Justin H. Min, a.k.a. Ben Hargreeves (RIP), wasn’t a series regular in Season 1 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, and wasn’t even sure if his character would return for S2.  Luckily, not only was he brought back, but bumped up to regular status and given a larger role in the overall story.  But by the end of the season, it looked as though Ben was gone for good, and actually, THAT Ben probably is. But at the very end of the last episode, viewers caught a glimpse of a new Ben, whose life’s trajectory took a different path, thanks to the Academy’s journey back in time. Min teases a little bit about what fans can expect IF ‘The Umbrella Academy’ returns for a third season: “Yeah. Honestly, I think I’m the luckiest cast member. In Season 1, I didn’t have to deal with any of the pressures that all of my other cast members had to deal with, with bringing these iconic, beloved comic book characters to life. There was so much pressure for all of […]

There is still at least one question viewers still have after ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2: How did Ben die?  All fans know is that his death led to the group disbanding.  This is actually a question that is never answered in the comic books.  Then again, as the actor that plays him, Justin H. Min pointed out, Ben or Ben’s ghost doesn’t appear as a character in the comics.  That’s one way that the show differs from the source material. When asked about Ben’s death by Collider‘s Christina Radish, Min stated: “Oh, Christina, you know I can’t tell you that.” Ben was not a series regular during S1, but was more heavily featured in S2.  Then, in the final scene, he is shown to still be alive, thanks to the Umbrella Academy’s time-travel mucking changing history. “I know some stuff. That’s all I’m able to say, or I’ll be sent to Netflix jail. I will say that I appreciate the ambiguity and the mystery behind it. You get into that in Season 2, particularly […]

And after her disastrous romantic relationship with Leonard Peabody a.k.a. Harold Jenkins (John Magaro) in S1, Vanya finds romance in an unlikely partner, unhappy Texas housewife and mother to an autistic son, Sissy Cooper (Marin Ireland). Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison) and Ellen Page (Vanya) discussed the relevance of their ’60s set season to issues facing society today. Raver-Lampman stated: “It is driving home a point that there is still so much work to be done.  Having Allison be part of the civil rights movement and […]

But perhaps one reveal that viewers didn’t even know they were supposed to be wondering about is the true origin of Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the eccentric, hardnosed millionaire that adopted seven of the mystery kids– even though he seems to HATE children– and raised them to be the dysfunctional family forced to save the world from total annihilation… twice. He seemed fairly cut-and-dry, but some of his behavior and abilities are odd upon reflection.  I mean he had an intelligent talking chimpanzee and built a completely life-like robot to raise his kids with the tenderness he could not produce himself.  He sent his #1 son, Luther (Tom Hopper), to live on the moon, essentially to get him out from under his feet. Things seemed a little too good to be true at the end of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ S2.  The Handler (Kate Walsh) had been killed by the last Swede, and the Commission was, for the time being, in the benevolent hands of Herb (Ken Hall).  With the apocalypse averted, the Hargreeves kids returned to 2019, but as usual, time had been disrupted by their shenanigans again.  The first major change is that their father, Reginald Hargreeves was alive.  But that was just the setup.  They soon discovered that they had been replaced by The Sparrow Academy, fronted by a still-alive Ben (Justin H. Min). Who are The Sparrow Academy? Well, as most know, ‘The Umbrella Academy’ is based on the comic book series written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá.  Surely the answer lies in the source material, right?  Except it doesn’t. The Sparrow Academy, or The Sparrows, have just debuted in the comic.  The explanation of who they are will be explained in Way and Bá’s next series.  Way spoke […]

But one thing that should delight fans is that this clip delivers the Umbrella Academy in full superhero mode, fighting for survival until their last breath… maybe. There are a lot of surprises, so I won’t say anymore.  Check out the clip for yourself below: Yes, it appears that Vanya is fully in control of her powers, which seem a bit like Jean Grey’s telekinesis.  And Klaus can now not just communicate with the invisible dead, but can give them form and a certain amount of solidity.  Allison’s injury from S1 (she was rendered mute after her throat was slit) has been healed and is more powerful than ever.  […]

Blige co-starred as the time-traveling assassin Cha-Cha and also provided a cover of Rod Stewart’s ‘Stay With Me’. While we don’t know what delightful audio nuggets will pop up in S2, Aiden Gallagher, who plays Five, praised the use of music on the show and gave a bit of insight. “I’m always excited, but I’m also very respectful of the music that Steve [Blackman] chooses for the show.  I saw an interview where Quentin Tarantino was talking about his writing process and how he […]

Min), Diego and Five will share the most scenes of any configuration of Hargreeves siblings.  Will they be a dynamic duo or an odd couple?  (Considering how odd this show is overall, probably the latter or a mixture of both.) Castañeda compared Diego and Five, saying: “I think that they’re both very driven and passionate about their task, and they really won’t let anything get in the way.  Even if, Diego at least, even if he finds himself being wrong, he’ll still find a way to figure why he’s right. So I think when you put those two mentalities together, it makes it fun to watch.” Gallagher added: “That was great.  It’s very fun as an actor to be in the skin of Five and to have Diego as a brother. Those two characters, they both are very driven and determined, and where Five isn’t as personable as he should be, Diego makes up for it. So you […]

