Here is what Lee said (via The Hollywood Reporter): “The original content that is on DCU is migrating to HBO Max. Truthfully, that’s the best platform for that content. The […]

At least from the look of things, DC Fandome will be a more interactive experience (I really don’t need to see another Zoom panel) and “attendees” will be able to explore various virtual areas and get teases from upcoming projects like the movies ‘Aquaman’ (the sequel or the movie that came out two years ago?), ‘The Batman’, ‘Black Adam’, ‘The Suicide Squad’, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, and HBO Max’s re-edit ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’; and the TV shows ‘Batwoman’, ‘Doom Patrol’, ‘Lucifer’, and ‘Pennyworth’. To promote DC Fandome, Warner Brothers has released a rousing trailer, set to John Williams’ ‘Superman: The Movie’ theme song.  Check it out below: These are the virtual areas that fans can explore (via Collider): DC WatchVerse: Here’s where you grab a seat, sit back, and join our virtual audience and become completely engrossed in hours of must-see content from around the world. Brec Bassinger heads up the cast as an optimistic teenager who inherits the mantle of Stargirl from the deceased hero Starman, a member of the Justice Society of America, until his and all of their untimely deaths at the hands of the Injustice Society of America.  Mentored by her stepfather, Starman’s sidekick Stripesy, a.k.a. Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), Courtney has assembled a new JSA with Rick Tyler (Cameron Gellman), the son of original JSA member, Hourman, and two more friends.  Yolanda Montez (Yvette Monreal) has taken on the identity of Wildcat, while brainy Beth Caple (Anjelika Washington) has become the new Dr. Mid-Nite. In the season finale, “Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.’, the new JSA, aided by Sir Justin, the Shining Knight (Mark Ashworth), will face off against the ISA for one final (?) showdown. DC Universe Stops Offering Annual Subscriptions… Meaning It Probably Won’t Last Another Year https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/21/dc-universe-stops-offering-annual-subscriptions-meaning-it-probably-wont-last-another-year/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/21/dc-universe-stops-offering-annual-subscriptions-meaning-it-probably-wont-last-another-year/#disqus_thread Tue, 21 Jul 2020 20:24:48 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354308 Okay, well… I’ve tried to be positive about this, buuuut… DC Universe has ceased offering annual memberships.  This can really only mean one thing– DC Universe won’t be around for another year. The writing has been on the wall for a while.  DC Universe’s original series are steadily being “shared” with other outlets with ‘Stargirl’ also airing on The CW, soon to be joined by ‘Swamp Thing’, while ‘Doom Patrol’ is also available on HBO Max, with ‘Harley Quinn’ joining it in a couple of weeks.  Word arrived weeks ago that ‘Stargirl’ was moving entirely to The CW and would no longer be offered on DC Universe.  The CW, DC Universe, and HBO Max are all owned by parent company WarnerMedia, and many have speculated that with the launch of the bigger, more expansive streaming platform, HBO Max, that DC Universe’s days were numbered.  They were right. DC Universe, which costs $7.99 a month, was said to be shifting its focus to digital comics and news.  But then it went and canceled ‘DC Daily’, its comic book news show that aired Monday through Friday. On June 30, DC Universe subscribers were offered the chance to add HBO Max for $4.99 […]

Here’s When HBO Max Subscribers Can Binge ‘Harley Quinn’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/21/heres-when-hbo-max-subscribers-can-binge-harley-quinn/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/21/heres-when-hbo-max-subscribers-can-binge-harley-quinn/#disqus_thread Tue, 21 Jul 2020 12:30:09 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354292 It was just announced at the beginning of July that ‘Harley Quinn’ was following in the footsteps of ‘Doom Patrol’, and would now be shared between original streaming platform DC Universe, and new service HBO Max.  Both are owned by WarnerMedia.  Now, if you subscribe to HBO Max and not DCU and have been wondering when ‘Harley Quinn’ would bring her animated chaos to your screen, the wait is almost over.  HBO Max has announced that the first two seasons of ‘Harley Quinn’ will arrive on August 1.  Both seasons will be released in their entirety. ‘Harley Quinn’ has rather shockingly become DCU’s most buzzed-about show and its appeal has been bolstered TBS airing the first episode, and Syfy running the entire first season.  It’s also available on DVD.  (Usually displayed in the kids section of big box stores’ media departments.  This show is ABSOLUTELY not for kids!) Not surprisingly, ‘Harley Quinn’ has been renewed for a third batch.  Fans were startled and delighted that, like in the comics, Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) wound up as a romantic couple on the show.  Showrunner Justin Halpern promises that viewers can look forward to further exploration of this dynamic […]

‘Stargirl’s Neil Jackson Teases Potential Spin-Offs And More (SPOILERS) In Season 2 https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/15/stargirls-neil-jackson-teases-potential-spin-offs-and-teases-more-spoilers-in-season-2/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/15/stargirls-neil-jackson-teases-potential-spin-offs-and-teases-more-spoilers-in-season-2/#disqus_thread Wed, 15 Jul 2020 15:00:50 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354146 SPOILER ALERT: This article contains SPOILERS for Season TWO… Yes, TWO… of ‘Stargirl’, so if you don’t want to know any more, turn back now. There are still four more episodes of ‘Stargirl’ Season 1, but this story is just getting started.  In fact, Neil Jackson, who portrays the show’s Big Bad, Jordan Mahkent/Icicle, believes that some of the characters featured on the show could potentially spin-off into their own shows.  He also let slip a little tidbit about a figure that has only appeared for fleeting moments up ’til now.  A certain undead muscle monster will get a LOT more screen time coming up. As Jackson told Collider: “But there’s also huge potential for spin-offs from Stargirl. Within the Justice Society, there are all of these incredible heroes that dance all the way through the DC Universe. It’s the same with the Injustice Society. When Geoff was first pitching the show to me and he told me that Solomon Grundy was going to be part of the show, I did a little jump for joy because Solomon Grundy is just an amazing character. He’s this Hulk-like zombie that is so fun in our show. He really comes into his own, […]

