At least from the look of things, DC Fandome will be a more interactive experience (I really don’t need to see another Zoom panel) and “attendees” will be able to explore various virtual areas and get teases from upcoming projects like the movies ‘Aquaman’ (the sequel or the movie that came out two years ago?), ‘The Batman’, ‘Black Adam’, ‘The Suicide Squad’, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, and HBO Max’s re-edit ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’; and the TV shows ‘Batwoman’, ‘Doom Patrol’, ‘Lucifer’, and ‘Pennyworth’. To promote DC Fandome, Warner Brothers has released a rousing trailer, set to John Williams’ ‘Superman: The Movie’ theme song.  Check it out below: These are the virtual areas that fans can explore (via Collider): DC WatchVerse: Here’s where you grab a seat, sit back, and join our virtual audience and become completely engrossed in hours of must-see content from around the world. DC Universe Stops Offering Annual Subscriptions… Meaning It Probably Won’t Last Another Year https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/21/dc-universe-stops-offering-annual-subscriptions-meaning-it-probably-wont-last-another-year/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/21/dc-universe-stops-offering-annual-subscriptions-meaning-it-probably-wont-last-another-year/#disqus_thread Tue, 21 Jul 2020 20:24:48 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354308 Okay, well… I’ve tried to be positive about this, buuuut… DC Universe has ceased offering annual memberships.  This can really only mean one thing– DC Universe won’t be around for another year. The writing has been on the wall for a while.  DC Universe’s original series are steadily being “shared” with other outlets with ‘Stargirl’ also airing on The CW, soon to be joined by ‘Swamp Thing’, while ‘Doom Patrol’ is also available on HBO Max, with ‘Harley Quinn’ joining it in a couple of weeks.  Word arrived weeks ago that ‘Stargirl’ was moving entirely to The CW and would no longer be offered on DC Universe.  The CW, DC Universe, and HBO Max are all owned by parent company WarnerMedia, and many have speculated that with the launch of the bigger, more expansive streaming platform, HBO Max, that DC Universe’s days were numbered.  They were right. DC Universe, which costs $7.99 a month, was said to be shifting its focus to digital comics and news.  But then it went and canceled ‘DC Daily’, its comic book news show that aired Monday through Friday. On June 30, DC Universe subscribers were offered the chance to add HBO Max for $4.99 […]

‘Justice League Dark: Apokolips War’ Will Be The Last Movie In This DC Animated Universe https://sciencefiction.com/2020/03/30/justice-league-dark-apokolips-war-will-be-the-last-movie-in-this-dc-animated-universe/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/03/30/justice-league-dark-apokolips-war-will-be-the-last-movie-in-this-dc-animated-universe/#disqus_thread Mon, 30 Mar 2020 14:39:45 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=352604 Well, as the headline reads, the upcoming animated film ‘Justice League Dark: Apokolips War’ will be the last set in this DC shared universe.  This cycle kicked off with ‘Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox’ in 2013, which was followed by ‘Justice League: War’, ‘Son of Batman’, ‘Justice League: Throne of Atlantis’, ‘Batman Vs. Robin’, ‘Batman: Bad Blood’, ‘Justice League vs. Teen Titans’, ‘Justice League Dark’, ‘Teen Titans: The Judas Contract’, ‘Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay’, ‘The Death of Superman’, ‘Reign of the Supermen’, ‘Batman: Hush’, and ‘Wonder Woman: Bloodlines’. Of course, there have been multiple DC animated movies released during this time that have not been connected to this shared universe, and Warner Bros. Animation will continue to create and release original DC animated flicks– they will just be free-standing.  There is also the possibility that they could establish a new shared universe with a different art style and direction. This sequence of movies was meant to reflect DC Comics’ “New 52” reboot, which launched in 2011.  Ironically, the film series has outlasted the publishing initiative, which began to unravel in 2015, with the “Convergence” crossover.  It should be noted, however, that the films themselves drifted away from some of the “New […]

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War features the largest Super Hero cast in the history of DC Universe Movies with dozens of actors/characters spotlighted in a grand ensemble of talent reprising their roles from this six-year story continuum. Matt Ryan (Legends of Tomorrow, Constantine), Jerry O’Connell (Carter, Bravo’s Play by Play, Stand by Me) and Taissa Farmiga (The Nun, The Mule, American Horror Story) anchor the cast as Constantine, Superman and Raven, respectively – the triumvirate determined to assemble the forces necessary to lead humanity’s final attack. Alongside that trio are the long-running core of Justice League voices — Jason O’Mara (The Man in the High Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Batman, Rosario Dawson (Briar Patch, Daredevil, Sin City) as Wonder Woman, Shemar Moore (S.W.A.T., Criminal Minds) as Cyborg and […]

To be entirely fair, they never actually went anywhere and have pretty consistently been awesome over the years, but it’s definitely a safe statement to say that this year they are truly returning to New York Toy Fair 2020 at the top of their game when it comes to comic book themed action figures. Without further ado, here’s the full rundown on the New York Toy Fair 2020 showcase for McFarlane Toys comic book and superhero-themed figures! Starting off with perhaps one of the most interesting news bites, Mcfarlane Toys are taking steps to bring back the brand that started it all with ‘Spawn‘! After the success of the ‘Spawn 300’ comic book last year, McFarlane is focusing on revitalizing the brand, but they need your help! McFarlane Toys is going to be launching a Kickstarter ‘direct-to-consumer’ crowdfunding campaign to remake the original 1995 Spawn figure with an updated scale, sculpt, and articulation that will bring this beloved figure design into modern times. While we are expecting more information to be coming soon, we were excited to learn that if this new Spawn figure remake does well, there will be more remakes […]