The series stars Ellen Page (Vanya), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Number 5), and Justin H. Min (Ben) as children who were all born on the same day to women who were not pregnant when they woke up that morning.  This unexplained phenomenon resulted in them possessing superpowers, with the apparent exception of Page’s Vanya.  Eccentric millionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) bought these seven children and turned them into an X-Men like super group.  Jordan Claire Robbins co-stars as the kids’ “mother,” a robot programmed to look and act like a stereotypical 1950s TV mom.  Season 1 also included Mary J. Blige as time-traveling assassin Cha-Cha, Cameron Britton as her partner Hazel, John Magaro as stalker/superfan Leonard Peabody/Harold Jenkins, and Adam Godley and Ken Hall […]

Luckily, Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ did just that.  It’s officially been over a year since the series, based on the comic written by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, with art by Gabriel Bá, dropped on Netflix, but there is good news.  The second season has been completely shot.  Actually, from the sound of things, the show is getting the finishing touches courtesy of composer Jeff Russo. Not only did Russo score the first season, but he worked with the show’s creator and showrunner, Steve Blackman, as well as Way to integrate an eclectic mix of songs from various genres, including songs by Way (a cover of Simon and Garfunkle’s “Hazy Shade of Winter”), series co-stars Emmy Raver-Lampman and Mary J. Blige, the Bay City Rollers, Nina Simone, The Doors, The Kinks, Queen, Radiohead, They Might Be Giants, and of course, ’80s mall titan, Tiffany (among many more).  In fact, the “I Think We’re Alone Now” dance montage was nominated for an MTV Movie and TV Award for Best Musical Moment.  (It lost to “Shallow” […]

The #1 most-viewed series was ‘Stranger Things 3’, which should come as no surprise as it shattered Netflix streaming records when it arrived on July 4.  At that time, Netflix announced: “40.7 million household accounts have been watching the show since its July 4 global launch — more than any other film or series in its first four days. And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.” After the success of ‘Stranger Things 3’, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers signed a huge overall deal with Netflix to produce a fourth season (which may or may not be the last) in addition to other projects. Not only is ‘Stranger Things 3’ the most-watched Netflix series for 2019, but it’s the second-most-watched original programming overall, coming in behind the Adam Sandler movie ‘Murder Mystery’. Pulling a last-minute upset, the new series ‘The Witcher’, which just launched on December 20, is the second-most-watched show on Netflix for 2019.  It looks as though many people took advantage of being off from work or school for Christmas in […]

Tana Ford Takes On The TSA With ‘LaGuardia’ https://sciencefiction.com/2019/11/19/tana-ford-takes-on-the-tsa-with-laguardia/ https://sciencefiction.com/2019/11/19/tana-ford-takes-on-the-tsa-with-laguardia/#disqus_thread Tue, 19 Nov 2019 23:48:22 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=343241 Allegory is among the proudest traditions in science fiction, having permeated the genre for as long as it’s been a genre. It makes sense, of course. In a genre that allows you to frame issues outside of their familiar, contemporary context, it’s naturally easier to encourage your audience to consider them from a new perspective. Sometimes that means slipping some obvious-in-retrospect social commentary past Standards and Practices. Others it’s about embedding themes in a work that may only become apparent on the third or fourth read. In any case, it means that science fiction is often uniquely equipped to address the issues of the day. And in this day, one of the biggest issues is that of immigration. That’s where ‘LaGuardia’ – the latest collaboration between writer Nnedi Okorafor and artist Tana Ford – comes in. Set in a near future world in which aliens have – more or less – integrated with human society, ‘LaGuardia’ interrogates issues surrounding immigration in a manner reminiscent of ‘District 9’. We had the opportunity to speak with Tana Ford about the book, which is now available in trade paperback. Our conversation covered the origins of the story, Tana’s artistic influences, and the trials and […]

Exclusive Interview: Todd Nauck Joins The Riffing With ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Comic’ https://sciencefiction.com/2019/10/16/exclusive-interview-todd-nauck-joins-the-riffing-with-mystery-science-theater-300-the-comic/ https://sciencefiction.com/2019/10/16/exclusive-interview-todd-nauck-joins-the-riffing-with-mystery-science-theater-300-the-comic/#disqus_thread Wed, 16 Oct 2019 22:57:15 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=339994 I know what you’re thinking. “How the hell do you make a comic out of Mystery Science Theater 3000?” It’s the first question I asked when the  book was announced. But thankfully, ‘MST3K’ maestro Joel Hodgson is smarter than me. In retrospect though, the answer is obvious. Instead of riffing on movies, the comic versions of Jonah and the bots riff on, well, comics. Specifically, Golden and Silver age comics that have since lapsed into the public domain. And if you know your comics history, you know that comics of that vintage give them plenty of material to work with! Unlike the series, in which the hosts watch the movies and crack jokes, the riffing here works by turning Jonah and company into participants in the events of the books on which they are riffing. But of course, it’s not all riffs. Like the show it’s based on, ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Comic’ also includes host segments with the bots, TV’s Son of TV’s Frank, and the rest of the Netflix-era cast. At this year’s New York Comic Con, we had the opportunity to chat with artist Todd Nauck, who pencilled the comic’s host segments. Our conversation touched on […]
