In 2012 we found out that director Rupert Wyatt (‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘,’The Gambler’) was set to direct a miniseries for HBO called ‘Echo Chamber’ which was based off of a true story . Now it appears to be a series with a sci-fi theme to it.
Initial word had the series being about a British soldier who infiltrates the Irish Republican Army in the 80s and as he rose to power, had to deal with survival while undercover. Now, that doesn’t actually seem to be the plan.
For starters, ‘Echo Chamber’ was initially set to be three separate 90 minute episodes. Now it has become a 10-episode series. On top of that, while it was originally meant to be more of a retelling of a what actually happened, it now seems to be falling into the category of science fiction.
Here is what Wyatt had to say about the show:
“I’ve been in pre-production on that for five years and it’s really because it’s a 10-part TV series, science fiction, that Daniel Hardy, my co-writer and I, we’ve been building gradually in between projects. So what I hope is, whether it be next year or the year after, we’ll go into it. But my intention is to shoot all 10 episodes and be across all of it, so it’s a huge undertaking, but it’s my passion project, yeah.”
“… You know what? It’s based on a true story of a British solider who goes undercover into the IRA, but we transferred it to a more science fiction context, so it follows the same trajectory of the character but it’s a different setting though.”
While it is falling into the realm of the genre we love, it will still be vaguely based upon the true story. In many instances we get science fiction used as social commentary about current events in the world, here we will be seeing real history being used to inspire science fiction. I like!
