‘Wonder Woman’ has taken the box office by storm this past weekend, opening to the projected tune of over $100 million domestically and over $200 globally. It has received high praise from critics and audiences alike and seems to be the first bonafide wide-release hit for the burgeoning DC Extended Universe of films.
The question is immediately begged, then: what are the plans for a potential sequel? Leading up to the movie’s release, Warner Brothers seemed noncommittal, but based on the film’s strong opening, a ‘Wonder Woman 2: Electric Boogaloo ” seems inevitable, right? In an interview with EW, here’s what director Patty Jenkins had to say on the matter:
“I’m not a big obligation person when it comes to art. You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it. Then I had this revelation in the middle of the night: this is your dream cast, you’ve created a character that you love and you can say anything you want in the world right now. I realized that ‘Wonder Woman 2’ [would be] its own great movie. I made ‘Wonder Woman.’ Now I want to make ‘Wonder Woman 2.’ It’s a beautiful story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love.”
So, she’s on-board, which is phenomenal, seeing as how a large chunk of the first film’s success is due to her work and input, obviously. Has Jenkins put any thought into story or setting for a follow-up film? Mum’s the word so far on a potential storyline – that likely depends on the continual evolution of the larger DCEU story and how that unfolds – but as for location, Jenkins seems to have something in mind:
“The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right. She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”