Animation marks six years of interwoven DC movies by delivering what sounds like the biggest yet.  Based on the New 52 relaunch, things kicked off with ‘Justice League: War’, which adapted the first storyline from that version of the ‘Justice League’ comic book, showing the formation of the team (and the origin of Cyborg) to stave off an invasion by Darkseid and his Parademons.  Now he’s bringing payback in the new movie ‘Justice League Dark: Apokolips War’ and part of the voice cast has been announced. Tony Todd (‘Candyman’) reprises the voice of Darkseid.  Todd previously voiced the despot in ‘Reign of the Supermen’.  (Steve Blum voiced him in ‘War’.) It appears the three heroes that will be the most heavily featured are Superman, John Constantine, and Raven.  Jerry O’Connell has voiced Superman in ‘Justice League: Throne of Atlantis’, ‘Justice League vs. Teen Titans’, ‘Justice League Dark’, ‘The Death of Superman’, ‘Reign of the Supermen’, and ‘Batman: Hush’, and he returns here.  (Alan Tudyk voiced him in ‘War’.) Matt Ryan, who portrays Constantine in live-action on ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, will once again voice the […]

But big changes occurred.  The first season was an hour-long, but that was one hour-long story.  And due to pressure from the group ACT (Action for Children’s Television), the show was devoid of any violence or excitement.  Episodes had an overall environmental slant, and most of the time, the antagonists weren’t evil, but misguided.  (It was a snooze.) Luckily, that scrutiny was relaxed by 1977 when ‘The All-New Super Friends Hour’ premiered.  In the new episodes, the heroes actually confronted real villains, motivated by greed and power.  They still weren’t allowed to physically strike them, but the episodes were still faster-paced and more exciting, and the focus was on the heroes themselves, not the sidekicks, as had been the case before. The main cast from the first series remained — Aquaman (voiced by Norman Alden), Batman (Olan Soule) & Robin (Casey Kasem), Superman (Danny Dark), and Wonder Woman (Shannon Farnon).  Gone […]

Wait, what?! On January 18 and 25, 1979, (consecutive Thursday nights) NBC aired two hour-long specials featuring the heroes and villains on the DC Universe.  Almost 40 years before the ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ stormed onto The CW, another team of DC champions blasted into living rooms under the name ‘Legends of the Superheroes’ with the first chapter subtitled ‘The Challenge’ and part two called ‘The Roast’.  The live-action specials were produced by legendary animation house Hanna Barbera, who were responsible for the hit Saturday morning cartoon ‘Super Friends’, which had been airing on ABC starting in 1973.  However, ‘Legends of the Superheroes’ was broadcast on NBC, which […]

Stop reading if you haven’t watched it yet! * * * * Well, ‘Arrow’ is over, and fans can finally move on from the show that started the ‘Arrowverse,’ albeit with one very notable exception, the fate of John Diggle. For years fans have been enamored of Oliver Queen’s one-time bodyguard and driver who turned into his best friend and partner in vigilantism, and became even more interested in Diggle once rumors started flying that he might be a future Green Lantern due to his similarities to the Lantern John Stewart (who a lot of fans outside of comics still remember from the beloved ‘Justice League’ and ‘Justice League Unlimited’ animated series in the early 2000s.) Now, after an ‘Arrow’ finale that included what could only be described as a potential Green Lantern origin story moment for Diggle (a scene that had a meteor crash near Dig while he is packing up for his move to Metropolis, and Dig finding a box with something glowing bright green inside), fans are very curious about what the ‘Arrowverse’ and DC Television has in store for Diggle in the future.   RELATED:  Review: The […]

But that doesn’t mean that all of the realities from the Multiverse were gone.  Instead, it appeared that an all-new Multiverse had formed: Earth-2, setting for the upcoming series ‘Stargirl’, which will be offered on both the DC Universe streaming service and The CW; Earth-9, home of ‘Titans’, which had been among the parallel universes destroyed at the beginning of “Crisis”; Earth-12, setting of the recently announced ‘Green Lantern’ series coming to HBO Max; Earth-19, setting of DC Universe’s defunct ‘Swamp Thing’; Earth-21, setting for DC Universe’s ‘Doom Patrol’— firmly establishing that even though this show was originally meant to be a spin-off of ‘Titans’, it now takes place in its own reality; and Earth-96, the “Kingdom Come” Earth, which is also believed to be the reality of the Christopher Reeve ‘Superman’ movies and Brandon Routh’s ‘Superman Returns’.   RELATED: Flash In The Pan: The […]

Even though HBO Max’s head of original programming, Sarah Aubrey says that the streaming service is only in the “early stages of talking to him about,” the fact that a preview was included on this episode of ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ would indicate that this show will arrive sooner rather than later.  HBO Max itself launches in the spring of this year. Aubrey revealed that this series “will span several decades and focus on the origin stories of two major Green Lanterns on Earth” as well one in space, “going into the Sinestro story.”   […]
