Fans of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ the series will always fondly recall the Nickelodeon series as one of the finest 3 seasons of television ever produced, and that counts whether you are talking about animation or live-action. The storylines, characters, dialogue, style, music, action pieces, everything just worked exceptionally well and remains a bright spot in the nostalgic memories of many fans, marred only by the M. Night Shyamalan movie that came soon after which forever tarnished the legacy of the series.

It became almost impossible to get new people on-board to watch the animated series without there being skepticism because people had heard about that movie, and fans were downtrodden that so many might miss out on an amazing series because of an awful adaptation.
Now, to add fuel to the fire, we are learning that apparently there were plans to do a FOURTH season of the original series, but all of that was scrapped due to the movie being worked on. According to former head-writer Aaron Ehasz during a recent Twitter statement:
“Truthfully, there was a moment in time when we all thought we would do a 4th season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Then along came M. Night…”
Though to be clear, M Night wanted us to do a 4th season, but Mike and Bryan wanted to focus on the movie.

As you can read above in his Twitter statements, he does not necessarily lay all the blame at the feet of M. Night, instead saying the people behind the show chose to shelve the 4th season in order to help out with the movie, which clearly did not go at all to plan. And what would the 4th season have been about? Ehasz shared that as well, which you can see below:
Despite it all, her brother Zuko would be there for her. Believing in her, sticking by her, doing his best to understand and help her hold her pain that she can no longer hold alone. Zuko — patient, forgiving, and unconditionally loving – all strengths he gained from Uncle Iroh.

While true that this sounds more like an epilogue season than a main season, especially since Ang’s story was basically completed after the original 3 seasons, it still might have been fun to spend a little more time in the world of the show with those characters that we had come to love so much. And Zuko and Azula having a redemption storyline does sound like something that would have been interesting, especially with Zuko showing how much he learned from his Uncle over the course of the original series. And while we did get ‘The Legend of Korra’ a few years later, that show had a completely different setting and tone and the characters from the original were more mythological characters by that point. It never felt like we really got back to the world we left behind when the original ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ ended.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Are you sad we did not get that 4th season? Or do you think it all worked out for the best, and 3 seasons was just enough? Feel free to comment below!
