But what a difference 20 years makes, as TV is now turning out projects that blow away theatrical films in terms of emotional weight and jaw-dropping shockers.  TV of the 2000s and 20-teens has hosted such winners as ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘The West Wing’, ‘Downton Abbey’, and sooooo many more.  Nowadays, streaming is king, delivering newer buzzy hits like ‘Fleabag’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and ‘Orange is the New Black’. But what are the absolute BEST shows of the 21st century?  The UK’s Digital Spy asked readers that very question.  In honor of their first digital issue, available through Amazon News+, the publication took a poll, and the results…? Well, for starters, none of the shows I mentioned are on the list. Hoist your chalice!  ‘Game of Thrones’ has “officially” […]

Show leads, Jeremy Irons (Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias), and Regina King (Angela Abar/Sister Night) scored nods for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and Outstanding Lead Actress, respectively.  Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Calvin Abar/Doctor Manhattan), Jovan Adepo (young William Reeves/Hooded Justice), and Louis Gossett Jr. (old William Reeves) were all nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor, while Jean Smart (Agent Laurie Blake) was recognized in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. ‘Watchmen’ scored the most nominations of any series this year, with Amazon Prime Video’s comedy ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ coming in second with 20.  But also worth noting, Disney+’s ‘The Mandalorian’ scored a shocking 15 nods– “shocking” simply because many saw this as a show that was perhaps too kid/family-skewing or “pop” for the Emmys. Considering that Disney+ just launched last year, these are among Disney+’s first 19 nominations. Even […]

The Duffer Brothers Are Being Sued For Stealing The Idea Behind ‘Stranger Things’… Again! https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/20/the-duffer-brothers-are-being-sued-for-stealing-the-idea-behind-stranger-things-again/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/20/the-duffer-brothers-are-being-sued-for-stealing-the-idea-behind-stranger-things-again/#disqus_thread Mon, 20 Jul 2020 21:06:12 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354275 For the second time, the Duffer Brothers (Matt and Ross) and Netflix are being sued by someone claiming they stole the idea for ‘Stranger Things’.  This time, the suit comes from Irish Rover Entertainment, who allege that ‘Stranger Things’ was swiped from the script for their show called ‘Totem’, written by Jeffrey Kennedy.  The suit accuses the Duffer Brothers of stealing “plot, sequence, characters, theme, dialogue, mood, and setting, as well as copyrighted concept art.”  (‘Totem’ never got made, by the way.) Last year, Netflix and the Duffer Brothers had to go to court to defend their project against Charlie Kessler who accused them of stealing the idea from his 2012 award-winning short ‘Montauk’, which he had hoped to turn into a feature-length film– a plan he reportedly pitched to the Duffers in 2014, at the Tribeca Film Festival. This time, allegedly, a man named Aaron Sims worked closely with Kennedy to develop ‘Totem’, and was then hired to create concept art for ‘Stranger Things’ Seasons 1 and 2. According to The Wrap, the inspiration for ‘Totem’ was the death of Kennedy’s childhood friend, Clint Osthimer, who suffered from epilepsy.  Per the lawsuit: “During their childhood together in rural Indiana, […]

They contact me and I’ll go to Georgia, to Atlanta, and shoot it when they get back up and running.” The actor doesn’t know when that will be.  While Georgia and Atlanta, specifically, have tried to get things “back up and running,” the spread of COVID-19 hasn’t really eased, so as quickly as some things open up, they shut right back down.  The same thing is happening all over this country and in pretty much every other nation where the coronavirus has been spreading among people in the hundreds of thousands.  As Stoffer added, “They haven’t formed their schedule yet.” ‘Stranger Things 4’ began filming in February.  Some filming took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, and in the nearby Lukiškės Prison.  Some of that footage has already been seen in a teaser video […]

This news follows the announcement that Priah Ferguson, who plays Erica Sinclair, Lucas’ sister, has also been promoted to series regular for S4. Following the events of S3, the cast is down one regular, Dacre Montgomery/Billy Hargrove.  Also, Cara Buono’s character, Karen Wheeler, has seen diminishing screen time and may have been dropped down to recurring, or even guest status.  (She has been seen in a recurring role on this season of ‘Supergirl’.)  However, it is known that Buono WILL be back one way or another, as she appears with the rest of the cast […]

We still have almost no details about the story but just knowing that David Harbour is back as Sheriff Hopper is going to have fans squealing with joy. I was always hopeful that we would see Eleven’s adoptive father return as he has been such a great character for the story, but we all know that no one is really safe on the show. You can view the ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 teaser in the tweet below!   From Russia with love… pic.twitter.com/ZWEMgy63Et — Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) February 14, 2020 As you can tell from the Tweet, this clip is called “From Russia with love” and indicates that Hopper is currently working as forced labor by his captors. Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to see how he ended up in Russia instead of The Upside Down. We’ve seen hints that the US Government was trying to use Eleven’s powers to spy and possibly even assassinate targets across the globe, and you can bet […]

That would make Stranger Things 4 one the Netflix drama’s meatiest seasons ever (tied with its sophomore run). I’m also hearing that a fan-favorite character may have his/her origin story told in one (or more) of those nine episodes.” As he noted, Seasons 1 and 3 consisted of eight episodes, and 2 had nine.  The extra episode in S2 allowed for the installment “The Lost Sister” which introduced Eleven’s sister Kali.  Very few viewers liked the episode, but in a sense, it was a bonus, so it’s hard to complain about that. There remains some question as to whether or not S4 will be the last.  Obviously, Netflix would probably keep this cash cow running for as long as possible, but the creators, the Duffer Brothers, have always been clear that this was a finite story with a definite end.  And the kids aren’t getting any younger.  (Caleb McLaughlin who plays Lucas is 18!  The youngest among them, Noah Schnapp/Will is 15.) Now comes the question […]