‘Doom Patrol’ S2 Will Be One Episode Short Due To COVID-19 https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/15/doom-patrol-s2-will-be-one-episode-short-due-to-covid-19/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/15/doom-patrol-s2-will-be-one-episode-short-due-to-covid-19/#disqus_thread Wed, 15 Jul 2020 12:00:46 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354133 Fans of ‘Doom Patrol’— both those that watched S1 on DC Universe and those newly exposed to the series on HBO Max– are in for a bit of disappointment.  COVID-19 shutdowns resulted in S2 being cut short an episode.  What’s worse, it sounds as though the episode is nearly finished, but with it being unlikely that production will begin anytime soon, the new batch will consist of only nine episodes. Abigail Shapiro, who has just joined the cast as The Chief’s daughter Dorothy Spinner, told Insider: “It was basically all finished.  There was going to be one more episode and we only had a couple of scenes left, but we never got to finish that episode.  So, I don’t know if that episode is ever going to air or anything.  I don’t know much about what’s happening.  We have [episodes] one through nine, which is basically the whole season.  We got basically everything done, which I’m very grateful for.” Normally, fans could expect the unfinished episode later, possibly as the premiere episode of Season 3.  But Shapiro points out that neither DC Universe nor HBO Max has ordered another set of episodes. “I hope we get another season of ‘Doom […]

Will ‘Stargirl’ Be Integrated Into The Arrowverse? Neil Jackson (Icicle) Doesn’t Think So https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/14/will-stargirl-be-integrated-into-the-arrowverse-neil-jackson-icicle-doesnt-think-so/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/14/will-stargirl-be-integrated-into-the-arrowverse-neil-jackson-icicle-doesnt-think-so/#disqus_thread Tue, 14 Jul 2020 18:26:10 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354104 SPOILER ALERT: There is a SPOILER from the latest episode of ‘Stargirl’, “Brainwave” below, so if you are not caught up, proceed with caution or turn back now. ‘Stargirl’ was created to be exclusive to DC Universe.  There was even a tease at the end of The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover which seemed to establish that this show, along with other DCU offerings ‘Titans’, ‘Doom Patrol’, and ‘Swamp Thing’ were parallel universes that the heroes of The CW would never encounter, because they were no longer able to detect the existence of any parallel realities. But a funny thing happened after that.  The decision was made that ‘Stargirl’ would be shared between DCU and The CW.  Episodes debut on DCU on Mondays, and then air on The CW the next day.  It is also offered to stream for free on The CW app and CWTV.com, meaning that fans don’t have to subscribe to DCU to access this series. Though what’s going on with DCU is pure speculation at this point, it was announced that, beginning with Season 2, ‘Stargirl’ will ONLY be available on The CW and its related online platforms.  It won’t be on DCU at all! As he expressed to Entertainment Tonight:  “Well, there’s been all these rumors about being with Marvel, I want to work with those guys.  I put it out there all the time. I haven’t created any of those rumors, but I worked years ago with Louis D’Esposito, who’s one of the guys at Marvel, back when he was doing Cotton Club and I was doing Cotton Club, he was the First A.D. What they do is fantastic, and I want to do something enduring with them… I think the Marvel world would be, likely, the next step for me.” Esposito would be a major “get” for the MCU, as he brings a weight to his roles that few actors can […]

Victor Stone.  Fisher appeared in the role first, making a cameo in ‘Batman V Superman’ before appearing in a significant role in ‘Justice League’ in 2017.  Wade made his debut last year on DC Universe’s TV series ‘Doom Patrol’, which just launched its second season on DC Universe and HBO Max. While it might seem natural to pit two actors playing the same role against one another, Fisher shut that right down. Keep doin’ your thing, @JoivanWade! This move followed the announcement that ‘Doom Patrol’ would similarly be shared between DC Universe and HBO Max, also owned by WarnerMedia.  Just days ago, it was revealed that the adult animated series ‘Harley Quinn’ is also going to be shared with HBO Max beginning this summer. In May, it was announced that The CW would air DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’, a show that the service […]

In December, TBS aired the show’s premiere episode, and this past May, Syfy aired the first season, so Warner Brothers has been really pushing this series in hopes of scoring a wider audience.  The first season is also available on DVD, and for digital purchase through Amazon Prime Video. The series follows Harley Quinn after a final breakup with The Joker, as she attempts to establish herself as a crime boss and join the Legion of Doom.  Season 2 saw Gotham City cut off from the United States and ruled by the Injustice League.  Harley actually teams with the Justice League to defeat them, and along the way, to the delight of […]

Season 1 had successfully introduced viewers to this dysfunctional family of reluctant crime fighters, all of whom had tragic backstories and physical deformities that made them different from the usual pin-up-ready do-gooders, which made their bond even deeper.  Season 2 adds a new family member… literally, as The Chief’s daughter, Dorothy Spinner has arrived. Looking like a neanderthal, Dorothy has the ability to bring her imaginary friends to life.  20-year-old Abigail Shapiro portrays Dorothy, but her character is only 11 in the world of the ‘Doom Patrol’, and she has no desire to grow up. Shapiro spoke to CBR and said: “You’re definitely seeing Dorothy grow up a little bit because […]
