Netflix has revealed that the newest iteration of the series, ‘Stone Ocean,’ will be premiering globally on the streaming service this coming December.  Check out the official series description and first teaser trailer: Florida, U.S.A, 2011 — After an accident while on a drive with her sweetheart, Jolyne Cujoh falls into a trap and is sentenced to fifteen years at the state-run maximum-security correctional facility Green Dolphin Street Prison—AKA “the Aquarium.” On the verge of despair, she receives a pendant from her father that causes a mysterious power to awaken inside of her. “There are things in this world that are more terrifying than death, and what’s happening in this prison is definitely one of them.” A message from a mysterious boy who appears before Jolyne, inexplicable events that occur one after another, the horrifying truth told to her by her father when […]

10 New Images From Netflix’s Upcoming ‘Masters Of The Universe’ Miniseries https://sciencefiction.com/2021/05/13/10-new-images-from-netflixs-upcoming-masters-of-the-universe-miniseries/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/05/13/10-new-images-from-netflixs-upcoming-masters-of-the-universe-miniseries/#disqus_thread Thu, 13 May 2021 16:36:45 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355591 Later this year, Netflix will bring another old-school cartoon property back to live with their 5-part miniseries ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation,’ spearheaded by long-time pop-culture creator Kevin Smith.  Serving as the showrunner and executive producer, Smith is joined by behind-the-scenes talent from the original ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ series, including Frederick Soulie as an executive producer and Susan Cordin as a producer.  Longtime Smith co-collaborator Marc Bernardin serves as one of the writers, and the series’ music is composed by Bear McCreary. Speaking about what the original 1980s cartoon series meant to him, Smith had this to say: I watched all of the TV series growing up, it was everywhere in the ‘80s. These characters started off as toys and ended up becoming part of the global pop culture fabric. So much of this show has been possible because of the love and affection for this world at every level of production and the fandom surrounding this franchise. A big reason we got such top tier voice talent is because people genuinely want to be a part of this world. So many of us were touched by these stories and these characters early in our lives […]

Dominique Fishback Is “So Thankful” For Her Unique Character In ‘Project Power’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/18/dominique-fishback-is-so-thankful-for-her-unique-character-in-project-power/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/18/dominique-fishback-is-so-thankful-for-her-unique-character-in-project-power/#disqus_thread Tue, 18 Aug 2020 11:00:22 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355134 Netflix’s latest original movie, ‘Project Power’ debuted over the weekend and was a huge success.  (Netflix doesn’t release streaming numbers, but it was #1 for all three days.)  The film stars Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but it seems that the breakout performance came from Dominique Fishback, who portrayed aspiring rapper/drug dealer, Robin, who gets dragged into Foxx’s character, Arthur’s vendetta against the pharmaceutical company that is flooding the streets with a designer drug called Power, which gives users superpowers for a limited time. Fishback previously co-starred on the Emmy-nominated series ‘The Deuce’, sketch comedy series ‘Random Acts of Flyness’, and the period miniseries ‘Show Me A Hero’, all of which were released by HBO.  She also appeared in the films ‘The Hate U Give’ and ‘Night Comes On’. But she seems particularly connected to her role as Robin, telling Variety: “I was so thankful to [screenwriter] Mattson Tomlin because she was really on the page already — we knew what she cared about, we knew who she loved, we knew her passions, we knew her fears.  We really got a chance to see her heart on the paper so that just made it even more exciting for me to […]

