Jim Lee Confirms DC Universe Content Is Moving To HBO Max

Well, we all knew it was coming, but it appears to be official. DC Universe will continue to provide digital comics and a platform for fans to interact, but its original TV projects are moving over to HBO Max. HBO Max already offers the animated ‘Harley Quinn’ and live-action ‘Doom Patrol’, but according to Jim Lee, DC Comics’ sole publisher after the departure of Dan DiDio earlier this year, it sounds as though the remainder of DC Universe’s original continent will also shift over. That includes the live-action ‘Titans’ and animated ‘Young Justice’. Just weeks ago, DC Universe quietly stopped offering annual memberships. ‘Stargirl’, meanwhile, was moved over to The CW, where it has performed strongly. It was already announced that Season 2 would only be released via The CW and not DC Universe. The CW is also airing ‘Swamp Thing’ a live-action series that only lasted for one shortened season, and there have been faint rumbling that a second season could be in the cards if it performs well. Fans of DC Comics and its various media had to have been disappointed that none of them were presented at San Diego Comic-Con’s virtual con this year. Instead, the WarnerMedia DC empire is holding its own virtual con, DC Fandome, on August 22. This event will take place for 24 hours. At least from the look of things, DC Fandome will be a more interactive experience (I really don’t need to see another Zoom panel) and “attendees” will be able to explore various virtual areas and get teases from upcoming projects like the movies ‘Aquaman’ (the sequel or the movie that came out two years ago?), ‘The Batman’, ‘Black Adam’, ‘The Suicide Squad’, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, and HBO Max’s re-edit ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’; and the TV shows ‘Batwoman’, ‘Doom Patrol’, ‘Lucifer’, and ‘Pennyworth’. It’s hard to believe that the finale of ‘Stargirl’ Season 1 is just around the corner! The shared series between DC Universe and The CW has proven to be a hit on both outlets, but moving forward, Season 2 will air only on The CW, as it seems that DC Universe is shifting over to a service strictly devoted to digital comics. Brec Bassinger heads up the cast as an optimistic teenager who inherits the mantle of Stargirl from the deceased hero Starman, a member of the Justice Society of America, until his and all of their untimely deaths at the hands of the Injustice Society of America. Mentored by her stepfather, Starman’s sidekick Stripesy, a.k.a. Okay, well… I’ve tried to be positive about this, buuuut… DC Universe has ceased offering annual memberships. This can really only mean one thing– DC Universe won’t be around for another year. The writing has been on the wall for a while. DC Universe’s original series are steadily being “shared” with other outlets with ‘Stargirl’ also airing on The CW, soon to be joined by ‘Swamp Thing’, while ‘Doom Patrol’ is also available on HBO Max, with ‘Harley Quinn’ joining it in a couple of weeks. Word arrived weeks ago that ‘Stargirl’ was moving entirely to The CW and would no longer be offered on DC Universe. The CW, DC Universe, and HBO Max are all owned by parent company WarnerMedia, and many have speculated that with the launch of the bigger, more expansive streaming platform, HBO Max, that DC Universe’s days were numbered. They were right. DC Universe, which costs $7.99 a month, was said to be shifting its focus to digital comics and news. It was just announced at the beginning of July that ‘Harley Quinn’ was following in the footsteps of ‘Doom Patrol’, and would now be shared between original streaming platform DC Universe, and new service HBO Max. Both are owned by WarnerMedia. Now, if you subscribe to HBO Max and not DCU and have been wondering when ‘Harley Quinn’ would bring her animated chaos to your screen, the wait is almost over. HBO Max has announced that the first two seasons of ‘Harley Quinn’ will arrive on August 1. Both seasons will be released in their entirety. ‘Harley Quinn’ has rather shockingly become DCU’s most buzzed-about show and its appeal has been bolstered TBS airing the first episode, and Syfy running the entire first season. ‘Doom Patrol’ S2 Will Be One Episode Short Due To COVID-19

Fans of ‘Doom Patrol’— both those that watched S1 on DC Universe and those newly exposed to the series on HBO Max– are in for a bit of disappointment. COVID-19 shutdowns resulted in S2 being cut short an episode. What’s worse, it sounds as though the episode is nearly finished, but with it being unlikely that production will begin anytime soon, the new batch will consist of only nine episodes. Abigail Shapiro, who has just joined the cast as The Chief’s daughter Dorothy Spinner, told Insider: “It was basically all finished. There was going to be one more episode and we only had a couple of scenes left, but we never got to finish that episode. So, I don’t know if that episode is ever going to air or anything. I don’t know much about what’s happening. We have [episodes] one through nine, which is basically the whole season. We got basically everything done, which I’m very grateful for.” Normally, fans could expect the unfinished episode later, possibly as the premiere episode of Season 3. SPOILER ALERT: There is a SPOILER from the latest episode of ‘Stargirl’, “Brainwave” below, so if you are not caught up, proceed with caution or turn back now. ‘Stargirl’ was created to be exclusive to DC Universe. There was even a tease at the end of The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover which seemed to establish that this show, along with other DCU offerings ‘Titans’, ‘Doom Patrol’, and ‘Swamp Thing’ were parallel universes that the heroes of The CW would never encounter, because they were no longer able to detect the existence of any parallel realities. But a funny thing happened after that. The decision was made that ‘Stargirl’ would be shared between DCU and The CW. Episodes debut on DCU on Mondays, and then air on The CW the next day. Giancarlo Esposito may not be a household name, but everyone’s seen him, bringing his amazing gravitas to projects like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’, ‘Revolution’, ‘Once Upon A Time’, the ‘Maze Runner’ movies, and so many more. Ray Fisher has been on quite a tirade on Twitter attacking Joss Whedon, the second director to work on Fisher’s first major motion picture, ‘Justice League’. But he has also used his social platform to shut down any rumors that he has any animosity directed at Joivan Wade. Both actors play the same role– DC’s half-man, half-computer crimefighter, Cyborg, a.k.a. Victor Stone. Fisher appeared in the role first, making a cameo in ‘Batman V Superman’ before appearing in a significant role in ‘Justice League’ in 2017. Wade made his debut last year on DC Universe’s TV series ‘Doom Patrol’, which just launched its second season on DC Universe and HBO Max. ‘Stargirl’ will continue to soar, as a second season has been ordered. But there is a huge change in the way the show will be made available. It will now ONLY be shown on The CW and its related platforms, including The CW app and website. It will no longer be carried by DC Universe, the little streaming service that couldn’t. ‘Stargirl’ was developed for DC Universe, a WarnerMedia-owned streaming service that debuted in 2018. ‘Harley Quinn’ Is The Latest Show To Be Shared Between DC Universe And HBO Max

‘Doom Patrol’ started off as a DC Universe exclusive, but is now also available on the HBO Max streaming service, and now, ‘Harley Quinn’ is following in its footsteps. The first two seasons of ‘Harley Quinn’, consisting of 13 episodes each, will be released on HBO Max later this summer. ‘Harley Quinn’ Season 1 debuted last November, and Season 2 arrived this past April. This violent and explicit animated series has proven to a breakout hit and has received excellent reviews. Fan reaction has also been overwhelmingly positive. In December, TBS aired the show’s premiere episode, and this past May, Syfy aired the first season, so Warner Brothers has been really pushing this series in hopes of scoring a wider audience.
