Jim Lee Confirms DC Universe Content Is Moving To HBO Max

Well, we all knew it was coming, but it appears to be official. DC Universe will continue to provide digital comics and a platform for fans to interact, but its original TV projects are moving over to HBO Max. HBO Max already offers the animated ‘Harley Quinn’ and live-action ‘Doom Patrol’, but according to Jim Lee, DC Comics’ sole publisher after the departure of Dan DiDio earlier this year, it sounds as though the remainder of DC Universe’s original continent will also shift over. That includes the live-action ‘Titans’ and animated ‘Young Justice’. Just weeks ago, DC Universe quietly stopped offering annual memberships. ‘Stargirl’, meanwhile, was moved over to The CW, where it has performed strongly. It was already announced that Season 2 would only be released via The CW and not DC Universe. The CW is also airing ‘Swamp Thing’ a live-action series that only lasted for one shortened season, and there have been faint rumbling that a second season could be in the cards if it performs well. Fans of DC Comics and its various media had to have been disappointed that none of them were presented at San Diego Comic-Con’s virtual con this year. Instead, the WarnerMedia DC empire is holding its own virtual con, DC Fandome, on August 22. This event will take place for 24 hours. Ray Fisher didn’t spend all of his time during Justice Con trashing Joss Whedon. Fisher has been a vocal advocate for ‘Justice League’s original director Zack Snyder, who previously helmed ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman V Superman’. ‘Man of Steel’ did okay, but ‘Batman V Superman’ was loudly decried for being a terrible movie that was too dark (among other flaws). But Fisher thinks this was what the ocean of superhero movies needs. “For me personally, I need something new. I need something that speaks to the way the world is today, not this idealized sort of yesteryear version of who these individuals are. The world is complicated. The heroes need to be just as complicated to help people deal with the circumstances that we’re facing every single day… If an alien with superpowers came down to Earth today do you think people would be like, ‘Yeah, come on let’s go!’? While most eyes were on SDCC’s first Con@Home, another virtual fan expo, Justice Con, took place simultaneously, with a focus on the upcoming Zack Snyder re-edit of ‘Justice League’. This was a fan-organized event, so it wasn’t packed with a lot of stars (look for more of them to participate in the official DC Fandome in August), but two cast members contributed– Ray Fisher who played Cyborg/Victor Stone, and Joe Porter, who played his father, Silas Stone. Fisher has made waves lately, due to accusations leveled against Joss Whedon, who took over directing after Snyder departed after the death of his daughter. Though there aren’t any details yet, a virtual table read of George Miller’s aborted ‘Justice League: Mortal’ will be held for charity. Along with ‘Superman Lives’/’Superman: Flyby’, ‘Batman Unchained’, and ‘Super Max’ (starring Green Arrow), this is one of those potentially great DC Comics movies that never got made, although its basic plot has been public knowledge for years now. In 2015, filmmaker Ryan Unicomb announced plans for a documentary that would delve deep into this unmade film, but it failed to materialize. Earlier this year, Unicomb announced that production on the doc would resume, under a new title, ‘Seven Friends: George Miller’s Justice League’. But until then, this table read may suffice if you’ve ever had any questions about this project. Okay, well… I’ve tried to be positive about this, buuuut… DC Universe has ceased offering annual memberships. This can really only mean one thing– DC Universe won’t be around for another year. The writing has been on the wall for a while. DC Universe’s original series are steadily being “shared” with other outlets with ‘Stargirl’ also airing on The CW, soon to be joined by ‘Swamp Thing’, while ‘Doom Patrol’ is also available on HBO Max, with ‘Harley Quinn’ joining it in a couple of weeks. Word arrived weeks ago that ‘Stargirl’ was moving entirely to The CW and would no longer be offered on DC Universe. The CW, DC Universe, and HBO Max are all owned by parent company WarnerMedia, and many have speculated that with the launch of the bigger, more expansive streaming platform, HBO Max, that DC Universe’s days were numbered. ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ stunt coordinator Jeff Pruitt has come forward to call series creator Joss Whedon an “egomaniac,” while his wife, stunt performer Sophia Crawford followed up with a more in-depth recollection of an instance when Whedon demanded she dump Pruit, who was then her boyfriend, if she wanted to continue working on ‘Buffy’. As Pruitt told Metro UK: “We had a great relationship, Joss and I, but he changed as the show took off… By season four I’d become fed up and told them I was going to leave to direct Second Unit on another series. Ray Fisher has been on quite a tirade on Twitter attacking Joss Whedon, the second director to work on Fisher’s first major motion picture, ‘Justice League’. But he has also used his social platform to shut down any rumors that he has any animosity directed at Joivan Wade. Both actors play the same role– DC’s half-man, half-computer crimefighter, Cyborg, a.k.a. Victor Stone. Fisher appeared in the role first, making a cameo in ‘Batman V Superman’ before appearing in a significant role in ‘Justice League’ in 2017. Well, here’s an update most people probably never thought they’d see! Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to return as Batman in ‘The Flash’ movie, which is in development. But wait! There’s more! According to sources (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter), Keaton is actually eyed to appear in multiple films, in a role compared to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as a “mentor” or possibly even as a “string-puller” to a younger generation of heroes. THR cited the long-in-development ‘Batgirl’ movie as one potential picture that could feature Keaton’s Dark Knight in this mentor capacity. This is somewhat similar to a recent RUMOR regarding Henry Cavill‘s ongoing involvement with the DC movies. Reportedly, plans were for him to take on a “Hulk-like” role as a supporting character in upcoming movies as opposed to starring in his own solo pictures.
