freakish

Genre “it characters” seem to come in waves; in the early and mid-2000s, zombies ruled the theaters, with some trickle-down effects still being felt on TV to this day (not that that’s a bad thing, of course).  For the last decade or so, superheroes have been all the rage at the box office, with super-powered stories also finding their way to TV sets as well.  So, the big question in Hollywood is almost assuredly: what’s next?

The X-Men have been doing well in films and in animated-TV form for quite some time now, with one or more TV series coming from their side of the Marvel Universe – so perhaps the next wave of fictional entities to hit the screens will be mutants?  If so, Hulu is getting in on the ground floor of this potentially-emerging trend with their new streaming series, ‘Freakish.’

The show, produced in conjunction with AwesomenessTV, starts focused on a group of high school students who are forced to hole up in their school when a meltdown at a local chemical plant begins to turn the surrounding population into mutated freaks.  Chad L. Coleman, known to genre fans for his portrayal of Tyreese on ‘The Walking Dead,’ among his other roles, leads the rest of the younger-skewed cast made up of lots of relatively-unknown but up-and-coming talent.  Hayes Grier, Leo Howard, Liza Koshy, Adam Hicks, Aislinn Paul, Tyler Chase, Meghan Rienks, Melvin Gregg, Mary Mouser, and Chachi Gonzales also star.

Take a peek at the trailer for the series:

You can watch all 10 episodes of the first season of ‘Freakish’ streaming on Hulu starting Monday, October 10th.