And I know what you’re thinking: “This article would’ve been better of New Years Day.” Well, I’ve been sick for over a week, but I had to make sure that you guys saw just how what kind of damage these characters could do.  This list is in no particular order and not listed in increasing or decreasing strength. This list also does not have Thanos because I thought he was too obvious. *WARNING: There are spoilers ahead of some shows and films listed.*  Shinichi and Migi (‘Parasyte: The Maxim’) ‘Parasyte: The Maxim’ is a manga series about a teenager whose right hand is taken over by a worm-like creature known as a parasite. While Shinichi is human and does not have his own powers, he and Migi, unlike others who have been intertwined with parasites, still retain their separate identities and personalities. Their strange circumstance gives them an edge in battles against parasites who attack them. Migi can turn his host’s hand into different types of weapons for battle and eventually is able to separate from Shinichi’s body for […]

The #1 most-viewed series was ‘Stranger Things 3’, which should come as no surprise as it shattered Netflix streaming records when it arrived on July 4.  At that time, Netflix announced: “40.7 million household accounts have been watching the show since its July 4 global launch — more than any other film or series in its first four days. And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.” After the success of ‘Stranger Things 3’, the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers signed a huge overall deal with Netflix to produce a fourth season (which may or may not be the last) in addition to other projects. Not only is ‘Stranger Things 3’ the most-watched Netflix series for 2019, but it’s the second-most-watched original programming overall, coming in behind the Adam Sandler movie ‘Murder Mystery’. Pulling a last-minute upset, the new series ‘The Witcher’, which just launched on December 20, is the second-most-watched show on Netflix for 2019.  It looks as though many people took advantage of being off from work or school for Christmas in […]

Some were initially unsure of how far the show would go. David Harbour who stars as Chief Jim Hopper is one of those people most surprised by the success of  ‘Stranger Things” as he originally thought the series would end shortly after its debut. His initial apprehension is understandable, stemming from the series’ featuring a young cast that lacked major stars, virtually unknown creators, and the fact that the series came almost out of nowhere.  Harbour spoke of his original trepidation on the fate of the show at an appearance on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.’    “I was sure it was gonna be a complete disaster and a big failure, because, before it came out — I remember when we were shooting, too, we would all sit around talking about how terrible it was gonna be, mainly because of my performance. I thought I was tanking the whole show. And then, before it came out, you normally see things on buses. I live in New York. I’m wandering around, buses, phone […]

Tom Holland took home Action Movie Star for ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, while Zendaya won Female Movie Star.  She also took home Drama TV Star for her HBO series ‘Euphoria’. It may be called the “People’s Choice Awards” but perhaps a better name would be the “YOUNG People’s Choice,” as most of the winners skewed decidedly in the teen direction.  ‘Riverdale’ star Cole Sprouse won Drama Movie Star of 2019 (for the relative dud ‘Five Feet Apart’), beating the likes of Taron Egerton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Samuel L. Jackson, and joked that their day would come.  Sprouse also won Male TV Star of 2019 for ‘Riverdale’, besting Kit Harington, Norman Reedus, Finn Wolfhard, Jim Parsons, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, and his co-star KJ Apa. Similarly, heartthrob Noah […]

November 6 was officially “Stranger Things Day” and in celebration, the creators unleashed a trio of blooper reels— one for each season.  But that wasn’t all.  Below you can see a photograph of the script for the first episode of Season 4, courtesy of the show’s writers (in this case, the show’s creators The Duffer Brothers), and as you can see, the title is “The Hellfire Club.” Once upon a #StrangerThingsDay, the @strangerwriters told us the first episode title of Stranger Things 4 and we never ever recovered. https://t.co/s2ZDsOUwKB — Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) November 7, 2019 I guess it would be more accurate to say that The Duffer Brothers are Marvels, and have transferred that preference to their young protagonists.  But that wouldn’t be much of a stretch, considering […]

Even though ‘Stranger Things’ stars a large number of teen actors, it sometimes seems that it’s the adults that have the hardest time delivering their lines, especially David Harbour who, according to this clip, can’t seem to say the word “Grandma” without bursting out laughing.  It gets so bad, his youthful co-star Millie Bobbie Brown exclaims, “What’s wrong with you?!”   RELATED:  ‘Stranger Things 4’: Here’s How Many Episodes You Can Expect, And An Idea Of When They’ll Be Here   Check out the Season 3 blooper reel below:   If you can’t get enough of the hijinks of the ‘Stranger Things’ cast, here is the Season 1 blooper reel.  […]

Move over Robin.  Some new characters are being introduced in ‘Stranger Things 4’.  Following the events of Season 3, the cast is short a few male characters, so four new ones are coming aboard.  Three of them are teens, and one is an adult.  One of the teens is a metalhead, one is an entitled jock, and one is described by TV Line as sounding “an awful lot like the twin of Fast Times at Ridgemont High stoner Jeff Spicoli.”  The adult character is said to likely be part of a storyline a “far, far away from Hawkins”– in other words, Russia.  (Oh, I guess it was still called the Soviet Union back then.) The metalhead and entitled jock sound like they could be replacements for Billy (Dacre Montgomery).  Billy was a metalhead, and appeared to be pretty good at basketball, and presumably swimming, since he was a lifeguard.  He certainly wasn’t entitled, but Steve kind of was.  If you recall, Steve (Joe Keery) was originally an entitled jerk and bully, before the show’s creators […]