‘Project Power’ Tackles The Tricky Subject Of Police Corruption With A Superpowered Edge https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/17/project-power-tackles-the-tricky-subject-of-police-corruption-with-a-superpowered-edge/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/17/project-power-tackles-the-tricky-subject-of-police-corruption-with-a-superpowered-edge/#disqus_thread Mon, 17 Aug 2020 12:00:10 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355083 Netflix’s latest original film, ‘Project Power’, completely slipped under my radar, but it arrived this weekend, to strong streaming numbers (it’s currently #1), and is the latest example of a movie that was made prior to most of the current events of the last several months, yet somehow managed to perfectly tap into timely issues.  Following the murders of African Americans George Floyd and Breona Taylor, among many others, at the hands of the police, rallies have called for the police to be defunded and dismantled. ‘Project Power’ filters that through a superhero lens, in a world where a corporation has flooded the streets with a designer drug that gives people superpowers, appropriately called “Power.”  But the effects are unpredictable and don’t last long, so as in the case of most illicit substances, users have to keep going back for more.  One such abuser is a cop himself, Frank Shaver (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).  When he takes Power, it makes his skin impenetrable (see: Luke Cage).  Thanks to Power, Shaver gets to be the “I play by my own rules” renegade cop that has been glamorized in films for years. But “Power” doesn’t just refer to superpowers or the drug itself.  The […]

Dave Bautista heads up the ensemble cast which also includes Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Huma Qureshi, Omari Hardwick, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder, and Samantha Win.  Snyder co-wrote the screenplay with Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword), and Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum). According to Snyder, the movie kicks off in Las Vegas, which has been walled-off from the zombie hordes with the use of shipping containers.  […]

I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production. “When Bryan and I signed on to the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said that it was committed to honoring our vision for this retelling and to supporting us on creating the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.” DiMartino went on to refer to this as “the hardest professional decision I’ve ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity. ”  It definitely sounds as though the project Netflix wanted isn’t […]

Hilary Swank Brings The Drama To The Trailer For Netflix’s ‘Away’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/11/hilary-swank-brings-the-drama-to-the-trailer-for-netflixs-away/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/11/hilary-swank-brings-the-drama-to-the-trailer-for-netflixs-away/#disqus_thread Wed, 12 Aug 2020 00:54:03 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354992 Netflix’s new series ‘Away’ brings a different approach to science fiction, as it seems to be more focused on family drama, as opposed to action.  And that should come as no surprise, as it was created by Andrew Hinderaker, a former writer and story editor of ‘Pure Genius’ and ‘Penny Dreadful’, and is executive produced by ‘Friday Night Lights’ and ‘Parenthood’s Jason Katims.  Jessica Goldberg, who also wrote for ‘Parenthood’, and created the Hulu series ‘The Path’, serves as showrunner. Two-time Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank brings the real star power as astronaut Emma Green, part of the crew of a spacecraft making the first manned voyage to Mars.  ‘The Good Wife’s Josh Charles portrays her husband, Matt, and Talitha Eliana Bateman plays her teenage daughter, Alexis, whom Emma leaves behind to make this perilous journey. This is Netflix’s description of ‘Away’: Commander Emma Green leaves behind her husband and daughter to lead an international crew of astronauts on a perilous three-year mission to Mars. The cast also includes Ato Essandoh as Kwesi (a botanist and first-time astronaut), Mark Ivanir as Misha (a veteran Russian cosmonaut and engineer), Ray Panthaki as Ram (the Indian medic, co-pilot, and second-in-command), and Vivian Wu […]

Netflix Acquires ‘Fear Street’ Trilogy From Disney; Will Release Them Next Year https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/11/netflix-acquires-fear-street-trilogy-from-disney-will-release-them-next-year/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/11/netflix-acquires-fear-street-trilogy-from-disney-will-release-them-next-year/#disqus_thread Tue, 11 Aug 2020 21:59:49 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354977 ‘Fear Street’ was a project that was set into motion by 20th Century Fox before it was acquired by Disney, but it seems it was far along enough that Disney allowed it to be finished.  Originally, Fox planned to release ‘Fear Street’, based on R.L. Stine’s older-skewing horror novels as three theatrical movies, one month apart, starting this past June.  Obviously, that didn’t happen. Now it appears that ‘Fear Street’ won’t get a theatrical release at all, as Netflix has reportedly acquired the films from Disney.  Netflix has announced that ‘Fear Street’ will be part of an initiative called The Summer of Fear, next year.  Netflix plans to stick to the one-month-apart release plan. In 1994, a group of teenagers find out that the terrifying events that have occurred in their town of Shadyside, Ohio may be connected to each other, and that they may be the next targets. The other movies will be set in 1978 and 1666, but will wrap up back in 1994.  The 1978 movie sounds like a summer camp slasher movie, which fits the time period, while the 1666 story, reportedly involves witches.  All three will be tied together in one over-arching story. Reportedly, all […]

