seasons as the clueless boss, Michael Scott on the popular NBC sitcom ‘The Office’. The series continued without Carell for two more seasons, but wrapped up in 2013, but has remained incredibly popular, specifically on Netflix. However, that series, along with other streaming favorites like ‘Parks and Recreation’ and ‘Friends’ are leaving the service in the coming months. Even with all of the original programming Netflix offers, these older “comfort” shows are among its most popular shows. Hopefully, ‘Space Force’ will help fill the void, by offering light-hearted comedy that doesn’t necessarily have to be binge-watched, but can be enjoyed an episode at a time, at the viewer’s convenience.
Joining Carell on his voyage are: John Malkovich as Dr. Adrian Mallory, “Head Science Advisor, brilliant, arrogant and hoping to prevent space from becoming the next great international battlefield”; Ben Schwartz as F. Tony Scarapiducci, “a self-centered media consultant whose Machiavellian goals only sometimes line up with those of Mark or Space Force”; Diana Silvers as Mark R. Naird’s daughter, Erin Naird, “Popular and an A-student in Washington DC, Mark’s daughter is an outcast in Wild Horse Colorado after transferring to a remote military base and turns to delinquency”; and Tawny Newsome as Angela Ali, is described as a “Helicopter pilot, ambitious and competitive, with secret dreams that she keeps close to the vest.” In recurring roles, the series also features Jimmy O. Yang as Doctor Chan Kaifang, “Doctor Mallory’s right hand man, Chan is a brilliant astrophysicist and rocket engineer who immigrated from China as a teenager and loves all things American, from fly fishing to the Baltimore Orioles,” and Alex Sparrow as Yuri ‘Bobby’ Telatovich, “A charming observer from the Russian Government, Yuri is curious about many things in Mark’s life, like his daughter, or the tech specs of the Javelin missile.”
With ‘Space Force’ now filming, it should arrive next year on Netflix.
