Syfy’s decidedly not-campy new series, ‘Helix’ will launch on January 10th, 2014. The series, headed by ‘Battlestar Galactica’ showrunner Ronald D. Moore, focuses on a team of Center for Disease Control scientists who journey to a research facility called Arctic Biosystems in the arctic to investigate a possible pandemic outbreak. According to the official plot synopsis, these scientists “find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation. However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel.”
Clearly, there are certain overtones of John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’. That comparison becomes even stronger once you watch the video:
‘Helix’ stars Billy Campbell as Doctor Alan Farragut, the leader of the CDC’s Special Pathogens Branch. Jeri Ryan plays Constance Sutton, the chief operating officer of Ilaria Corporation, the corporation that owns Arctic Biosystems, where the research is taking place. Hiroyuki Sanada plays the facility’s head Doctor Hiroshi Hataki, who seems well-meaning at first, but who may be hiding a dark secret.
Kyra Zargosky stars as Doctor Julia Walker, Farragut’s ex-wife and collegue. Also among the cast are Jordan Hayes and Catherine Lemieux as Doctors Sarah Jordan and Doreen Boyle, members of Farragut’s rapid response team, Mark Ghanime as Major Sergio Balleseros, the Army liaison for Farragut’s group, Meegwun Fairbrother as Arctic Biosystems’ head of security Daniel Aerov, and Neil Napier as Farragut’s brother Dr. Peter Farragut, a scientist at Arctic Biosystems.
Syfy has previously released a teaser, which only hinted at the creepiness shown in the full-blown trailer.
The new thriller will join the network’s lineup on January 10th, once all the holiday madness has died down. Are you looking forward to some fresh science fiction goodness on TV? Could this be a sci-fi counter to ‘American Horror Story’?