Justin H. Min, a.k.a. Ben Hargreeves (RIP), wasn’t a series regular in Season 1 of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, and wasn’t even sure if his character would return for S2.  Luckily, not only was he brought back, but bumped up to regular status and given a larger role in the overall story.  But by the end of the season, it looked as though Ben was gone for good, and actually, THAT Ben probably is. But at the very end of the last episode, viewers caught a glimpse of a new Ben, whose life’s trajectory took a different path, thanks to the Academy’s journey back in time. Min teases a little bit about what fans can expect IF ‘The Umbrella Academy’ returns for a third season: “Yeah. Honestly, I think I’m the luckiest cast member. In Season 1, I didn’t have to deal with any of the pressures that all of my other cast members had to deal with, with bringing these iconic, beloved comic book characters to life. There was so much pressure for all of […]

I don’t mean that our stunts aren’t safe. They’re extremely safe. I just mean that there’s always the clumsy individual, which is usually me. “And so, all of Episode 10 being set in the snow actually had to be written in, after the snowstorm hit. It added such an amazing element to the season, but it was such a beautiful mishap. Of course, none of us were dressed for snow. I was in a cape with my arms out and […]

I was so scared!” Yes, that was a real location shoot, not a CGI background created using a green screen. And one of the biggest perils that comes with outdoor filming is the weather.  It seems if a production needs a sunny day, a monsoon rolls in, or vice versa.  ‘Wynonna Earp’ ran into an unexpected blizzard while filming this sequence, but that actually made the scene better, resulting in the cast and crew forcing themselves to endure the harsh winter storm to reshoot an earlier scene so they fit together. “Oh, my God, the timing was incredible.  We had actually shot that sequence and then we had to turn around [the cameras], and then it f–ing starts to blizzard and we’re like, ‘Well, this doesn’t match.’ So then we had […]

There is still at least one question viewers still have after ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2: How did Ben die?  All fans know is that his death led to the group disbanding.  This is actually a question that is never answered in the comic books.  Then again, as the actor that plays him, Justin H. Min pointed out, Ben or Ben’s ghost doesn’t appear as a character in the comics.  That’s one way that the show differs from the source material. When asked about Ben’s death by Collider‘s Christina Radish, Min stated: “Oh, Christina, you know I can’t tell you that.” Ben was not a series regular during S1, but was more heavily featured in S2.  Then, in the final scene, he is shown to still be alive, thanks to the Umbrella Academy’s time-travel mucking changing history. “I know some stuff. That’s all I’m able to say, or I’ll be sent to Netflix jail. I will say that I appreciate the ambiguity and the mystery behind it. You get into that in Season 2, particularly […]

And after her disastrous romantic relationship with Leonard Peabody a.k.a. Harold Jenkins (John Magaro) in S1, Vanya finds romance in an unlikely partner, unhappy Texas housewife and mother to an autistic son, Sissy Cooper (Marin Ireland). Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison) and Ellen Page (Vanya) discussed the relevance of their ’60s set season to issues facing society today. Raver-Lampman stated: “It is driving home a point that there is still so much work to be done.  Having Allison be part of the civil rights movement and […]

But perhaps one reveal that viewers didn’t even know they were supposed to be wondering about is the true origin of Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the eccentric, hardnosed millionaire that adopted seven of the mystery kids– even though he seems to HATE children– and raised them to be the dysfunctional family forced to save the world from total annihilation… twice. He seemed fairly cut-and-dry, but some of his behavior and abilities are odd upon reflection.  I mean he had an intelligent talking chimpanzee and built a completely life-like robot to raise his kids with the tenderness he could not produce himself.  He sent his #1 son, Luther (Tom Hopper), to live on the moon, essentially to get him out from under his feet.
